Julianne Moore’s eye fills the screen. She peers intently into the looking glass, her features sharply lit by naked bulbs, the kind surrounding a backstage dressing room mirror. Half her face is devoid of make-up, a blank, untouched canvas. She leans forward and continues carefully drawing a coal-black line around the rim of her eyelid, leaning back to admire the results. Her character, Charley, is getting dressed up to meet her friend George (Colin Firth) for an intimate dinner at her Los Angeles home.
"You see who this woman is by what she cares about," Moore tells us of her new film, A Single Man, "which is make-up. And then you (recognize) how beautifully she has achieved it, and you realize here is this woman who has got all of this artistry. But it’s artificial. It’s artifice. So you see these two sides to Charley right away in this one little shot. »

Lights. Cameras. Birthday Action (for this, the 30th of November). Only one month left to go and it's 2010. How crazy is that?
Ridley, Terrence (in the 70s) and Marc
1835 Mark Twain's books have been adapted into movies ever since the movies began. Most notably The Prince and the Pauper and any tale of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer
1920 Virginia Mayo 40s and 50s star, frequent Danny Kaye foil
1926 Richard Crenna, character actor
1927 Robert Guillaume, "Benson"
1929 Dick Clark, seemingly immortal creature who may finally be destroyed by the rise of his spiritual offspring Ryan Seacrest. It's all very Cronos vs. Zeus, only without the thunderbolts
1937 Ridley Scott, manly director whose movies are usually way better when they're shot through with a strong female presence. Consider the three classics: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. The rest of the filmography surely has its moments but that's the trinity right there.
1943 Terence Malick, »

Do you ever celebrate the birthdays of your favorite movie folk? You should. Here are your options for 11/27
1940 Bruce Lee Chinese American trailblazer, 70s icon, legend. Without him, whose to say how long it would have taken martial arts films to gain as much international popularity? Without him, no Uma Thurman in a yellow track suit.
1951 Kathryn Bigelow director, action fan. An Oscar nominee in about 2 months and a week.
1956 William Fichtner actor
1957 Callie Khouri, screenwriter. She'll always have Thelma & Louise
1957 Kevin O'Connell, the most nominated never-winning Oscar anything. He's been nominated 20 times (!) for his sound work. He has only his Emmy and lucrative blockbuster heavy career to comfort him. His next project is the Gyllenhaal action flick Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. [editor's note: You may recall that the second podcast ever here at Tfe was an interview with his then working partner Greg P Russell whose own Oscar tally totals 12 nominations without a win.]
1963 Fisher Stevens, Michelle Pfeiffer's boyfriend during her Catwoman years
1968 Michael Vartan, French-American actor (Alias)
1978 Unax Ugalde, Spanish hottie... seduced Julianne Moore »

Cinematic birthdays for Nov. 19th, this time with lighter loafers.
1889 Clifton Webb, reportedly as out as an actor could be back in the day but Oscar never gave him their top prize. They never give out actors the statue. Sad, but true. Classic films include Oscar favorites like Laura and Three Coins in the Fountain (review) but he's most famous for playing Mr. Belvedere, the uptight gentlemen bachelor of a certain obvious if unspoken persuasion. I saw the first of the three Belvedere films Sitting Pretty (1948) a few years ago and it was quite an... unh... time capsule.
1933 Larry King, asker of inane questions
1942 Calvin Klein makes pretty things
1938 Ted Turner took Jane Fonda away from me (the movies... same thing) ages ago and I've never forgiven him.
1954 Kathleen Quinlan an actress I don't really get
1958 Charlie Kaufman mindbender
1961 Meg Ryan have you ever noticed how people turn on actresses »

I am not too familiar with the films of Atom Egoyan, but having seen his last - Adoration - I believed I'd be quite interested in exploring more of his work. When I heard about Chloe, I wanted to get the details, especially the cast. With Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried acting together, what more can I ask for?

- - - About the Movie: Catherine (Julliane Moore) and David (Liam Neeson), she a doctor, he a professor, are at first glance the perfect couple. Happily married with a talented teenage son (Max Thieriot), they appear to have an idyllic life. But when David misses a flight and his surprise birthday party, Catherine's long simmering suspicions rise to the surface. Suspecting infidelity, she decides to hire an escort (Amada Seyfried) to seduce her husband and test his loyalty. Catherine finds herself 'directing' Chloe's encounters with David, »

Fans of gay film films have been very curious about the movie A Single Man ever since word broke that Tom Ford was directing the movie based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood. Starring Colin Firth (Mamma Mia, Apartment Zero), Julianne Moore (Savage Grace, Far From Heaven), Matthew Goode (Brideshead Revisited) and Nicholas Hoult (Skins) just had its coming out, so to speak, at the Venice Festival where it made a big splash.
Not only did the movie win the Queer Lion (for best gay movie) but Colin Firth was named best actor.
A Single Man is playing Monday at the Toronto Film Festival and then heads to London for the London Film Festival before opening in the U.S. sometime in 2009.
Here is the trailer for the movie and given that it's directed by Tom Ford, it's appropriately stylish and very intriguing!

- We aren't yet close enough to the moment where Toronto's Bloor street, or more specifically, a three-block radius of upper scale designer name shopping portion of it, pulls out the red carpet to receive Tom Ford, and yet, I'm beginning to think that my original assessment on the probabilities of this being only slightly better than what he could pull off during a Vogue fashion shoot were off. I didn't think much about the idea of a fashion designer making his feature length filming debut - sure he'd bring his A game to costume design department and perhaps have a clear idea about the interior shots, but what else could he theoretically do? I once had that apprehensive feeling about a painter/artist turned filmmaker named Schnabel. We'll wait before official critical word from the Lido to push this title up as a high priority film to cover at Tiff, »

I'm pretty sure you'll have Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman is to play) Amelia Earheart (Yup, Hilary Swank!), Julia Child (Meryl Streep), Coco Chanel (Audrey Tautou) and Bruno (Sasha Baron Cohen) on your list already! On the other end of the spectrum, there's Edward Cullen (Rob Pattinson), Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) to consider, esp by the Twilight fans.
- - -
- - - But hey, if that's the list, then it seems so predictable already. How about giving those lesser-known but equally fascinating (and mostly young) characters their share of the spotlight?
So, here they are: tMF's Ten Most Fascinating Movie Characters for 2009!

# 10 - 'Columbus' - Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) - At first, I thought Jesse Eisenberg's character, James Brennan, in Greg Mottola's Adventureland would be the better choice. But then again, when you've watched Eisenberg many times, you know he's awesome in comedy, »

If you're out in Los Angeles, show some Filmmaker Magazine pride by going this wonderful panel. Our very own James Ponsoldt will be taking part in a Screenwriting Seminar at the Dave Eggers-run non-profit writing & tutorial center, 826La. The panel also includes Capote writer Dan Futterman, E.T. writer Melissa Mathison, Glasgow Philips ("South Park," Nickelodeon's "Kung Fu Panda") and Howard Rodman, who wrote Savage Grace and Joe Gould's Secret. The moderator is James Urbaniak, who needs no introduction to any self-respecting indie film fan. »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

It's that time of year again when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka AMPAS aka The Oscars) invites more Hollywood peeps to join them. In Contention shares the list and rather than repeat the whole thing for you or reiterate last year's first time nominees who are mostly invited (you remember them), I'd just like to pinpoint a few random names I'm especially happy / surprised to see so recognized. They are...
Emily Blunt who should've been nominated for The Devil Wears Prada.James Franco ... was it the Milk snub?Hugh Jackman did such a fine job as host. Now that he's a member so there's one more vote for the next time Nicole Kidman gives a brilliant performance. Woot!Jane Lynch is always a comic highlight. Her inclusion delights me
Jeffrey Wright still needs a movie role as good as his part in Angels in AmericaHoward A »

- Kirsten Stewart. Check. Sundance Film Festival entry? Check. Road Movie formula? Check. Almost 18 months since its world premiere? Um check again. I imagine that the more a film goes without a distributor, the more the asking price falls, which may or may not be the case for a film that has Twilight's Stewart in the line-up. With an empty spot in their slate, Samuel Goldwyn have picked up Udayan Prasad's The Yellow Handkerchief - a film that flew so low on the radar that I didn't even know it was playing at the festival while I was in attendance which in itself sounds bizarre since it has got some fine talent attached - I like this Redmayne kid from Savage Grace and Maria Bello has fine perfs in A History of Violence and Thank You for Smoking working for her on her resume. Loosely based on a Pete »

- Apart from the parties, the hardest ticket to get into at Cannes is surprisingly the special selection in the Critic's Week (over at the section with the less star coverage from the journos attending.) I was one of the rare people with a press badge to find a seat, buyers from the multiple territories got first dibs on the few seats available. The special film selected is actually called "Godfathers’s movie" (Film des Parrains). The curators select a filmmaker and have that person introduce a new talent. This year they invited a pair to introduce a new member to the family. The Critic's Week invited Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intacto) to serve as godfathers to Gabe Ibáñez and his film Hierro. Starring is the strikingly beautiful actress Elena Anaya from Talk to Her, Savage Grace and breakout role in Sex and Lucia). She »

'now, go and wash your teeth!'
Julianne Moore isn't so good with her onscreen children. She ignores them, kills them, abandons them... even seduces them. Even when the famous redhead loves them (Children of Men, A Map of the World, The Forgotten) terrible fates await the poor tykes. If Moore didn't exude such warmth as a star onscreen she'd have a full-fledged Joan Crawford rep.
Still if you had to choose one MooreMommy to be yours: coked up sexual Amber Waves in Boogie Nights? pharmaceutically enhanced foul-mothed step-mom Linda Partridge in Magnolia? cake-hating lesbian Laura Brown in The Hours? inappropriate and domineering Barbara Baekeland in Savage Grace? or any of her distracted housewives from Far From Heaven, [safe] to The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio ... none of whom have any time for their children / step children what with their heavy marital problems and poisonous environments? Which would it be? Or »

Mother’s Day. Of our many Hallmark holidays, this is the one that’s easiest to get on board with. Mothers are the unsung superheroes of this world. They raise us and they feed us. Their love is unconditional. Even the troublemaker who leaked that workprint of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” online has a mother who loves him. Probably.
So we all agree: moms rock. That doesn’t mean they’re always welcome though. You probably don’t want to bring her to the bar or to some friend’s house party. You definitely don’t want to bring her along on a date. And unless you get a thrill from squirming around in embarrassment, there are at least a few movies that are best left for occasions other than Mother’s Day. Movies like these…
Director Tom Kalin’s “Savage Grace” is all about the naughty mommy love. »
