In key appointments at Constantin Film, one of Europe’s biggest – and most ambitious – of production powerhouses, Viola Jäger and Jan Ehlert has been named as its new Chief Content Officers.
Jan Ehlert will head up TV/streaming, Viola Jäger oversee content for theatrical/film; both report to Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben.
For years, Constantin has built its business on big international hits, such as the “Resident Evil” franchise, and a rock-solid domestic business powered by national blockbusters, such as, most recently, “Chantal and the Magic Kingdom,” which has sold over 2.6 million admissions in Germany.
Coming just a couple of months after Berben took over formally from Martin Moszkowicz as Constantin Film CEO, the new appointments are a play for continuity. Ehlert joined Moovie in 2000, just a year after Constantin head Berndt Eichinger had bought the Berben-headed company. Focusing on TV in his now 24-year career at Constantin Film,...

After more than 15 years of development hell, the reimagining of “The Crow” will finally hit theaters this summer.
“The Crow” is based on the indie comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr that was originally published back in 1989 by Caliber Press. 30 years ago in 1994, a film adaptation of the comic book by visionary director Alex Proyas was released into theaters, perhaps better known as the movie where star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set during the middle of production.
Miramax stepped in and spent $8 million to pick up where production left off and finish the film. “The Crow” went on to gross $93.7 million at the box office against its $23 million budget, and the film eventually became a cult classic. Three lackluster sequels and a television adaptation would follow, however the property had always been earmarked for what current distributor Lionsgate is calling a reimagining.

After years of stops and starts, The Crow reboot is finally flying and now has the first trailer to prove it.
Bill Skarsgard leads the film, which centers on a man who is murdered, alongside his fiancée but is granted supernatural powers to seek revenge.
The Crow began life as a comic book, with James O’Barr debuting the character in 1989. It grew to new levels of popularity with the cult hit film, which starred the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an on-set accident during filming. Multiple sequels followed, including The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005).
But the current reboot took nearly 20 years to get off the ground, with multiple stars and filmmakers coming and going. Blade Stephen Norrington took a stab at one point, while F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and star Luke Evans tried to break the curse at another point.

In his director’s statement for The Wait (La espera), F. Javier Gutiérrez describes his latest feature as a “slow-burn supernatural neo-western set in Spain in the 1970s.” That’s certainly an apt summary, but one that also underscores the movie’s main problem: It’s trying to be too many things at once, and by doing so amounts to less than the sum of its parts.
The Spanish filmmaker’s debut from 2008, Before the Fall, tried to combine a disaster flick with a home-invasion flick, yielding similarly sketchy results. In both cases, Gutiérrez showcases a keen sense of style but an inability, despite all the genre-jumping, to make something that feels truly original. World premiering at Oldenburg, with additional dates set for Sitges and Fantastic Fest, the film could provide decent streaming fodder for fans of international thrillers while finding a small theatrical audience at home in Spain.

For three decades, the Oldenburg Film Festival has been devoted to celebrating independent cinema outside the mainstream of both Hollywood and the international art-house market.
For its 30th edition, which runs through Sunday, festival founder and artistic director Torsten Neumann continues to highlight weird, extreme and cutting-edge indie movies from around the world.
Here are five can’t-miss movies from the 2023 crop.
The Wait The Wait
After the success of his debut film Before the Fall (2008), Spanish director Javier Gutiérrez followed Hollywood’s call and directed Rings (2017), the third entry in The Ring horror franchise. Despite grossing $83 million at the box office, the film was considered a flop, and Gutiérrez returned to Spain, spending six years developing his third feature, which will have its world premiere in Oldenburg. The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading all-indie fest, unveiled highlights for its 30th-anniversary edition, including several world premieres featuring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and Mission : Impossible star Ving Rhames.
Uppercut, a boxing film featuring Mission: Impossible star Ving Rhames, will close the festival on September 17. Director Torsten Ruether remade his own, German-language, debut Leberhaken, which premiered in Oldenburg in 2021. The Million Dollar Baby-style story sees Rhames as a disillusioned former boxer who gets a shot at redemption when a young woman shows up at his gym, begging him to train her.
Spanish genre director F. Javier Gutierrez will bring his latest horror tale, The Wait, to Oldenburg this year. Gutiérrez’s 2008 debut Before the Fall, an end-of-the-world sci-fi thriller, was a cross-over hit, and his follow-up was the big-budget Rings (2017) for Paramount, the third entry in the Japanese-inspired horror saga. During cross-country red-eye flights, while her passengers slept, T.J. Newman looked out at her passengers and wondered: when hundreds of lives depend on one pilot's actions, what happens when he faces an impossible decision that puts them all at risk? From that chilling question, the former flight attendant wrote Falling (out July 6), a heart-pounding debut novel that might be this summer's most-talked-about thriller.
When the plot kicks off, Bill, a career pilot for Coastal Airways, has just reached cruising altitude. As his plane jets from Los Angeles to New York City, he receives an email from his wife, Carrie - strange, because they'd been in a nasty argument when Bill left for his flight. He opens the email to see a photo of Carrie and their young son, bound and blindfolded in their living room, with a bomb strapped to Carrie's chest. Soon, the next message comes through: his family has been kidnapped.

Once he’s completely finished on FX’s Fargo season 4, Noah Hawley will be jumping into his Star Trek feature at Paramount “as soon as possible” he tells Deadline today. We broke back in November how the Fargo and Legion creator was beaming up for the next sequel in the studio’s franchise.
But two interesting takeaways from our conversation are that it’s not necessarily set in stone yet to star the younger cast of characters from the Bad Robot movies, plus it’s probably not going to be connected to the Alex Kurtzman universe that’s being built over at CBS All Access.
“I have my own take on Star Trek,” said Hawley when we asked him if the sequel will feature the most recent film’s cast, “and going back to what I loved about the series Next Generation, when a lot of franchises focus on ‘might...

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures is in final talks with Noah Hawley to write and direct the next Star Trek film. Through his 26 Keys production banner he will produce along with JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot banner. I don’t have too much more to report on the film, but my understanding is Hawley will helm the fourth film in this iteration of the venerable franchise, with the Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban.
In addition to his groundbreaking series Legion, Hawley serves as executive producer, writer, director and showrunner on FX’s Emmy-winning limited series Fargo. He currently is in production on the fourth season, which stars Chris Rock, with Hawley directing the first episodes. Both series are produced under Hawley’s 26 Keys.
Hawley made his feature film directorial debut on Lucy in the Sky, which premiered at Toronto before Fox Searchlight released in the fall.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Legion series finale on FX.
After three mind-bending and time-traveling seasons, Legion came to an end tonight by going full circle, including on the soundtrack with The Who’s “Happy Jack.”
A baby, a showdown with the parasitic Farouk (Navid Negahban), a new beginning and future X-Men boss Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd) empathically telling his powerful telepathic son David Heller/Legion (Dan Stevens) that he was “trapped in a war you didn’t start.” Did Daddy make it all better in the end of the series finale co-directed and co-penned by Hawley? Could anyone make it all better for the perpetual battle zone that was David’s psyche?
Well, Legion being Legion, yes and no, as the self-described “twisted rainbow” and exquisitely crafted series co-starring Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza Jermaine Clement, Stephanie Corneliussen and Lauren Tsai made clear tonight...

They made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Chris Rock has joined the cast of “Fargo” Season 4 — or “Year Four,” as creator Noah Hawley prefers. The stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and director will play the head of an African American crime syndicate who goes to war with the Italian mafia in Kansas City, Missouri during the 1950s.
“I’m a fan of ‘Fargo’ and I can’t wait to work with Noah,” Rock said in a statement.
John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions, announced the official renewal at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday morning. The release stated production on Season 4 will begin in 2019 and also provided the first synopsis for the new episodes:
In 1950, at the end of two great American migrations — that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the Us at the turn of the last century and settled...

The Last Witch Hunter has been cooking in the cauldron for years and now it’s really starting to heat up. Last month we reported that Elijah Wood had joined a cast that includes Michael Caine, Vin Diesel, and Rose Leslie, and now German actress Julie Engelbrecht has been cast as the film’s villain, the Witch Queen.
Deadline reports the signing of Julie Engelbrecht to the Lionsgate/Summit fantasy action film that follows a witch hunter who is the last of his kind (Diesel) and spends his time hunting witches in New York City. But when the Witch Queen (Engelbrecht) seeks to acquire a relic that will befall a plague upon humanity, the witch hunter must team with another witch (Leslie) in order to save mankind from imminent doom. The Last Witch Hunter marks Julie Engelbrecht’s (Before The Fall, Rasmus and Johanna, The Red Baron) American movie debut.

Tom Schilling is one of Germany’s biggest stars. A former child actor who has seen much success in his adult career, he gave strong turns in Before the Fall – winning an award that garnered him a scholarship to go study at the Strasburg Institute in New York – and 2008’s Oscar-nominated The Baader Meinhof Complex. Quite fluent in English, the actor will soon be seen in North America in the big-screen adaptation of Suite Française, the dramedy Posthumous starring Brit Marling, and the historical drama The Woman in Gold, starring Ryan Reynolds, Tatiana Maslany and Helen Mirren.
Back in his native Germany, however, Schilling received much acclaim for the 2012 film Oh Boy!, winning a German Film Award and a Bambi Award for his portrayal of aimless slacker Niko Fischer. Now, audiences in North America can check out his award-winning performance as well, although the film has a new title: A Coffee in Berlin.

Back in October of last year we got the first word that Unbroken Films partners Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) and Adrienne Biddle were partnering with Marc Platt to produce Grim Night for Universal, and now finally a director has been chosen.
Per Variety, German helmer Dennis Gansel is in negotiations to make his U.S. directorial debut on Grim Night, which is based on the original screenplay and short film by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey. The film is set in a world where people lock themselves indoors one night a year for fear of random attacks from creatures known as the Grims. Below is a promo trailer put together by Bertino last year when he was marketing the idea to various studios.

Back in August, Bradley Cooper (The Words) who was signed on to star as Eric Draven in Relativity Media‘s totally unnecessary and much maligned remake of The Crow, exited the role supposedly due to scheduling conflicts between production of The Crow and production of the Alex Proyas directed Paradise Lost.
We now have the second bit of “good news” about the proposed remake of The Crow by Relativity Media. According to TwitchFilm, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders) who was slated to start shooting the remake early next year has also departed the project. The site reports that director F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall, Monkey’s Paw) is being floated as a possible replacement.
Relativity’s remake of The Crow will hopefully never make it to theaters.

The proposed reboot of the 1994 Alex Proyas film, The Crow, is a project with a perpetual revolving door, it seems. It was only a couple of months ago that Bradley Cooper stepped away from starring in the movie. Now, the film has also lost its director. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) has backed out of the project, rumored to be taking on a reboot of Highlander.
Fresnadillo had replaced original director Stephen Norrington, who had been working from a script by Nick Cave on The Crow. When Cave was removed from the project, Norrington followed, and Fresnadillo was working from a script by Watchmen co-writer Alex Tse. Fresnadillo and Tse had lined up Cooper to star, but Cooper dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
Interestingly, Cooper stepped away from The Crow to work with Alex Proyas on Paradise Lost.
Now, the hunt is on again for a new director, with F.

He was linked back in February this year, now Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("28 Weeks Later," "Intruders") is the latest director to have dropped out of the long-struggling remake of "The Crow" at Relativity Media reports Twitchfilm
Director Stephen Norrington was initially slated to direct from a script by Nick Cave and Mark Wahlberg rumoured to be interested in starring. Both Norrington and Cave left, replaced by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Alex Tse respectively while Bradley Cooper actually signed on to play the title character.
Then Cooper left due to scheduling conflicts with "Paradise Lost". Now Fresnadillo is gone as well, rumour being that he might move onto the "Highlander" reboot at Summit. In either case he's out. A new director is currently being sought with F. Javier Gutierrez ("Before the Fall") already said to be under consideration.

He's moving on to other things now, however, while producer Edward "I'll get this film made if I have to hold someone at gunpoint to do it" Pressman goes back to the well of acclaimed foreign directors.
No word yet on why the director is passing on this new adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel, but Twitch is reporting rumblings that Before the Fall's F. Javier Gutierrez might be the next person to sign on to direct. Of course, it's too early to tell whether or not he'll stick around long enough to do it.
Sooner or later this sucker will get off the ground. We're all waiting for it with bated breath, right?

The Crow reboot can’t seem to catch a break. After it looked like the movie was all set to go with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) directing and Bradley Cooper starring, the project had a setback 2 months ago when Cooper dropped out.
Supposedly, they were looking at other lead actors, including Channing Tatum and Mark Wahlberg, but that must not have gone too well, because a new report reveals that director Carlos Fresnadillo has also left the project.
According to Twitch, Relativity is looking for a new director and F Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) is one name that is being considered. As for Fresnadillo, the report also states he may be taking on a reboot of Highlander, but consider it just a rumor at this point.
We’re assuming that Relativity is still going to move forward with their plans for a “gritty reboot” based on the original comic book series.

After entering development hell with Stephen Norrington (with a screenplay by Nick Cave), Intruders and 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was attached to direct a reboot of The Crow for Relativity Media. Twitch now reports that the Spanish director is exiting the project with Before The Fall's F. Javier Gutierrez being floated as a possible replacement. Back in August, Bradley Cooper left the project leaving Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum in talks to play Eric Draven, a man brutally murdered who comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder. The mvie is based on James O'barr's legendary comic of the same name. Brandon Lee was the first to play Draven in Dimension//Miramax's 1994 The Crow.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that Bradley Cooper - who was to star in the upcoming reboot/remake of the classic film The Crow - left the film due to shooting schedule conflicts. And now, Twitch Film is reporting that director has left the project as well. Rumblings are suggesting that Fresnadillo could do another reboot, Highlander, instead. Twitch also says that Before The Fall director F. Javier Gutierrez is a possibility to replace Fresnadillo. And now Twitch has learned that Fresnadillo, the director of Intruders and 28 Weeks Later, is gone. Though nothing is definite on this front yet we're hearing rumblings that Fresnadillo may take over the Highlander reboot for Summit but Highlander or no Highlander he's not doing The Crow any more and the hunt is on for a new director with Before The Fall's being floated as a possibility. What do you think of the news?...

Twitch Film reports Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has bowed out of The Crow reboot, following in previously attached director Stephen Norrington's footsteps. The Spanish filmmaker behind 28 Weeks Later and the upcoming Intruders filled the Crow 's director's chair after Norrington left over creative disputes. Twitch doesn't say why Fresnadillo's gone, but I think it was a telling sign that something was up when he boarded Summit's Highlander remake. There are now talks that F. Javier Gutierrez ( Before the Fall ) may be his replacement, but take that as a rumor for now.
