The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series

Two new movies open today: Sherlock Holmes (in wide release) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (in Los Angeles and New York), the film Heath Ledger was working on when he died.
Let’s look at each in turn:
Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson
Sherlock Holmes
Let’s get one thing clear from the start: there is nothing gay about the new movie adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.
Earlier this year, star Robert Downey Jr. made headlines when he was quoted as saying the movie was about "two men who happen to be roommates, wrestle a lot and share a bed. It's bad-ass."
Cue the predictable conservative outrage from film critic Michael Medved and the idiots on talk radio.
But now that the movie is opening, other critics are chiming in on that meme, seeing some sort of gay subtext between Holmes (Downey Jr.

Reese Witherspoon plans to spend time skiing with friends and her children this Christmas after her Thanksgiving breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal, according to a source. Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal joined the star-studded crowd who braved the New York City blizzard recently to pop into the Thompson Smyth Tribeca hotel, where Justin Theroux, Mark Ronson and Scott Campbell hosted a holiday party benefiting God's Love We Deliver. Joining the Brokeback Mountain star were Mary-Louise Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Will Arnett and Josh Hartnett. 'Jake hung out with the guys all night,' a source said. 'He seemed in good spirits. He and Matt Dillon chatted for a good portion of the night and were laughing at each other's stories.'

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence

A pretty good year.
George Clooney in .Up in the Air.
Photo: Dale Robinette/ Paramount
It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.
Best Picture:
"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.
Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner,

Screen Queens: Best of the Gay Aughts

MattCanada here with a bit of an overview and Best-Of Gay films for the last decade.
Gay cinema over the last ten years has been intrinsically tied to both the political gains made by gay activists and the intense battles surrounding everything from the worldwide fight for gay marriage to nationally specific issues like America's Dadt and Doma, and Britain's repeal of Section 28. The relationship between the political and the cinematic is always most pronounced in the medium's relationship to minority groups and their texts.
The Aughts have seen gay-rights become the most visible"social values" issue in America, and this has been reflected in a number of high profile American films dealing frankly, sexually, and politically with what it means to be gay in America. Milk, Far From Heaven, and Mysterious Skin employ gay filmmaking traditions, like those of Affirmation Documentaries (Richard Dyer's term), Sirkian melodrama, and New Queer Cinema,

The Decade’s Film: 2005-2009

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.
They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman

What?! It’s not enough that we spent the whole year
providing you with insightful news and analysis on gay and bisexual
entertainment – now we have to pick which 2009 projects we think best
represented gay and bisexual men?!
Sorry, we’re getting a little Grinch-y around here come
year-end.
But the fact is, gay and bisexual entertainment-related news
is inexorably linked with the issue of visibility. If you know anything at all
about the history of such entertainment, you know that it’s almost always been
“controversial.” As passionate as the creators of these projects have always been,
there’s been a similarly strong counter-pressure to keep these themes hidden or
under wraps.
As a result, for a website like ours, covering the “news” of
these projects inevitably becomes a question of championing the ones of quality
(and giving the hook to those who don’t measure up, or that

Members of the New York Film Critics Circle are responding on the record to news that Mo'Nique will not attend their awards ceremony on Jan. 11 to accept her supporting-actress prize for "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." On Friday, one prominent member, speaking anonymously to Gold Derby, said her snub lends "credence to the story that she wants to be paid to show up for these things."
Thelma Adams (Us Weekly), two-time past Nyfcc chairwoman, tells Gold Derby: "As a Nyfcc member, my response is more snacks and drinks for us, and more available seats for more congenial people. My guess is that Meryl will attend."
Lou Lumenick of the New York Post makes a sly reference to recent news that Oprah Winfrey will not be among the three producers to receive an Oscar statuette if "Precious" wins best picture. She's accused of being just an "air quote

I chose my previous two film scores based on both their distinctiveness in both context and content, but also because they had certain weaknesses that, while important to their character, still kept them from being the kind of landmark works that are universally acknowledged as ground-breaking and important. The three scores I’m highlighting this week were chosen specifically for both their widespread popularity and critical success.
Let’s begin with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This is a score that many, many people who are even remotely familiar with the film are aware of in terms of importance. Like the other films I’m focusing on here, the music of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon goes hand in hand with the other elements of the movie, but it could be said that, out of the three, this score is the most potent accompaniment. This is mostly because of the movie’s setting; feudal China.
