Romanian contribution, 4 July 2005

Author: eddavp2 from Romania

I have seen only the first part of this film that is broadcast on Via Sat History now so we can see it in my town, in Romania. I found it a good drama. I don't know about the accuracy of the historical facts. But what I noticed immediately is the music. The music is ROMANIAN FOLK MUSIC, from my region (north of Transilvania)and is gathered and performed by GRIGORE LESE, a musician but also a popular Romanian folk singer.Even the lyrics are in Romanian.I was amazed and I'd like to know what is the reason, the link between a moment from the Scotland history and our folk songs. The music is very beautiful indeed. In the first song, the words refers to the Romanian folk girls that in 18 century lost their boyfriends who died on the battle field for the Austrian emperor. In the second song I've heard, the words tell about the life that is ephemeral and they accompany very well the love scene between Queen Mary and Bothwell. They are profound, dramatic songs. Maybe that's way they used our Romanian music. I looked then and found many Romanian actors in the movie. Young, so quite unknown in Romania. I wrote these because I found no mention to the music of this film. So, maybe somebody has an opinion.
