  • Continuity: When Harry and friends are riding in a cart from the Hogwarts Express station to Hogwarts, in a shot from behind, Luna Lovegood's head is facing to her left. In the following reverse angle, her head is facing to her right.

  • Continuity: When Harry is fighting off the Dementors, he produces a patronus and his wand is pointing at the Dementor that attacked him. When the scene cuts to Dudley on the ground, Harry's wand is at his side. When it cuts back to Harry, his wand is pointing at the dementor again.

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Lucius has Harry and company at wandpoint in the Department of Mysteries, Bellatrix Lestrange walks out from behind him. In the audio she is laughing maniacally and talking to Harry, but when you look at her, her mouth is barely moving. She mouths "He knows how to play" a full second after it is heard, and her mouth moves at a much slower pace. She also has a deadpan expression on her face, not the maniacal face you would expect her to have while laughing like that.

  • Continuity: In the scene of Professor Umbridge's first class with Harry and co. she gives them all books, then proceeds to tell the class what to expect. During her speech, several of the students's books - particularly Ron's - switch positions from being examined by the students to being flat on the desk. The position of the books repeatedly switches positions as the camera angles switch.

  • Continuity: In the Department of Mysteries scene, when Lucius is approaching the six students, in one shot he has his wand out, and in the next shot it's back in his cane.

  • Continuity: In the scene when Harry has to write lines for Umbridge, you clearly see him put his hand on the desk, then when the shot changes to a front view his hand is down by his side, and then when it changes back it is on the table again.

  • Continuity: While discussing the newspaper at #12 Grimmauld Place, Harry alternates between holding the newspaper and laying it flat on his plate, depending on the angle of the shot.

  • Continuity: During the scene where Harry meets Ron and Hermione at the headquarters, Hermoine's hair changes position. In the first shot Hermione's hair is behind her left shoulder, and in the next it is in front.

  • Continuity: When Harry reports to Dolores Umbridge's office for discipline, she straightens a single crookedly placed pen on her desk. Later in the scene, the pens are no longer all in alignment.

  • Continuity: During the O.W.L. examination proctored by Dolores Umbridge, the large clock pendulum in the background fails to swing with uniformity between shots.

  • Crew or equipment visible: During the first "D.A." training/meeting, harness and wires are visible as characters are thrown back after being struck by a spell.

  • Continuity: When Luna Lovegood is attacked, there is blood by her mouth. When she is held by a death eater, the blood is missing from a brief shot.

  • Continuity: The scars put on Harry's *left* hand by Umbridge's special quill keep switching hands between shots.

  • Continuity: When Harry, Hermione, Ron and Neville are in the carriage with Luna her hair is curly, yet in the next scene (what would be shortly after) her hair is completely straight.

  • Continuity: When Sirius hands Harry the photo of the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius' arm changes from the top of the bench to the seat of the bench.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Mad-Eye Moody tells Kingsley to take point as they escort Harry to headquarters, but throughout the flight Moody is in the lead. During the flight over the Thames River - just before the ferryboat - Kingsley can be seen to Harry's left. Moody should have told Kingsley to guard their flank.

  • Continuity: When Harry is asleep during his first night at Hogwarts, he is wearing a striped, light blue T-shirt. But when he has a vision of Voldemort and sits up in bed, his shirt is now solid dark blue with buttons.

  • Continuity: During the first Occlumency lesson, Snape is only wearing his frock coat, but after he uses Legillimency on Harry the second time during the lesson, he briefly appears wearing his full set of robes.

  • Continuity: In the veil room in the Department of Mysteries, when Harry tells the others to get behind him, we see Ginny stand directly behind Harry with Ron to her right. In the next shot when the Death Eaters arrive and swarm over them, Ron and Ginny have swapped positions in the formation.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the Hog's Head, Zacharias Smith says the line 'The point is, where's the proof?' While he's saying them, the camera is on Harry and you can see him mouthing 'where's the proof?'.

  • Continuity: In the exchange of presents at the Pheonix Headquarters, Mrs. Weasley is handing over two presents to Fred and George. Firstly, the red parcel is in her right hand and the green parcel is in her left. In the next shot, they are in the other hands.

  • Continuity: When Mr. & Mrs. Dursley put Dudley into the car to take him to hospital, the hanging basket near the door has mostly white flowers. Later that same evening when they prepare to take flight, they are now red, not white.

  • Continuity: In one of Harry's Occlumency lessons with Professor Snape, the window behind Harry has long vertical bars. When the camera pans out of the room, those bars are not there.

  • Continuity: In multiple shots throughout the movie you can clearly see that Harry's glasses have no lenses in them.

  • Continuity: After Hermione rings the bell on the bicycle handle, they pan to Grawp and he is now holding the bicycle handle and rings the bell. We never see Hermione give it back, or Grawp take it back.

  • Miscellaneous: When Harry and Mr. Weasley are entering the phone box which leads to the Ministry of Magic, at the end of the street several pedestrians are already crossing the road, while the traffic lights for the street are green in the beginning, and switch to red later.

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Both Pavarti and Padma Patil are shown in Umbridge's classroom wearing Gryffindor robes and scarves. Although in the books Padma is a member of Ravenclaw house, this is a minor detail and changing it for the movie is inconsequential to the series overall. In "Goblet of Fire", Padma is shown to reside in Gryffindor tower, so there is no inconsistency in this detail between films. In any case, movies do not have to follow along with every single detail in books on which they are based.

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the scene near the end when Harry and Luna are having a chat, when Luna says '...if not always in the way we expect', she is not moving her lips at all.

  • Plot holes: Twice, Sirius is referred to as "Padfoot". In the third novel, J.K. Rowling explains that Sirius and Lupin are two of the creators of the Marauder's Map (Moony and Padfoot). However, that particular subplot was cut from the movies due to pacing issues.

  • Continuity: During the hearing, when Mrs. Figg has just described the dementors, and Fudge starts talking again, there is a close-up of Harry. In this close-up, his scar is clearly missing or extremely vaguely visible.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Cho Chang is in her sixth year at Hogwarts, and would have taken her OWL exams the previous year, yet when Hermione is explaining to Ron and Harry why she is seen crying all the time, one of the reasons she gives is that Cho is afraid she'll fail her OWLs. (Although the fact that Cho is a year ahead of Harry, Ron and Hermione has never been explicitly stated in the films, it has been in the novels.)

  • Continuity: When Harry and Mr. Weasley are trying to operate the ticket turnstile Harry pulls their tickets out of his jacket pocket once. Then when the camera angle changes Harry can be seen pulling out their tickets a second time.

  • Continuity: During the final Battle in the Department of Mysteries, in the shot swooping over the battle, where Bellatrix Lestrange is heard laughing, you see Moody in the bottom right of the shot, and he is clearly dueling with two Death Eaters, but in the next shot a single Death Eater runs out of the rocks, and attacks Moody, yet Moody is not engaged with any other Death Eaters.

  • Continuity: When Harry and Mr Weasley are at the station on their way to the hearing, Harry gets the tickets out of his pocket twice.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): During Harry's trial, Fudge pronounces the name of the court as the "Wizenagamot"; the real name being the "Wizengamot".

  • Continuity: When Harry and Mr. Weasley are entering the phone box leading to The Ministry of Magic, a pedestrian is walking down the street. But when the camera is closer up to the phone box, the man has disappeared completely.

  • Continuity: When Hermione is talking to the students in the Hog's Head, she appears to struggle hard to say the name "Voldemort", as if she is as afraid of saying his name as everyone else is, yet in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, as she, Ron, and Harry sit by the fire in the Gryffindor common room one evening, she says his name without hesitation at all.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Harry sees a thestral for the first time (when they arrive at Hogwarts), he asks the others what it is. No-one of them is supposed to see anything, despite this Ron looks just for a split second to the same point as Harry is (this being the thestral's head).

  • Plot holes: When Harry goes to Umbridge's office to warn Sirius, after the twins firework 'display', we see other members of the DA being dragged into the office, one is said to have been caught "helping the Weasley girl". In the book, the fireworks where meant as a diversion to keep Umbridge away from her office so Harry could use her fireplace. However, the first part of this plot has been left out of the film, presumably while editing, so it no longer makes sense why Ginny, Neville and Luna are brought to the office.

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Harry and Mr Weasley are descending into the Ministry, using the visitors' entrance, only the inside of the phone box in the street moves. When the scene cuts to the interior of the Ministry, they're in a complete phone box. However, if you look closely you can see that there is in fact a frame moving inside the original phone box, clearly it is a double. Otherwise, guests would have been in danger of falling off.

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In Ms. Umbridge's potions lesson the camera pans out over the classroom after she has said something and there is the sound of a pencil being dropped on the floor, when students at Hogwarts only use quills. However, this could simply be a dropped wand, as this is the sound we hear when this happens elsewhere in the movie.

  • Crew or equipment visible: When Harry is first looking at the veil in the Department of Mysteries, bars of blueish light connected to either side of the arch are visible.

  • Factual errors: When Mr Weasley can't get through the gates at the Tube station Harry offers to let him use his Oyster card. Once an Oyster card is used to enter the transit system it can be used again until it is swiped at an exit gate. So the card would have let Mr. Weasley in but then Harry would not have been able to enter with the same card.

  • Plot holes: In one of the training scenes with the D.A., Luna (as well as another characters) can be heard casting the spell "Levicorpus" with the subject floating in mid-air. This spell should have been "Wingardium Leviosa", as "Levicorpus" was in Order of the Phoenix when Harry deflects Snape's "Legitimens" with a "Protego" which throws Harry into Snape's mind, where James Potter is shown to use the spell against Snape, but the words for the spell are not made known to Harry until Half-Blood Prince when Harry finds the spell in his potions book and tries it out on Ron. The "Levicorpus" spell was created by Severus Snape and was known by many students of Hogwarts at the time Severus was a student there, for example James Potter. The "Levicorpus" spell dangles the person who the spell is directed at in the air by one foot, and thus is not used in the proper context at this moment in the film.

  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When the students are writing their O.W.Ls, a sign at the front of the room states that students must use "Azul Marino Ink". "Azul Marino" is the Spanish word for "ultramarine" however, the students are clearly using black ink on their exams.
