We're seeing more and more comic books and graphic novels being adapted for the big screen and, even with varied results at the box office, the trend shows no sign of stopping.
This is largely because established titles come with a devoted fanbase while newer publications are akin to film storyboards that give studios a clear visual idea of the project.
Only recently I have twice reported on a number of comics that are being picked up by film bosses, and you can see those round-ups here and here.
I talked about the craze to comic book writer and artist Al Davison, who runs The Astral Gypsy graphic novels shop and art studio in the Canal Basin here in Coventry.

Stan Lee may be done with his "Iron Man 2" cameo, but "Thor" still awaits. He tweeted about his high expectations last night, including what it will take to get him to Asgard.
Meanwhile at the Marvel offices in New York, editor Axel Alonso posted a behind-the-scenes look at what you can expect to see in a bathroom there. After the jump, there's also Dennis Calero's design obervation about James Cameron's "Avatar," Edgar Wright's early memories of "Labyrinth" and Tony Harris on wrapping up "Ex Machina."
It's all in the Twitter Report for November 12, 2009.
@smilinstanlee Since many have asked, my Iron Man cameo is done and I'm waiting to do Thor. But I'n not goin' to Asgard unless they fly me first class!

Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated “Thor” adaptation is finally set to go before the cameras in January.
Principal photography will begin in Los Angeles before moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in March according to a report from Production Weekly.
“Thor” has rapidly gained a higher profile among movie fans thanks to a stellar cast including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as his evil half-brother, Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and Stellan Skarsgard have also been cast in presently unspecified roles.
The story reportedly finds Thor cast down from Asgard –the land of Nordic Gods– and forced to rediscover what it means to be a hero by living among humanity and protecting the Earth against the darkest hordes of Asgard’s greatest enemies.
Popular Marvel Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis has been effusive in his praise for director Kenneth Branagh’s take on “Thor. »

Can Jon Favreau's reality-based "Iron Man" share the same universe as Kenneth Branagh's fantasy-focused "Thor"? What about the space-faring "Green Lantern" film and Christopher Nolan's gritty take on Batman?
These are valid concerns both for fans and movie executives as Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment plan live-action adaptations of "The Avengers" and "Justice League," respectively.
While they're difficult questions to tackle, some hint at the answers could lie in an installment of the television series "Smallville" (titled "Hex") which debuted last season. In "Hex," the powerful magician Zatanna interacts not only with the super-powerful Clark Kent, but also with Green Arrow, a street-level vigilante with no superpowers to speak of.
MTV News spoke with "Hex" writer Bryan Q. Miller (the new writer of DC's "Batgirl" series) to get his take on how to integrate magically-gifted characters into a live-action comic book world.

It’s been a bit of a trek for the Norse god, but according to Production Weekly it looks like Thor will finally begin shooting mid-January in Los Angeles and then move to Santa Fe from March through late-April. That’s a four-month shoot (assuming that the production doesn’t move to a third location following their work in New Mexico), but keep in mind that Thor will have an intensive post-production as they complete all the special effects. Even if they’re shooting past April, they’ll definitely have something to show if Marvel brings the flick to next year’s San Diego Comic-Con (and I can’t think of a reason why they wouldn’t). Hit the jump if you need a refresher on the plot and the cast.
For those just tuning in, Thor is based off the popular Marvel comic. The movie follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth »

From Splash Page: It's no secret that many creators in and around the comics scene have embraced Twitter these days—and many of them make regular appearances in our daily Twitter Report. Perhaps one of the most surprising creators with a regular presence in the Twitterverse, however, is one of the industry's most beloved icons: Stan Lee.
The co-creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, the X-Men and countless other popular characters, the 86-year-old Lee has taken to Twitter with surprising ease. A typical 24 hours with @SmilinStanLee offers readers a host of witty observations, tongue-in-cheek commentary and self-deprecating humor that reveals why Stan "The Man" Lee is one of comics' living legends.
I spoke with Lee about his arrival on the Twitter scene, why he's taken to the microblogging tool so easily, and why communicating with fans on Twitter actually has him feeling like he's gone back in time.

A busy man after the success of Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is currently shooting the comedy Due Date. He has plenty of upcoming projects, including a "re-imagining" of Harvey and the comic book adaptation of Cowboys and Aliens, not to mention Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man 2 awaiting theatrical release.
Yet, Downey Jr. told Esquire magazine that what he really wants for his next project is to direct.
I will not be able to remain happy and sedate being whatever — being an increasingly hirable actor type. I think the best thing I could do for my soul and my own development would be to direct.
I'm not sure exactly how things are going to shake out, because it's really easy for me to do landgrabs with my day job, and I still have a lot of passion for it. But if I had to guess, that would probably be my next move. »

As the Squad's resident alien, the Surfer is a fish-out-of-water, constantly puzzled and amazed at the strange customs and culture of Earthlings. The Surfer, for all his innocence, is in hiding. Even as he learns more about this pleasant oasis called Earth, taking in its mountains, rivers and beaches (where he’ll be a sensation among the surfer dudes) he’s worried that his presence may draw his former master, that world-devouring barrel of laughs called Galactus, into the fray, and possibly get the Earth eaten. [jambovideo id="159123" /] The Surfer and the other Squaddies The other teammates respect him, but don't even pretend to understand him. While Iron Man tries to fathom the mysteries of the Surfer's powerful surfboard, Falcon has taken it upon himself to educate the alien in the ways of Earthlings. The Surfer stays on Earth because he finds a sense of belonging and higher moral purpose with the team. »

We want to bring you more news every day, but unfortunately our robot army of writers who never need to sleep, to eat, or to love, is still under development (currently all they do is sleep, eat, and love). In the meantime, we’re going to be making “A Fistful of News” a regular feature you’ll see every other day where we bring you some additional news stories we found but didn’t have time to write. Until the Robot Army is ready to proceed (which is unlikely as we cut corners and ordered them from Belize, a country not known for quality robotics).
After the jump you’ll find ten quick news items including what’s next for Up director Peter Docter even though it’s not Monsters, Inc. 2, Guillermo del Toro’s monster cameo in The Hobbit, and Jeff Bridges’ behind-the-scenes photography on the set of Iron Man. »

Pictured: The winner of Cinematical's Fourth Annual Halloween Costume Contest
Our Fifth Annual Halloween Costume Contest saw a record number of submissions, with literally hundreds of freaky movie-inspired Halloween costumes for our crack team of judges to sift through. Naturally it took forever to choose 20 finalists (10 in the adult category and 10 in the child category), but after hours of tireless deliberations we finally narrowed down the list and came away with what I believe to be the cream of the crop. Before we ask you to vote for the winning costumes, I'd personally like to thank all of you out there for dressing up and playing along. Though it's a giant task each year, it's one I always welcome with open arms because nothing puts a bigger smile on my face then to sift through photos of you all getting your movie geek on.

An article in the New York Times has caused quite a stir today in the movie community after it claimed a $500 million budget for James Cameron’s 3-D film, Avatar.
Michael Cieply’s report wonders if Fox can turn a profit from a production that costs half a billion, a total that includes everything from paying the special effects wizards to TV spots on Nickelodeon. The studio claims the costs of making the actual movie are around $230 million, possibly a low-ball number (like most studio budget estimates) but still under the roughly $267 million spent on 1997’s Titanic after an adjustment for inflation.
Cieply writes Fox will likely spend somewhere around $150 million to market Avatar globally, but how does that suddenly add up to 500? It continues to say $250M in domestic ticket sales would mean Fox was in the black, a seemingly arbitrary number even when you figure in outside investors. »

When "Twilight" cast members began tweeting about subjects involving missing clothing, I definitely did not expect to log on to Twitter today and find out that Christian Serratos decided to outdo all of them, but but her new garment-less PETA ad definitely succeeded.
Dane Cook and Ice-t, meanwhile, were less focused on saving fur and more intent on playing "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" this weekend, according to their posts, and at least one of them found himself in possession of some nightvision goggles. Check all of that out after the jump along with Danny Masterson's criticism for Andre Agassi, "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich's favorite childhood toy and much more.
