Renegade Animation has partnered with writer-director Robert Zappia to produce a flash animated holiday-themed feature film, Who Stole Santa's Sack? Santa's Sack voice talent includes Kathy Bates, Ed Asner, Shirley Jones, Andy Griffith, Norm MacDonald, Brad Garrett, Colin Ford and Daniel Roebuck. Jay Leno will narrate. Newcomer Madison Davenport will give voice to Sophiana, the story's central character. The story centers on little Sophiana who helps Santa recover his magical sack of toys just in time to save Christmas. Zappia will direct from his original script based on a childhood story told by his father. Zappia wrote for the television series Home Improvement and was the writer and executive producer of the Sci Fi Network original miniseries 5ive Days to Midnight starring Timothy Hutton and Randy Quaid. He was also the writer of the feature Halloween: H20, starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

The miniseries magic at Sci Fi Channel has disappeared for its latest longform effort, 5ive Days to Midnight. The heavily promoted five-hour thriller averaged a comparatively meager 1.69 million total viewers in its premiere window at 9 p.m. over four consecutive nights last week beginning June 7. The average viewership was less than half that of Sci Fi's previous big-budget miniseries, including Battlestar Galactica and Steven Spielberg Presents Taken. "I would be lying if I said we weren't disappointed and really surprised," said Bonnie Hammer, president of Sci Fi and USA Network. "But we've been so fortunate that at some point something had to be lower than expectations."...

Lions Gate Entertainment has signed a new multiyear contract with Kevin Beggs, president of programming and production at the company's television division. Beggs will continue to oversee a wide range of projects at broadcast and cable networks, including current hits like the USA series The Dead Zone and upcoming fare like the summer Sci Fi Channel miniseries 5 Days to Midnight. "Kevin is one of the industry's rising superstars," said Lions Gate Entertainment CEO Jon Feltheimer, to whom Beggs reports. Anne Hathaway and Randy Quaid are joining Ang Lee's cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain for Focus Features. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are starring, while James Schamus, Michael Costigan, Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry are producing. Adapted by McMurtry and Ossana from a short story by The Shipping News author E. Annie Proulx, the story centers on two men (Ledger and Gyllenhaal) who meet one summer as sheepherders in Wyoming and form a bond and love that spans 20 years. Hathaway plays the strong-willed ex-rodeo queen wife of Gyllenhaal's character, while Quaid will play the hard-bitten foreman who employs the two cowboys. Michelle Williams has already been cast as the wife of Ledger's character. Hathaway gained attention for starring in The Princess Diaries. She next stars in Ella Enchanted, followed by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Hathaway is repped by WMA and Management 360. Brokeback brings veteran actor Quaid full circle as his first credited film role was in 1971's The Last Picture Show, which was co-written by McMurtry. Quaid is shooting Sci Fi Channel's 5 Days to Midnight. He is repped by Paradigm.

Randy Quaid has been tapped to star opposite Timothy Hutton in the upcoming Sci Fi Channel miniseries Five Days to Midnight. The five-hour mini centers on a college professor (Hutton) who learns that he is about to be murdered and has five days to figure out who is trying to kill him. Quaid will play homicide detective Irwin Sikorski, who is enlisted by Hutton to aid his frantic search after he learns that Sikorski will be assigned to investigate his homicide in the not-so-distant future. Quaid joins the cast of Five Days to Midnight after most recently starring in the drama series The Brotherhood of Poland, N.H., which had a short run on CBS this fall. His recent features include the drama Milwaukee, Minnesota and the romantic comedy Carolina. Quaid, an Oscar nominee for 1973's The Last Detail, is repped by Paradigm and attorney Darren Trattnor.

Timothy Hutton and Nicole de Boer have been tapped to star in the upcoming Sci Fi Channel miniseries 5 Days to Midnight. The veteran actor will star in the five-hour project from Lions Gate Television as a professor who receives a briefcase detailing plans for his own murder; de Boer (USA Network's The Dead Zone) will play his sister. Midnight will be directed by Jim Watkins.
