'Tis the season for giving, it seems! Earlier today, I posted a photo on Twitter showing off the holiday gift that arrived at Splash Page HQ from the good folks at Idw Publishing, and now another package showed up in the office that merits attention.
This time around, it's an "Advanced Screening Variant" of "Siege" #1, courtesy of Marvel Comics and writer Brian Michael Bendis.
With "Siege" promising to not only be the next big event for the Marvel Universe, but also the culmination of nearly a decade of storylines, it's no surprise that Marvel is pushing the series hard — but there's something very special about this particular issue. Sure, it's signed by Bendis on the front cover, but it's the inside cover that really caught my eye. It's personalized!
Pretty great, right? I've posted more art from the issue below, including a great shot of Captain America, and a sinister-looking …

Robert Downey, Jr. cherishes working with his film producer wife Susan Downey - because he would rarely see her if she was not in the movie industry.
The couple, which has been married since 2005, has teamed up for numerous projects, including the actor's latest blockbuster, Sherlock Holmes.
The Iron Man star insists he is comfortable taking orders from his wife on set and he appreciates spending his working days with her.
He tells The Globe tabloid, "I know my place! We love working together. Making movies is so (sic) energy and time-consuming that it takes you away from your real life for big chunks of time. So I get to escape with her as opposed to from her." …

While we have seen superhero teams on screen before in X-Men and Fantastic Four, we've not yet seen several heroes crossing over from their own films into one ensemble movie.
This will happen in The Avengers, the 2012 Marvel Studios team-up movie bringing together Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and possibly Hawkeye, Edward Norton's Hulk, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and others.
Staff at Marvel Comics are excited to see how the concept of uniting all those characters will work on the big screen.
In an interview with Newsarama, several of them have given their views on the Avengers film.
Writer Brian Michael Bendis, who for five years has been the 'architect' of the Avengers comic, is part of the creative committee that consults on movies in development at Marvel Studios, including The Avengers.
He told Newsarama: …

The guys over at Collider picked up on a story yesterday that was first floated by Pajiba, regarding DC/WB possibly moving ahead with a Hawkman movie. I don’t really have all that much trust in Pajiba, but Collider’s report at least warrants us discussing the subject. Good guys over there.
Apparently, since the formation of DC Entertainment earlier this fall, the Dce/WB squad has been working hard on trying to catch up to Marvel in the super hero movie game (makes sense). This is pretty much the point of Dce – streamlining creative properties into profitable multimedia franchises – and reportedly, they are striving to make it happen, including getting some of their second-tier heroes (Hawkman) developed into Iron Man success stories.
Producers like Joel Silver and Akiva Goldman – who have been working with superhero properties for awhile – are being name-dropped as the sort of big guns who …

It was reported back in September of 2008 that Iron Man 2 was planned to be in 3D IMAX. Our own Vic Holtreman was pretty psyched about the idea, but unfortunately it didn’t work out as planned (director Jon Favreau cited budget issues as one of the reasons), and instead Iron Man 3 is being planned for the 3D IMAX experience.
However, just this September word of Iron Man 2 being in 3D surfaced again (from AICN). This time the report stated that Iron Man 2 was being converted to 3D, since it wasn’t originally filmed for it. The reason for Marvel pricking their ears up to the notion of Iron Man 2 (and Iron Man 1) being in 3D was that a one-minute clip was converted into three-dimensions and was apparently so impressive the studio looked around at three separate companies who specialize in 3D conversion.
But those who were …

Director Jon Favreau did not shoot Iron Man 2 in 3-D, but it was rumored that the movie might still be released in the format after it was revealed that a one-minute segment of the picture was converted into 3-D as a test. Now, the 3-d-centric site Market Saw is reporting that the sequel to Iron Man will not be released in 3D after all.
Got some rather bad news for S3D fans out there. I have it from a very good source (one very much in the know) that Iron Man 2 will Not be made in stereoscopic 3-D.
Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr., Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, and Scarlett Johansson.

On a recent edition of TV review show Film 2009, presenter Jonathan Ross bizarrely (and erroneously) bemoaned the lack of superhero films this year.
Well, 2008 may have had two blockbusters in the form of Iron Man and the headline-dominating entity that was The Dark Knight but this year certainly hasn't been devoid of superheroes on the screen or, more broadly, comic book movie adaptations.
We've had Watchmen and Wolverine along with a few other titles derived from lesser-known comics, not to mention several big movies that have also crossed over into the comic book realm through printed prequels and tie-ins.
So, let's take a look at this year's comic book movies - and then you get a chance to vote for the one you thought was the worst of the bunch.
First, the films whose characters and/or stories were derived from comics:
Watchmen
(Based on Alan Moore's comic series …

Ten films that didn't live up to expectations Ten Most Disappointing Films of 2009
This year I've decided I'm not going to write a "Worst of 2009" list. What's the point? If you must you can visit the review archives for 2009, sort by grade and find my reviews of Fanboys, The Last House on the Left, All About Steve and I Love You Beth Cooper and then fill in six of your choosing from the "D" section and be done with it. Instead, I'm going back to what I've done only one other time and going to take a look back at the films that ended up disappointing me on one lever or another.
This way I don't have to talk about The Marc Pease Experience or Bride Wars. Year One and Whiteout don't need further dicussion and neither does G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra of Fighting. Instead I can …

Are you a fan of DC comics' Hawkman? I don't know how much success the character has actually had. I've carried out a quick straw poll of my non-geek associates and none of them actually knew who he was and two of them thought I was talking about Condorman, the Disney movie with Michael Crawford. If Warners and DC follow through with plans for a freshly-rumored Hawkman movie that low profile will be bound to change, courtesy of multi-million dollar marketing budgets. Of course, the studios are pretty much past the immediately recognizable Spider-Man, Batman and Superman types and deep into the second-tier sorts like Iron Man, Elektra and Green Lantern and still having a certain amount of success. Hawkman is as likely to succeed, or for that matter fail, as any of them - with an attractive cast and good advance word of mouth, they could get an …

Could the death of Brittany Murphy this weekend have big implications for "Sin City 2"? While it might seem unlikely given the brief screen time of Murphy's character, Shellie, in the 2005 Robert Rodriguez film based on Frank Miller's gritty comic book series, her presence throughout many of Miller's "Sin City" tales is certainly hard to ignore.
Like many of the characters in Miller's "Sin City" stories, Shellie not only had a significant role in the story "The Big Fat Kill," but also appeared in two other narratives used in the film: "That Yellow Bastard" and "The Hard Goodbye." However, the character also appears in "A Dame To Kill For," the story which Rodriguez and various other sources have claimed will provide one of the major arcs in "Sin City 2."
In "A Dame To Kill For," Shellie plays a crucial role in setting up a brutal team-up between the …

This week, comics icon Stan Lee takes center stage in a new episode of "Marvel Super Hero Squad," the animated series featuring uber-cute versions of popular Marvel Comics characters who fight for control of the powerful "Infinity Fractals" in Superhero City and Villainville.
Lee's character in the series, The Mayor, is the elected leader of Superhero City — but his term ends when the villainous Egghead rigs the election in Saturday's episode (airing December 26).
Read on for what Lee had to say about the episode, as well as your first look at some new images from the upcoming episode of "Marvel Super Hero Squad."
"They've finally given me a little bit of authority," laughed Lee. "I'm the mayor of Superhero City and you better treat me with the proper respect."
"I actually lose the election," he revealed. "A villain named Egghead wins the election by doing a lot of illegal villainous things, …

"Sin City" actress Brittany Murphy's death at age of 32 yesterday stirred up reactions in the Twitter Report feed. Shock about her age pervaded many posts, but Kevin Smith probably stated his condolences the most eloquently.
Rob Liefeld came out of his "Avatar" screening marathon over the weekend with a new pick to play Cable on the big screen, and any X-Men movie producer sitting down with him in the near future can expect to hear the name Stephen Lang. Check out those tweets after the jump along with Jon Favreau's visit with "Iron Man 2" actor Mickey Rourke, Edgar Wright's time-travel plot and much more.
It's all in the Twitter Report for December 21, 2009.
Brittany Murphy pt 1: @ThatKevinSmith Never met her, but sad to hear about Brittany Murhpy. G'night, Ms. Murphy; hope you're rollin' with the homies someplace nice.

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath. They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman …

Hollyscoop is reporting that "sources" claim that music sensation Taylor Swift is being considered to play the lead role in a remake of 1984's box office bomb, "Supergirl."
I'll be honest, I question the validity of this rumor. No doubt, Swift certainly has what it takes to put on some tights and a cape (and it was clear from her performance as a host on SNL that the girl has great comedic timing), but I wonder if this isn't more of a casting director's wish list rather than something based in reality.
After all, "Supergirl" flopped pretty hard 25 years ago and the reboot attempt at the main "Superman" franchise really didn't take-off (no pun intended). Frankly, if Swift were to don a superhero outfit, I'd think she'd want to take part in something more dynamic like "Iron Man" rather than a franchise like "Supergirl" that isn't all that popular.
What do you think? …

Dude here again. Only two more box office reports left for 2009, can you believe it? What a crazy year it's been, from the Mall Cop to the New Moon, and everything in between. It certainly has been a roller coaster ride, full of terrible movies making far too much money, while more deserving films got swept under the rug. It's all part of this ridiculous game that gets played out every week. A game which I bet on every week in Vegas, hoping to make a fraction of the Transformers 2 gross.
To date, I haven't made a dime, mostly because I insisted on betting obscene amounts on movies like Ninja Assassin.
This weekend, James Cameron came around to change everyone's game. Did he succeed? Let's go to the numbers, shall we? (All in millions, remember, and these are the studio estimates. The actuals will be available on Monday).

The operative phrase here is "bad ass." Bad ass hero, villain (I see Mickey Rourke is still hitting the gym) and sidekick (yup, we get to see a bit of War Machine). Scarlett Johansson is looking fine as Black Widow and I can't complain about the Iron Man dancing girls. Gary Shandling as a Senator Stern (possibly named for one-time Iron Man comic scribe Roger Stern?) is a nice touch too. Watch for this one on May 7.

Ridley Scott has a gift for spectacle which is why this trailer manages to work so well with only a smidgen of voice over and no dialogue. Lots of stylish action on display for this latest adaptation of the classic tale which features Russell Crowe in the lead. The arrows start flying on May 14.
