134 New Names Invited to Join the Academy

1 July 2009 1:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

Depp's Job Makes Him Sick

14 June 2009 7:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Johnny Depp falls ill after every film he makes - because he puts so much effort into creating his characters.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star never gets sick while he is working, but as soon as he finishes each job he comes down with a mystery ailment which keeps him in bed for weeks at a time.

And Depp is convinced he over-exerts himself while he is acting.

He says, "There is a period once you finish a guy - a character - when you're looking to go back to yourself and sometimes it can manifest itself in illness. After I made The Libertine, I was in bed for two weeks. When you're working, you don't get sick, then suddenly it hits you like a two-by-four." »

November 2004: Steven Daly on Johnny Depp

28 May 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

A Hollywood golden boy after his Oscar nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp is still keeping critics and fans guessing. Coming up: two kid-magnet movies (Tim Burton’s new version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a planned Pirates sequel), a Victorian drama (Finding Neverland, about the writer of Peter Pan), and the very adult The Libertine. In London, Depp talks about falling for French pop star Vanessa Paradis (mother of their two children), being attacked by Fox News, and the philosophy behind his unconventional career. »

Rupert Friend

25 February 2009 3:00 PM, PST | Interview Magazine | See recent Interview Magazine news »

The tale of young Rupert Friend begins like many other British coming-of-age stories: in a quaint, almost anachronistic one-horse village in the English countryside. But unlike so many other legends of English lore, Mr. Friend’s journey so far has not involved any kings or warlocks or elves or quests for magical golden rings (though the same cannot be said for tights, which Friend has donned on more than one occasion). His trajectory has been somewhat more earthy: grew up in the county of Oxfordshire in a house with no Vcr; became enthralled with the idea of traveling around the world when he saw his first film in a theater, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989); decided it was his destiny to be like Indiana Jones; discovered that Indiana Jones was an archaeologist, and that most archaeologists aren’t as proficient with whips or as prolific in their love lives, »
