'Sin City' Producer Bringing 'Almighty' To The Big Screen

5 November 2009 6:58 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Ed Laroche’s graphic novel “Almighty” has been optioned by “Sin City” producer Stephen L'Heureux’s Solipsist Films.

According to Mania, “Black Hawk Down” screenwriter Ken Nolan is also attached to adapt the script and “Almighty” is already being shown to potential directors.

Created, written and drawn by Laroche, “Almighty” takes place in 2098 and follows Fale, a female mercenary who is hired to rescue a girl from kidnappers and bring her home safely across the dangerous terrain of a "third world America" that has descended into neo-tribalism.

According to Laroche, Fale is a departure from the standard female action hero—embodied in recent years by Kate Beckinsale’s Selene from the “Underworld” film series and numerous Milla Jovovich movies like “Resident Evil” and “Ultraviolet.”

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

I initially hadn't felt any interest for F. Gary Gray's Law Abiding Citizen, the director having ruined for me what great a sequel Be Cool could've been and star Gerard Butler looking like he's taken the easy paycheck route since 300. But having seen the trailer recently I have to say it looks nothing like the borefest I was expecting, And that darn thing's written by Kurt Wimmer; Ultraviolet's bad reviews aside, the dude's Equilibrium still kicks... »

Law Abiding Citizen Trailer Starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler

14 August 2009 6:23 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The first trailer for the upcoming thriller Law Abiding Citizen has hit the web this week, and while the concept is a little bit out there, I'm sure it's one that will hook a lot of people. Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a man whose wife and daughter are murdered, while Jamie Foxx plays the prosecutor who lets his family's killer walk. Unfortunately for Foxx, Shelton is not as ordinary as he might seem, and he decides to exact his own brand of justice on those responsible. The movie reminds me a little bit of Dexter meets Taken, and I have a feeling a lot will ride on the believability of the script, which is written by Kurt Wimmer who wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, and also wrote The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit and Street Kings. The movie is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Negotiator, The Italian Job »

'Law Abiding Citizen' gets intense trailer

13 August 2009 3:09 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Here's quite the entertaining trailer for F. Gary Gray's upcoming thriller "Law Abiding Citizen," in which Gerard Butler goes really nuts. Check out the vibrant preview after the jump.

After finding out that one of his wife and daughter’s murderers will be set free via a plea bargain, Butler’s character decides to take revenge against those responsible for the murders and the deal.

Jamie Foxx plays successful assistant D.A. pulled into the middle of the mayhem. Butler's revenge will be explosive, and as you can see in this footage below, he's stopping at nothing to put into place his own system of justice.

F. Gary Gray ("The Italian Job") is directing a script by Kurt Wimmer, whose credits also include "Ultraviolet" and "Equilibrium." Michael Gambon, Viola Davis and Regina Hall co-star. "Citizen" hits Oct. 16, 2009. »

Exclusive: Milla Jovovich, Escaping from the Norm

6 August 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

We clearly saved the best for last with ShockTillYouDrop's interviews for David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway , since actress Milla Jovovich is certainly a fan favorite of genre lovers from her memorable appearances in Luc Besson's The Fifth Element , Ultraviolet and of course, the "Resident Evil" trilogy, which she'll be returning to next month. Her role in A Perfect Getaway is slightly more subdued, as she plays Cydney, the new wife of a screenwriter played by Steve Zahn, the two of them on their honeymoon in Hawaii where they meet a couple of survivalists, played by Timothy Olyphant and Kielle Sanchez, who may or may not be responsible for a series of brutal murders they hear about on the news. On the day of our interview, the lovely Ms. Jovovich was wearing... »

American Thoughts On The British Film Industry

Kevin Coll is a Memphis based marketing guru and Editor in Chief of Memphis-based film news site Fused Film.

So when Craig asked me to do a guest post on FilmShaft about American thoughts on the British film industry, how could I resist? First off let me start by saying that I speak on my own behalf and not the rest of America. I say this because if what I say is misconstrued or taken out of context to be offensive I do not want the rest of America to suffer!

So where to start? How about the tradition of great British actors who have come to be household names in American cinema? Perhaps the most recognizable of names for me is Peter O’Toole who is in my favorite movie of all time, “Lawrence of Arabia” (and mine in “High Spirits – Craig). One of the biggest problems I have about Hollywood, »

Movie gossip: Total Recall, Predators, Beastly

5 June 2009 11:45 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Kurt Wimmer, the writer and director of Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, has been hired to write the screenplay for Columbia's remake of Total Recall.

The story, based on the Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, follows a man haunted by a dream of travelling to Mars. After a virtual reality vacation stirs up hidden memories of a past life as a secret agent, he travels to Mars to uncover the truth.

The 1990 original starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role of Douglas Quaid.

The star - and California governor - who has a well-publicised 'surprise' cameo in current release Terminator Salvation, has reportedly been offered a small part in the upcoming Predators, according to Moviehole.

The site says the project's producer Robert Rodriguez has "reached out" to Arnie to ask him to reprise his role of Major Alan 'Dutch' Schaefer from the original 1987 Predator flick.

Kurt Wimmer Hired to Write the Total Recall Remake

3 June 2009 11:35 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

When we announced back in February that Total Recall was being rebooted, no writer or directed was attached yet. However, Columbia has now hired Kurt Wimmer to write the remake. Wimmer previously wrote Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit, and Street Kings, and both wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. Producer Neal Moritz is developing this remake as a contemporary adaptation of the movie based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." Columbia secured remake rights from Miramax, which has the option to co-finance the project when it's ready to shoot. There's nothing really in Wimmer's filmography that makes me feel confident that it's him who is writing this. Sure, Equilibrium is a fun movie, but the writing wasn't that great. The original Total Recall was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who is responsible for a lot of the crazy visuals in it. I'm »

Total Recall Remake Gets ‘Ultraviolet’ Screenwriter

3 June 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kurt Wimmer, writer/director of sci-fi action films Equilibrium and Ultraviolet has been tapped by Columbia pictures to pen the upcoming remake of Total Recall.

Wimmer will be trying to write a “contemporized adaptation” of “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”, the Philip K. Dick story that inspired the original Total Recall, which was directed by Paul Verhoeven (The Surrogate) and starred “Governator” Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It seems crazy to me that some of you reading this are too young to have seen (or cared at all about) the original Total Recall. Here’s a quick rundown of the story for the uninitiated:

In the future, a restless construction worker named Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger in the original) pays “Rekall Inc.”, a company specializing in implanted memories, to implant him with a fictional memory of an epic adventure he had on Mars as a secret agent. »

Kurt Wimmer, has been tapped to write Columbia's new version of "Total Recall," which Neal H Moritz is developing and producing through his Original Films banner. The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air. The studio is keeping the new story details a secret, simply calling a "contemporized adaptation." Wimmer has previously written "The Thomas Crown Affair," "Equilibrium", "The Recruit," "Ultraviolet" and "Street Kings." He is also hard at work on the Gerard Butler's "Law Abiding Citizen" and Angelina Jolie's "Salt." »

Total Recall remake edges closer to reality

3 June 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

Ahh, the memories. Let’s take a trip down memory lane (pun intended) via IMDb for some classic Arnie quotes in “Total Recall”:

Quaid: If I am not me, den who da hell am I?

Lori: Doug. Honey… you wouldn’t hurt me, would you, sweet heart? Sweet heart, be reasonable. After all, we’re married!

Lori goes for her gun, Quaid shoots her.

Quaid: Consider dat a divorce.

Quaid: What about da guy you lobotomized? Did he gedda refund?

Quaid enters a Johnnycab to escape from killers

Johnnycab: Please state the street and number.

Quaid: Shit, shit!

Johnnycab: I’m not familiar with that address. Would you please repeat the destination?

Quaid rips Johnnycab from the floor, and throws him in the back.

Quaid wakes up in a Johnnycab

Quaid: Where am I?

Johnnycab: You’re in a Johnnycab.

Quaid: I mean, what am I doing here?

Johnnycab: I’m sorry. »

Total Recall Remake Gets a Writer with Geek Cred

3 June 2009 9:27 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

If you're like me, you're probably wondering why there is a Total Recall remake in development at all right now, but alas, this is the world we live in. Producer Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious) has his work cut out for him if he expects to find a way to improve upon the original, and somehow make people forget about the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the style of director Paul Verhoeven. According to Variety [1], the project has just landed a writer in the form of Kurt Wimmer, who previously wrote and directed the films Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. He also wrote screenplays for Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit, and more recently, Salt starring Angelina Jolie. So this is the part where everyone debates whether Equilibrium was actually any good. To me, it is easily the best thing Wimmer has done so far, but also heavily flawed and a bit ham-fisted. »

And Here Comes the 'Total Recall' Remake

3 June 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Go ahead and get that "Aarghhh!!!!" out of your system now. You'll feel better. (I have done so as well.) The remake that our own Eugene Novikov refused to believe a few short months ago is now moving forward. Total Recall will receive a "contemporized adaptation," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Kurt Wimmer has been hired to write the script, which may or may not be based on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale," the Philip K. Dick story that inspired the original.

THR notes Wimmer's recent scripts for the upcoming thrillers Law Abiding Citizen and Salt, but the more pertinent credits are the ones he earned as writer / director of Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, which provided action thrills in science-fictional settings. If you harbor any hopes for this project, you can only dream that Wimmer can come up with something more closely resembling Equilibrium, a trashy yet entirely entertaining little surprise, »

‘Total Recall’ Remake Totally Has A New Writer

3 June 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Why Columbia, why? Director Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi classic “Total Recall” doesn’t really scream for a remake, but that’s exactly what we’re getting. It’s old news, I know. That doesn’t mean I’ve accepted it though.

Now Kurt Wimmer has been tapped to deliver a script, according to a report in Variety. Wimmer is no stranger to sci-fi, having previously written “Equilibrium,” “Ultraviolet” and “Sphere.” Not exactly the most inspiring resumè, I know, but at least “Sphere” and “Equilibrium” — the two out of those I’ve seen — contain some interesting ideas. The heavily “Matrix”-inspired “Equilibrium” boasts some impressive action, including a standout pistol whipping fight scene. And yes, that is Christian Bale.

Both the original “Total Recall” and the coming remake are based on Philip K. Dick’s story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” though Variety describes the new version as a “contemporized adaptation. »
