Classy mania

Really do have a big soft spot for 'Tiny Toon Adventures'. Don't love it as much 'Animaniacs' and 'Pinky and the Brain', but love the concept, characters and writing and have always considered it almost in their class. Like those shows, it gets better and better with each re-watch and it has something for both kids and adults. Mostly young and older adults though, with more familiarity with what is being referenced and the humour being even funnier, though the characters and jokes will be loved by kids.

The later 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes are a bit uneven in quality. There are some brilliant episodes but also a small handful of disappointing ones while never being terrible (none of the show's episodes fit that distinction). "New Class Day", made up of three segments ("The Just-Us League of Supertoons", "Sound Off" and "A Night in Kokomo"), was always one of my favourite episodes. Especially for "The Just-Us League of Supertoons". As a young adult, it is still up there with the best episodes, a standout of the later episodes and a very strong contender for the best of Season 3. Outstanding in every way and how to do a segment-structured episode, one of the few 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes where all the segments are equally wonderful in their own way.

Animation is terrific in all three segments. While "The Just-Us League of Supertoons" boasts some wildly imaginative visuals and wonderfully wild facial expressions and reactions, the most interesting segment visually was "Sound Off", made in very authentic and nostalgic black and white reminiscent of late-20s-early-30s black and white cartoons. The music is dynamic and full of character, complete with one of the catchiest theme songs of the 90s.

Writing is also superb and full of wit and laughs. The most cleverly written is "A Night in Kokomo", hilariously and affectionately paying homage to and parodying the Marx Brothers with numerous references to their films (i.e. Buster's "you can't afford it" line being directly from 'Animal Crackers') and many of the jokes being classic Marx Brothers material. The decision to keep "Sound Off" wordless was a good decision and made me nostalgic for older animation when it was in relative infancy.

The storytelling in all three segments is full of energy and charm, faring best of all in "The Just-Us League of Supertoons" (which actually would have been every bit as good as a full length episode). All three segments are full of the customary 'Tiny Toon Adventures' wackiness and worthy of classic Looney Tunes and it is this segment that comes closest to that.

Loved the character writing, the alter egos in "The Just-Us League of Supertoons" are enormous fun and worthy of a spin-off of their own. Buster and Babs were hilarious in their imitations of the Marx Brothers, especially Babs with Groucho. The voice acting is typically accomplished.

In conclusion, brilliant and one of my personal favourites of the show. 10/10.
