While we generally like to think that human beings have catalogued most of the animal kingdom, the fact is that there are still plenty of biological mysteries to uncover. After all, gorillas were only recognized by science in the 1850s, and don’t even get me started on the extinction-dodging coelacanth. That’s why cryptozoology is such a fascinating subject, with amateur zoologists insisting that there’s still a little bit of magic left in the world.
Of course, not every legendary cryptid creature is as cuddly as the jackelope, and that’s why we’ve come up with this list recommending six underrated movies inspired by cryptozoology! After all, what good are monsters if we can’t enjoy scary movies about them?
As usual, we’ll be following a couple of rules in order to keep things concise. First of all, no double-dipping, which means we’ll only be...

There is a thin line between the mockumentary and the pseudo-documentary. While both categories warp the concept of non-fiction filmmaking, mockumentaries are satirical and often comedic, while pseudo-documentaries exist in the horror space. Think "Best in Show" versus "Cannibal Holocaust". The pseudo-documentary uses the idea of the truth to weaponize our fear. The more real the film seems, the scarier it is to the viewer. Yes, it's only a movie, but a good pseudo-documentary will worm its way into the back of your brain, asking, "But what if it is real?"
This category of film is often included in discussions of found footage films in general, as both try to convince the viewer what they're watching is real. Found footage is typically footage that is, well, found and is presented as unedited evidence of a crime, haunting, creature, or anything terrifying, but, with the pseudo-documentary, the filmmakers utilize interviews and...

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

It’s safe to say John Bailey does not miss the trappings of the president’s office at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Speaking at a retrospective celebrating his five decades of cinematography work at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage festival, where Bailey will be honored with a lifetime achievement award this week, he told an audience in Torun that his Academy presidency was not always rewarding. “I was not particularly enamored of the internal politics.”
Bailey’s two terms atop the institution, which ended this year, coincided with turmoil the 92-year-old Academy faced over the #oscarssowhite and the #metoo movements – including a sexual harassment allegation against Bailey himself for which he was exonerated – and scandals focused on the over-budget Academy museum project.

Director Werner Herzog doesn’t make cinéma vérité documentaries, nor does he conduct journalistic interviews. He likes to fiddle with the truth in films such as 1982’s ”Fitzcarraldo,” about an obsessed opera lover. In his 1999 manifesto, ”Minnesota Declaration,” Herzog wrote: ”There are deeper strata of truth in cinema, and there is such a thing as poetic, ecstatic truth. It is mysterious and elusive, and can be reached only through fabrication and imagination and stylization.”
Through the decades Herzog has toyed with his public persona as a fearless, death-defying, slightly crazed filmmaker who was rumored to have pulled a gun on leading man Klaus Kinski on the 1972 jungle set of ”Aguirre, the Wrath of God.” His own German-accented voiceover narration has become famous in its own right, and he was comfortable enough as an actor to make fun of himself in Zak Penn’s improvised 2004 mockumentary “Incident at Loch Ness,” among...

The documentary Atari: Game Over investigates the burial of E.T. cartridges in the New Mexico desert. Here's our review...
Ask any gamer to name the medium's most famous legend, and they might tell you about E.T.
The story goes that, back in 1982, the videogame tie-in was so rushed, and so appallingly received, that Atari was forced to quietly bury millions of unsold cartridges in the New Mexico desert. Within months of the game's release, Atari had gone from owning an 80 percent share of the videogame market to collapse, and thus, an enduring myth was born: E.T. killed Atari.
Atari: Game Over digs into the true story behind the legend, and its director, Zak Penn, is no stranger to modern mythmaking - he's the screenwriter behind such comic book blockbusters as X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk, and he also made the quirky mockumentary Incident At Loch Ness with Werner Herzog.

Ever wondered about the inner workings of a vampire’s mind? Do you spend your spare time thinking about how a group of flat-sharing vampires divide up the household chores, or how they decide what to wear for a night on the town? Yeah, so do we. All these musings and many more are answered in Jemaine Clement and Taika Waitit’s hilarious mockumentary, What We Do In the Shadows. To celebrate the release of the Flight of the Conchords writers’ latest project, we take a look at the other best mockumentaries to hit the silver screen.
This is Spinal Tap (1984)
What many consider the ultimate mockumentary, this cult classic has topped many lists since the 80’s. Most of the dialogue was ad-libbed and the actors were accredited as writers as well because of this. One of the best rock movie quotes, “turn it up to 11”, comes from this masterpiece.

You knew it was only a matter of time. After Netflix scored with original programming like "Orange Is the New Black" and "Arrested Development," Amazon quickly jumped into the game -- and now Xbox is, too. Pretty soon, look forward to new shows from your microwave and blender. Xbox will launch Xbox: Originals this June with 12 projects. They will be available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, and other Microsoft devices, and, of course, the shows will offer "interactive capabilities." To prove they're not kidding around, Xbox Entertainment Studios has attracted names like Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott, who are attached to two separate scripted projects based on the “Halo” franchise. Because hey, you can never get enough "Halo." Other shows in production include an unscripted series about international street soccer, an original drama about robotic servants in a dystopian world, and a documentary about the search for discarded Atari games in...

Who would have thought that digging up millions of E.T. video game cartridges out of a New Mexico landfill would have been such big news. A few months ago it was reported that writer Zak Penn (X-Men 2, Avengers, Incident At Loch Ness) would be directing a documentary for Xbox that tells the story about Atari's 1983 E.T. video game, it's failure, and if the legend about them burying millions of copies of it in a New Mexico landfill was true. There's been a lot of speculation about the facts of this story over the years, but it turns out one of the most infamous urban legends in video games is true.
Penn and his documentary film crew went out to the landfill yesterday to excavate it, and they found the games. It's still unclear whether or not there are actually millions of copies down there. Apparently they've found hundreds so far,...

If 2013 was the year of streaming platforms making their entrance into the original programming game, 2014 is looking to be the one in which consoles do the same. In December, Microsoft's Xbox greenlit its first show, a series of docs about the digital revolution, the first of which is being directed by Zak Penn ("Incident at Loch Ness"). And now Sony’s PlayStation Network is kicking off its first slate of originals with "Powers," an hour-long drama based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The comic book series is about a pair of homicide detectives who investigates cases involving people with superhuman abilities -- "powers." Novelist and comic book writer Charlie Huston penned the pilot for the project, which was initially in development at FX -- the network actually shot a pilot in 2011. The first season will run 10 episodes and will be produced by Sony Pictures Television...

We head back a decade to look at a few films that deserve more attention. Here’s our list of 25 underappreciated movies of 2004...
Think back to 2004, and you might dredge up hazy memories of the computer-generated fairytale sequel Shrek 2, Alfonso’s Harry Potter installment, The Prisoner Of Azkaban, or maybe Mel Gibson’s phenomenally successful Passion Of The Christ.
It’s rather less likely that you’ll remember some of the films on this list. You’re probably aware of the drill by now: we’ve gone back into our distant, beer-addled memories to find 25 of the less commonly-lauded movies from the year 2004.
Some of them did reasonably well at the time, but appear to have been forgotten since (especially the one eclipsed by its own internet meme), while others were coolly received by the public or critics (and sometimes...

We are going to start seeing a lot of original programing coming from Xbox in the near future. One of those projects is a Halo series being developed by Steven Spielberg. We have no idea when we'll see that, but we do know what the first exclusive Xbox film will be.
A production company called Lightbox will be developing a series of films about the start of the digital revolution for Xbox Entertainment Studios. The first of these films will be an interesting-sounding documentary about Atari and the story of how they literally buried millions of copies of their E.T. video game. Here's some information from the press release,
The first film in the groundbreaking series investigates the events surrounding the great video game burial of 1983. The Atari Corporation, faced with overwhelmingly negative response to “Et the Video Game,” buried millions of unsold game cartridges in the middle of the night,...

The mockumentary is an underutilized method of delivering a cinematic story, especially in the gimmick-friendly horror genre. And I don.t mean like The Office, either. I mean films that generally blend narrative with different visual techniques to help the story feel more genuine and real. Movies like The Last Broadcast, Lake Mungo and Incident at Loch Ness are standouts not only because they.re arguably great films, but because there hasn.t been a flood of knock-offs like the proper found-footage genre has been hit with. It is with open arms that we welcome Christopher MacBride.s secret society horror The Conspiracy into our lives, now that XLrator Media has stepped in and snagged the U.S. distribution rights. The film was surprise hit at last year.s Fantastic Fest, and then nothing much was heard of it until now, though no release plans were mentioned in the release...

From dragging a steamship across a mountain to eating his own shoes, Werner Herzog has always traded in the unexpected. Now he is co-starring in a Tom Cruise action film
Werner Herzog has dragged a real-life steamship across a real-life mountain; he once pulled a gun on his longtime star collaborator Klaus Kinski and told him to act or die; he took a film crew to the lip of la Grande Soufrière, a volcano in Guadeloupe that seismologists had predicted would erupt at any moment (it didn't); he was accidentally shot in the stomach during a filmed interview with the BBC ("It is not a significant bullet") and once, aided by Californian chef Alice Waters, he cooked – with garlic and herbs – and then ate his own shoe, an event chronicled in his friend Les Blank's evocatively title docushort Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe.

Zak Penn and Chris Morgan are both known for their contributions to Hollywood's big blockbuster world. Penn is best known for his work in the superhero genre, having a hand in movies like X2, Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers; while Morgan has written the last three Fast and Furious movies and has number four currently in production. With their history it only makes sense for Penn and Morgan to team up, so that's just what they're doing. Deadline says that two two writers have successfully pitched a new action movie idea to Universal described as being "in the vein of Chronicle." Penn, who has directing experience making films like Incident at Loch Ness and The Grand, will be helming the new project and writing the script, while Morgan is attached as a producer. Outside of the comparison to Josh Trank's hit from earlier...

My thanks to Martha Thomases for her column this week. In it she confessed to having a fondness for the 1980 Flash Gordon film that started the immortal Sam Jones and Max Van Sydow. It’s bad film and she knows it but she has legit reasons for her fondness of it. Martha, just so you know, the 2007 SyFy TV series is much worse, not even having space ships, for crying out loud! Flash Gordon without space ships?! Talk about not getting the concept!
I say thank you because I had no idea what I was going to do for my column this week and now I do. There are bad films and one CD that I know are horrible but I felt a compulsion to go out and buy a copy of them. This isn’t the same as the weird films of which I own a copy and that...

So I finally joined the clamoring hordes who have gone to see The Avengers and, yes, I had a really good time. No spoilers but I can define my favorite scene in two words that won’t spoil the show: “Puny god.” ‘Nuff said. Those who have seen it know what I’m talking about. I also really enjoyed the little scene at the end of all the credits.
It’s made a billion dollars worldwide, and its already on its way towards making a bazillion, I’m sure. Marvel has played it very canny, building up to it by way of Iron Man (I and II), Thor and Captain America. You’d almost think that The Avengers success was inevitable and you’d be terribly, terribly wrong.
I got two words for you.
Joss Whedon.

One cryptozoological oddity I'm surprised has been explored more - especially in the "found footage" arena - over the last few years is the Loch Ness Monster.
Sure, we've seen a few films in the past few year - including Incident at Loch Ness - but I'm talking about a genuinely scary monster movie.
Well, it appears The Woman in Black's James Watkins is going to shepherd a Loch Ness project along with the newly-established Altitude Film Entertainment from Will Clarke.

Did you hear yesterday's news? Whether you did or not, I'm sure after I mention it you will realize it is inspired news. In fact, not only is it brilliant casting, it's the best casting decision you'll probably hear about this week. What the what? What could this news be?
Turns out, Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Fitzcarraldo) will play the villain opposite Tom Cruise in One Shot, an adaptation of the 2005 Lee Child novel directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The film will serve as Herzog's first major acting role at the age of 69 and he's joining a cast that already includes Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo and Robert Duvall.

Tom Cruise has been a movie star for roughly thirty years. In that time, he's fought such onscreen adversaries as Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Oprah's couch. Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, he's about to face off against his most intense opponent yet: director Werner Herzog.
EW reports that Herzog has signed on to co-star in the upcoming Cruise vehicle "One Shot" as "a character named The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war that first came to life in one of Lee Child's bestselling Jack Reacher novels." Herzog knows a thing or two about directing movies about ex-prisoners of war -- he made the documentary "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" and and the fiction film "Rescue Dawn" about just that subject.
Earlier today, I got a press release about Herzog's new documentary "Into the Abyss," which opens in November, and I was thinking about possibly interviewing Herzog.

German auteur director Werner Herzog (Into the Abyss, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Grizzly Man) has been cast as the villain in Christopher McQuarries's One Shot (which he adapted from Lee Child's book series), starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins and Robert Duvall. Here are more details on the project, in which diminutive Cruise will play strapping military cop-turned-drifter Jack Reacher, with Herzog as The Zec, a former P.O.W. and head of the conspiracy Reacher is investigating. Herzog is a superb actor, as his roles in Zak Penn's Incident at Loch Ness and The Grand attest. "I'm good as an actor,'' Herzog, who has appeared in more than a dozen films, told me some years back. ''I've got six to eight actors' agencies chasing me ...

Well this has got to be one of the most unexpected and exciting pieces of movie news I've heard so far this year. Paramount has just announced that German filmmaker Werner Herzog will play the villain in their upcoming adaptation of Lee Childs' One Shot. No joke! With all the fan backlash surrounding Tom Cruise being cast as the protagonist Jack Reacher, it's about time they found something to get people excited about this project. Of course, from a commercial standpoint, Herzog's casting will mean absolutely nothing, but for a certain group of cinephiles, their minds are now blown. Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins and Robert Duvall have also signed on to star in the film. According to Variety, Herzog will play a character named The Zec, "an ex-prisoner of war who arranges and stages the killing" of five people. While a sniper is accused of the murders, Jack Reacher steps...

Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski on the set of Cobra Verde Top Ten Werner Herzog Films
The films of Werner Herzog haunt that hazy corridor between dream and reality, where madness and the true nature of the universe lurk. They're surreal, but not by any of the boiler-plate attributes we associate with head-trip cinema. They're horrific, but never by cheap shocks. They're beautiful, but not in a painterly sense. Each one is a tone poem searching for both new images and what Herzog calls the "ecstatic truth," a blending of fact and fiction for a higher cause. There's a uniqueness to his films that's unforgettable.
I not only admire Herzog's films, I admire the man behind them. Herzog's fearlessness is fascinating. He's an artist who risks it all to get "the shot." Studio backlot shooting is not an option. His obsessive, nearly self-destructive need to film in the hottest of...

Screen Daily has revealed the cast for Werner Herzog’s next directorial effort, the horror film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? The movie marks Herzog’s first collaboration with fellow screen maverick David Lynch, who serves as executive producer.
Michael Shannon, the Bug star (pictured) who’s currently up for an Oscar for Revolutionary Road, Shadow Of The Vampire’s Willem Dafoe, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny, Fango fave Udo Kier and Lynch-film regular Grace Zabriskie will star in My Son, which Eric Bassett is producing. The movie is inspired by a true case in which a San Diego man, obsessed by a Sophocles play, murdered his mother with a sword. “I always wanted to make a horror film, but not with bloody axes and chainsaws,” Herzog tells the trade, though he previously dabbled in the genre with Nosferatu The Vampyre and the mockumentary Incident At Loch Ness.
