If you like this type of movie - the action/horror hybrid - Rise (Blood Hunter) is well worth a look. But if you also happen to appreciate the slightly skewed Sebastian Gutierrez perspective - from such films as Women in Trouble, or Snakes on a Plane - Rise becomes a must-see.
Yes, the story is largely predictable. This is a formula film. But Gutierrez brings his own syncopated style to the formula. All the beats are there, but they're just a little off the usual rhythm. The characters are just a bit different than you expect, just a bit more human. And the story unwinds in just a slightly different way than you'd expect - even though it does reach a familiar destination.
Along the way, there are some really nice performances. Lucy Liu, whom I've NEVER previously liked, is amazingly subdued and sympathetic. Carla Gugino is excellent as usual, and almost unrecognizable as a cynical vampire. And Michael Chiklis is particularly likable as the tough-guy cop. (You may have seen him before as the Thing, one of the few bright elements in the two mediocre Fantastic Four movies.)
Rise is a film that's scary, gory, energetic, yet also somehow intellectual on some existential level. Not everyone will get that, but Gutierrez fans will. This is very much a 'vampire noir' - a film that elevates a familiar dark formula with its own uniquely mythic style.
