'Armored Star' Matt Dillon Praises The Talents Of Director Nimród Antal

8 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If you haven't been tuned in already, Nimród Antal is a name you're going to be hearing a lot more of in the future. The director is in the midst of steering "Predators," the Robert Rodriguez-produced reboot of the classic alien franchise, toward the big screen.

While shooting on that sci-fi flick continues, Antal's latest movie, the heist flick "Armored" arrived in theaters last Friday. In a recent conversation, star Matt Dillon, who plays an armored car security guard who finds himself in the middle of a high stakes robbery, couldn't stop singing the praises of his up-and-coming director.

"Nimród seems to be a real master," Dillon said. "I enjoyed filming primarily because Nimród is really good. You know you're in good hands. It's not just about action, but there's character development and strong performances."

Those performances come curtsey of vets like Dillon, Laurence Fishburne and Jean Reno, who »

December 4: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

5 December 2009 4:33 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but you’ll be busy planning your robbery of an armored car so you can pay for your holiday celebrations. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Armored this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched a bunch of other heist movies instead.” Instead Of: Armored, a crime drama about a group of security guards who decide to hold up the armored-car company that employs them... Watch: Do not miss director Nimród Antal’s debut feature, 2003’s Kontroll, a deeply intriguing look at ticket collectors on Budapest’s subway system; it may sound unlikely, but it’s a great film, very spooky and atmospheric. One of the great heist movies of recent years is the 2003 remake The Italian Job, »

Armored (review)

5 December 2009 3:44 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Can someone pul-eeze give Nimród Antal a decent script to direct? Since he returned from his ancestral Hungary -- he moved to Budapest at 17 after having grown up in Los Angeles; there, he made the brilliant and unclassifiable Kontroll -- he’s been the poster boy for intriguing talent getting squashed down and washed out by Hollywood. His thriller Vacancy was vaguely Hitchcockian enough to be mildly diverting, but this, his second studio film, is simply inscrutable... and not in a good way. »

Movies This Week: Everybody's Adrift in Armored Brothers

4 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Tired of turkey yet? I still have a pot of turkey soup, but with the chilly weather, it's hit the spot. There's quite a wide variety of new films out today, so take a look at the new options for taking a break from the holidaze.

Adrift in Tokyo -- A perpetual student rambles through Tokyo with the debt collector who'll cancel his debt in this surreal, funny, and sweet film. If you like your cities wierd and quirky with lots of heart and randomness, you just may fall in love with Adrift in Tokyo, and it's by the grace of Fantastic Fest that we're getting to see it, because it doesn't have U.S. distribution, so go help prove it's worth seeing (because it really is). Be aware though, it's only playing single shows Friday through Sunday, so catch it while you can. Read my review for more.  (Alamo »

Nimród Antal Gushes Over His Armored Cast

2 December 2009 9:11 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Nimród Antal 's latest movie, Armored, boasts an impressive cast for a relatively unknown director. Antal was born in Los Angeles, but he got his start working on movies in Hungary. His Hungarian movie Kontroll, which he wrote as well as directed, earned him international acclaim and the directing gig for Screen Gems' Vacancy, his first American movie.

Armored is Antal's second movie for Screen Gems, and he recently told Coming Soon that he accepted the job without a cast attached. Because of this, Antal was initially star struck by the talent assembled for Armored.

I can't speak for their reasons [for starring in the movie], but Matt Dillon ... to me Drugstore Cowboy was a huge movie for me when I was a young guy ... or a younger guy, and obviously, from all the Luc Besson films, Jean Reno was ... I mean, La Femme Nikita, when he shows up as the cleaner, that's forever embedded in my mind. »

my week at the movies: ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ ‘Armored,’ ‘Invictus,’ ‘It’s Complicated,’ ‘The Last Station’

30 November 2009 8:20 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Who wants a sparkly vampire boyfriend? I want an ass-kicking, violin-playing, cocaine-shooting-up, arrogant, superior, crime-solving genius boyfriend, and all the better if he’s played by Robert Downey Jr., who is probably just as fucked up as Holmes himself but is walking sex nevertheless. (Jude Law’s not so bad, either.) Oh my god I feel like I’ve been waiting for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (opens in the U.S. on December 25, and in the U.K. on December 26) forever, and I finally get to see it this week. Armored (opens in the U.S. on December 4 and in the U.K. on January 22, 2010) will not screen for critics, but I’ll attend a courtesy screening on Friday morning. No advanced screening is never a good sign for a movie, of course, but it’s especially disappointing when Nimród Antal’s first feature film, Kontroll, was so amazing. »

Blue Skies and Black Metal

"Across The Hall"

A stripped-down neo-noir with a twist, this feature debut for filmmaker Alex Merkin began as a 2005 short (starring Adrian Grenier, which can be found online here). Grenier didn't return, but Mike Vogel takes his place as Julian, a young man who races to a seedy hotel where his best friend's wayward fiancée (Brittany Murphy) and another man have aroused the suspicions of his pal, who's holed up "across the hall" with a bottle of whiskey and a gun.

Opens in New York and Los Angeles.

"Armored"

Having garnered a great deal of attention with his grungy murder mystery debut "Kontroll," American-born Hungarian helmer Nimród Antal first made his mark in Hollywood »

Birthday Suits, Well Directed

30 November 2009 6:05 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Lights. Cameras. Birthday Action (for this, the 30th of November). Only one month left to go and it's 2010. How crazy is that?

Ridley, Terrence (in the 70s) and Marc

1835 Mark Twain's books have been adapted into movies ever since the movies began. Most notably The Prince and the Pauper and any tale of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer

1920 Virginia Mayo 40s and 50s star, frequent Danny Kaye foil

1926 Richard Crenna, character actor

1927 Robert Guillaume, "Benson"

1929 Dick Clark, seemingly immortal creature who may finally be destroyed by the rise of his spiritual offspring Ryan Seacrest. It's all very Cronos vs. Zeus, only without the thunderbolts

1937 Ridley Scott, manly director whose movies are usually way better when they're shot through with a strong female presence. Consider the three classics: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. The rest of the filmography surely has its moments but that's the trinity right there.

1943 Terence Malick, »

question of the day: Does the casting of Adrien Brody and Topher Grace as action heroes signal a shift in action movies?

15 October 2009 5:03 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

So, the news came this week that Adrien Brody and Topher Grace would be headlining the upcoming Predator reboot from director Nimród Antal. Say what? Now, sure, Brody is majorly cool -- seriously, did you see The Brothers Bloom? Omg, you must -- and Grace was a hoot in that one bit in Ocean's Eleven -- but... really? Really? Antal made the awesome Kontroll a few years back, so that inspires a bit of hope, and, as Cinematical’s Elisabeth Rappe explains, Brody and Grace are sure to bring a certain je ne sais quoi to the flick: »

Nimród Antal directing Predators

2 July 2009 12:08 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

After weeks of conjecture, probing and just plain letting the rumors fly, a director has been locked down for Robert Rodriguez's Predators.

Nimród Antal, director of the subterranean fantasy thriller Kontroll and the tonally awkward yet sorta thrilling Vacancy will take the reins.

Personally, after the mediocrity of the Avp films (though AVP2 makes Avp look like a work of staggering genius), I don't know how much more I can take from this franchise. It seems like its been kicked to the curb and flogged like a dead horse. I hope it can be resurrected but I have little faith. »

Rodriguez Confirms Nimrod Antal is Directing Predators

2 July 2009 4:03 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Finally some confirmation! A few weeks ago, a rumor hit that The Descent director Neil Marshall would be directing Robert Rodriguez' Predators reboot. The very next day Rodriguez told everyone (through Harry Knowles) that the news wasn't true because he hadn't actually chosen the director yet (but had narrowed down the list). After some weeks of silence, we now have confirmation from Robert Rodriguez (via Ain't It Cool News) that Nimród Antal, of Kontroll and Vacancy, is set to direct Predators for Troublemaker Studios and 20th Century Fox. Don't worry, Rodriguez is making sure this is a very "non-studio" movie. Rodriguez did also answer some questions for Harry regarding the project. Before we get more into his choice of Nimród Antal, this is what he had to say when asked to go into the story a bit more. "I can't go too much into the story right now, because »

Nimrod Antal Leading the Predators Pack?

23 June 2009 3:42 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

There’s been lots of Internet buzz surrounding the upcoming Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators. Story details, casting rumors, and of course, the recent director lottery have been featured on websites everywhere for the past few weeks so what’s another day without more on the latest franchise restart?

Latino Review managed to shed some more light on the mysterious “Predators 7” – the small ring of filmmakers reportedly in the running to resurrect these bloodthirsty alien hunters. They’re saying that Nimród Antal (Kontroll, Vacancy) is not only on the list, but also the odds on favorite to snatch the coveted director’s chair.

I’ve yet to see Antal’s Kontroll despite hearing great things. To be honest, though, I love Vacancy. It’s a tense little suspense flick with some good performances and steadily mounting anxiety. This guy’s got a nice eye for visuals and has no trouble handling tension. »

Armored Trailer Starring Laurence Fishburne and Matt Dillon

17 April 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Believe it or not, there are two different armored truck heist movies in development right now, and I had no idea until today. How is this possible? The best part is that they're both called Armored. I imagine one will eventually have to be renamed, but as of right now, they're almost exact clones of each other. In both cases the story revolves around armored truck drivers who pull off inside jobs in order to score some serious cash. The first one [1] out of the gates is from Sony Screen Gems, and it stars Laurence Fishburne, Matt Dillon, Columbus Short, Jean Reno and Skeet Ulrich. Hungarian director Nimród Antal's previous credits include Vacancy and Kontroll. The other Armored [2] (which probably won't be out until 2010) stars Eric Bana, and and is directed by F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, A Man Apart) from a screenplay by David Ayer (The Fast and the Furious, »
