Sheen Set For Marriage In May
7 May 2008 (WENN)
Charlie Sheen is to wed fiancee Brooke Mueller at the end of the month. The couple has told U.S. magazine In Touch exclusively that the nuptials will take place on May 30. Sheen and Mueller met at a party in early 2006, just after Sheen had separated from his then-wife, Denise Richards. The Two And A Half Men actor proposed to the real estate agent-turned TV personality last summer. This will be Sheen's third marriage and Mueller's first.

CBS Comedy and Drama Shows Cross Over
6 May 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Although many viewers might conclude that CBS's comedy Two and a Half Men and its drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation have little, if anything in common, the writers of each show have teamed up to create two cross-over episodes in which the characters of one appear on the other. The first episode aired Monday night on Two and a Half Men in which a body was found lying on Charlie Sheen's bed. The CSI investigators arrived on the scene and on Thursday's episode (titled "Two and a Half Deaths") solve the crime. The Two and a Half Men episode gave ABC's indomitable Dancing With the Stars some strong competition Monday as it scored a solid 8.5 rating and a 13 share against the final half hour of Dancing, which drew a 12.3/18.

Sheen Accused Of Using Escort Service
1 May 2008 (WENN)
Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen has been accused of regularly using a high-profile escort service. The Two And A Half Men star reportedly answered a newspaper advertisement for Nici's Girls which charges customers $25,000 per night - and placed an order for four escorts. The 42-year-old - who was accused by ex-wife Denise Richards of having an unhealthy love for prostitutes and Internet porn - reportedly paid agency owner Nici $20,000 for their services. Nici made the revelations to Rolling Stone magazine journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis. The reporter tells New York Post's PageSix.com, "When Nici dropped four girls off at his penthouse, she found the actor in silk pajamas with 'C. MaSheen' embroidered over the pocket. Sheen gave her a $20,000 check for the girls, and she picked them up several hours later." Despite entering court-ordered rehab for substance abuse, Nici "continued to book girls for him, furtively sending them to a doctor's office in Los Angeles owned by a friend of Sheen's. The orderlies at the rehab centre would let him out for his frequent medical appointments." Nici told Grigoriadis she continued to send girls for Sheen at a hotel in Santa Monica, California until last year. Sheen became engaged to fiancee Brooke Mueller in July. In response to the allegations, Sheen's publicist Stan Rosenfield tells PageSix.som, "This is an old, old, old story. But, if you're looking for a really good story, I heard that Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe are getting a divorce."

Falling 'Idol'?
23 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
With ratings for last week's performance edition of American Idol falling to a five-year-low and its results edition to a four-year low, Fox barely managed to retain its ratings crown last week. The network averaged 8.8 million viewers for the week, just 300,000 more than CBS. Nevertheless, the two Idol telecasts remained at the top of the heap last week. Somewhat surprisingly, CBS's NCIS became the network's highest-rated show for the week, drawing 15.1 million viewers, despite the fact that it went head-to-head against Fox's Idol.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 13.9/22; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 13.4/21; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.3/17; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.1/15; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.1/16; 6. NCIS, CBS, 9.4/15; 7. Law and Order: SVU, NBC, 8.8/14; 8. CSI: NY, CBS, 8.6/14; 9. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.5/13; 10. Criminal Minds, CBS, 8.2/13.

With All-New Episodes, CBS Rises to the Top Again
9 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Even with its Tuesday and Wednesday editions of American Idol averaging more than 25 million viewers, Fox was unable to walk away with another weekly victory in the ratings. Rising out of the ashes of the recent writers' strike, CBS came roaring back with a new episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on Thursday drawing 20.6 million viewers. In fact, six of the top ten shows of the week aired on CBS. The four exceptions: the two Idol episodes and two editions of ABC's Dancing With the Stars.CBS averaged a 7.2 rating and a 12 share for the week, well ahead of Fox, which scored a 5.9/10. ABC finished third with a 4.9/8, while NBC trailed with a 4.2/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 14.8/22; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.7/23; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.0/20; 4. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 12.4/20; 5. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.1/17; 6. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.1/16; 7. Without a Trace, CBS, 9.7/17; 8. CSI: Miami (Tuesday), CBS, 9.1/15; 9. NCAA Basketball Championships (Saturday), CBS, 8.8/16; 9. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.8/13.

'Idol' and 'Dancing' Repeat
2 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Ratings results last week looked pretty much like they did the week before, with Fox's American Idol claiming the first two spots in the Nielsen top ten and ABC's Dancing With the Stars taking the next two spots. In fact, their margin of victory appeared so great that it appeared likely that they would continue to claim those rankings while both of them remained on the air this season. Only two scripted shows finished in the top ten, CBS's CSI: Miami, which finished fifth, and CBS's Two and a Half Men, which finished eighth. Overall, CBS won the week with a 6.1 rating and a 10 share. Fox followed close behind with a 5.9/10. ABC placed third with a 5.7/9, while NBC trailed with a 5.1/8. Meanwhile, on cable, Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards telecast reportedly averaged 7.4 million viewers on Saturday, making it the most-watched show on cable for the week. It was also the top program on all of television for children.

April Madness?
1 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
With all No. 1 seeds making it to the Final Four in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, CBS is hoping that ratings for March Madness will be given a significant lift in April. They are down an average of 7 percent from the same number of games a year ago. In a conference call on Monday, CBS Sports officials blamed the number of "blowout" games that appeared settled long before the end of the broadcasts for the audience erosion -- something that is not expected to happen with the top teams vying for the championship. Meanwhile, without basketball Monday night, CBS scored strongly with its old stalwarts Two and a Half Men, which drew an 8.7 rating and a 13 share, and CSI: Miami, which posted a 10.1/17. The New Adventures of Old Christine also had one of its best nights, drawing an 8.1/12. But a 90-minute edition of ABC's Dancing With the Stars wiped out all the competition as it averaged a 12.9/20. In the end, ABC drew the most viewers overall for the night; CBS drew the most viewers among adults 18-49.

So How Would a Song and Dance Contest Do?
26 March 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Two episodes of Fox's American Idol followed by two episodes of ABC's Dancing With the Stars topped last week's Nielsen ratings. Once again, the week was won by Fox, which averaged a 6.0/10, but ABC was close behind, averaging a 5.8/10. CBS's numbers continued to slip as it placed third with a 5.5/9, and NBC came in a distant fourth with a 4.8/8 and would have lagged even further behind had it not been for old standby Law and Order and game show Deal or No Deal.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 15.3/24; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 15.2/23; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.3/21; 4. Lost, ABC, 7.0/11; 9. (Tie) The Moment of Truth, Fox, 7.0/11.

Fox Takes Lead As Season's No. 1 Network
19 March 2008 (StudioBriefing)
During a week in which Fox Broadcasting took over the lead from CBS to become the most-watched network of the season, the show that put it there, American Idol, drew more viewers than all its competition combined. Tuesday's "performance" edition drew 29.88 million viewers, while Wednesday's "results" show was not far behind with 27.13 million. It was a different tale with Fox's Canterbury's Law, which drew 7.72 million in its premiere on Monday night and the debut of Friday night's The Return of Jezebel James was shot down with only 3.18 million viewers. For the week, Fox averaged a 6.8 rating and an 11 share, representing 11.3 million viewers. CBS and NBC tied for second place with a 5.0/8, while ABC trailed with a 4.0/7. Meanwhile, veteran media journalist Alex Ben Block, in his online Hollywood Today report, noted that all of the major broadcast networks continue to lose viewers. Citing a report prepared for ad agency Rubin Postaer, Block noted that network viewership is down as much as 12 percent since September, with only ABC showing improvement over last year. The report blames the writers' strike, changes in the way Nielsen measures audiences, a glut of reality shows and the failure of network TV to produce a single breakout hit this season.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 16.9/26; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 15.8/24; 3. Law and Order, NBC, 7.9/13; 3. Survivor: Micronesia, CBS, 7.9/13; 5. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 7.6/12; 6. Lost, ABC, 7.5/12; 7. Deal or No Deal (Monday), NBC, 7.4/11; 8. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.3/13; 8. Sheen Asks Fans To Boycott Richards' Reality Show
29 February 2008 (WENN)
Charlie Sheen is urging television viewers to boycott his ex-wife Denise Richards' new reality show. The actor is furious his two young daughters with the actress - Sam, three, and Lola, two - will appear in the program, after a judge rejected his attempt to block it. And now the Two And A Half Men star is encouraging fans to avoid the show, which is due to air later this year. He tells U.S. magazine OK!, "I think we should all just boycott the damn thing. You don't go to court and make a stand to prevent that if you don't firmly believe in it. It's just the situation where the world is upside down sometimes."

'Idol': More Golden Than Oscar
27 February 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Although ABC had the Oscars last week, Fox had three nights -- count 'em, three nights -- of American Idol, and that's all it took to come out on top of the Nielsen ratings for the final full week of the February sweeps. Moreover, the Oscars telecast was the lowest rated since Nielsen began keeping track in 1974. (The low ratings also affected those for ABC's Good Morning America. GMA often beats NBC's Today show the day after the Oscars simply because millions of people leave their TV sets tuned to the ABC channel when they go to bed.) Fox wound up the week with an average 8.6 rating and a 14 share. ABC placed second with a 6.1/10. CBS came in third with a 5.1/8, while NBC trailed with a 4.6/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. 80th Annual Academy Awards, ABC, 18.7/29; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 16.4/25; 3. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 16.1/24; 4. American Idol (Thursday), Fox, 13.4/21; 5. Oscar's Red Carpet 2008, ABC, 13.3/21; 6. Deal or No Deal, (Monday), NBC, 10.0/15; 7. Without a Trace, CBS, 8.0/13; 8. Barbara Walters Oscars Special, ABC, 7.7/13; 8. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 7.7/12; 8. Lost, ABC, 7.7/12; 8. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 7.7/12.

Writers Facing Harsh Reality
21 February 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Last week's ratings results could not have lifted the spirits of Writers Guild of America members. Of the top ten shows only three were scripted. ABC's Lost placed highest on the list -- tied, with two other shows four fourth place. CBS's Two and a Half Men came in at No. 8 and the network's NCIS tied for tenth. Once again, Fox's American Idol blew away the competition, with the Tuesday performance edition capturing first place with a 16.6 rating and a 25 share. Not quite making the top ten was NBC's 2-hour "backdoor pilot" of Knight Rider, which tied for twelfth. Overall, Fox came out on top for the week with an average 6.7 rating and an 11 share. NBC finished second with a 5.5/9, barely edging out CBS with a 5.2/8. ABC trailed with a 4.4/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 16.6/25; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 14.3/22; 3. The Moment of Truth, Fox, 8.4/13; 4. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.1/14; 4. (tie) Deal or No Deal, (Monday), NBC, 8.1/13; 4. (tie) Lost, ABC, 8.1/13; 7. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ABC, 7.8/12; 8. Quick Restarts for CBS Sitcoms
14 February 2008 (StudioBriefing)
The cast and crew of How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men got word Wednesday that they were all blessed with the luck of the Irish -- that their shows will be the first to return to the CBS schedule with new episodes beginning March 17, St. Patrick's Day. The network also said that it plans to air new episodes of CSI: Miami and Cold Case on March 24 and March 30 respectively and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, Without a Trace, Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs in early April. NBC also announced some post-strike returnees but indicated that they would not air until April. My Name Is Earl, it said, will be the first back on April 3, to be followed by the rest of the Thursday-night lineup a week later. Meanwhile, analysts indicated that the strike had little effect on the balance sheets of the networks. "They've escaped pretty much unscathed," David Bank, entertainment analyst at ABC Capital, told MarketWatch.com, noting that ad rates at the network have remained strong despite the strike and despite the economic downturn. (At Fox they're up by double digits.)

90-Minute 'Deal' Tops Monday
12 February 2008 (StudioBriefing)
The usual Monday-night winners, Deal or No Deal on NBC and Two and a Half Men on CBS, continued to trounce the competition in their latest outing. An hour and a half of Deal averaged an 8.5 rating and a 13 share, while a repeat of Men recorded an 8.1/12. By contrast, the battle between reality shows Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann on ABC and American Gladiators on NBC fell far behind in the ratings, with War garnering a 6.4/9 and Gladiators, only a 5.1/8. CBS's new sitcom Welcome to the Captain was turned away in the 8:00 p.m. hour, drawing a fourth-place 4.6/7 in its second week.

Judge Gives Richards Green Light for Reality TV Show
24 January 2008 (WENN)
Charlie Sheen has lost a bid to prevent his ex-wife Denise Richards from including their two daughters in a new reality TV show, after a Los Angeles judge ruled in the actress' favor. The Two And A Half Men actor is objecting to letting the former couple's girls, three-year-old Sam and two-year-old Lola, take part in the ex-Bond girl's TV plans. But after a closed hearing at Los Angeles family court on Tuesday, Commissioner Harvey A. Silberman ruled Richards was allowed to include the kids in the program, subject to a number of rules. The details of which have yet to be released. Richards was represented in court by her attorney, who participated via telephone, while Sheen attended the hearing with his lawyer. The TV show will reportedly revolve around Richards' life as a working single mum in Hollywood.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.5/16; 2. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 8.7/14; 3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.4//18; 4. NCIS, CBS, 8.2/14; 5. (Tie) Without a Trace, CBS, 7.2/14.

ABC Wins November Sweeps Week
5 December 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC unseated CBS from its usual throne as the most-watched network last week. Among the key demographic group of adults 18-49, it held down all five of the top positions on the Nielsen ratings list. It was the best performance with regular programming by the network in more than a year. The top two shows among younger viewers were the season's final broadcasts of Dancing With the Stars, followed by the half-hour animated special Shrek the Halls. Sunday's Desperate Housewives came in fourth, while the classic holiday special How the Grinch Stole Christmas landed in fifth place. Overall, ABC averaged a 7.7 rating and a 12 share for the week. CBS placed second with a 6.8/11. NBC and Fox tied for third with a 5.2/8.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 16.1/24; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 15.7/23; 3. Effects of Strike To Hit Soon
8 November 2007 (StudioBriefing)
More reality and news magazine shows are likely to show up on network TV schedules sooner than expected as production companies announced Wednesday they were shutting down not only because of a dearth of fresh scripts but also because key talent and crew members were refusing to cross picket lines. The Associated Press reported today (Thursday) that filming stopped on NBC's The Office because star Steve Carell refused to cross the picket line. Julia Louis-Dreyfus told the wire service that production had also stopped on her CBS show, The New Adventures of Old Christine. A.P. said production on the following shows was also halting: Til Death, Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, and Back to You. Meanwhile, Fox announced Wednesday that rather than air a shortened version of its 24 series, it would not air the drama at all this season and hold already-completed episodes until next season. However, during a conference call to discuss the company's quarterly earnings, Peter Chernin, president and COO of Fox's corporate parent, News Corp, said that "a strike is probably a positive for the company." He noted that Fox airs more non-scripted and primetime animated shows than its competitors -- shows that are unaffected by the strike. "We would expect if anything that it would lift our market share and have us win this season by an even greater margin than we expect to," Chernin said.

'Dancing' Light on Its Feet; Other Shows Stumble
9 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC's Dancing With the Stars continued to dominate on Monday night, averaging a 12.8 rating and a 19 share between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Many of the shows on other networks, however, saw significant ratings erosion. CBS's Two and a Half Men at 9:00 p.m. dropped to an 8.4/12, down 24 percent from the comparable Monday a year ago. Likewise, the network's CSI: Miami was down 18 percent to a 10.1/16. NBC's new comedy Chuck saw its ratings decline to a 4.9/7 following its debut two weeks earlier with a 6.4/10. The network's new Journeyman dropped to a 4.8/7, a 29-percent plunge from its opening week.

So Long, Summer
26 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Although a few early premieres punctuated the period, last week nevertheless was officially regarded as the last week of the summer season -- and looked it. Most shows continued to draw relatively tiny audiences, and no new series broke into the top ten. NBC's Sunday Night Football, this week featuring the Dallas Cowboys against the Chicago Bears, continued to lead the Nielsen ratings list (13.3 million viewers), followed by CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which usually leads when the football season ends in January. Fox also got a boost on Sunday from an overrun of its NFL game in the 7:00 p.m. hour. But college football on Saturday night drew only 4.9 million viewers for ABC. CBS was the overall household winner for the week with a 5.8 rating and a 10 share. NBC placed second with a 5.0/8. Fox took the third spot with a 4.7/8, while ABC trailed with a 3.8/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Sunday Night Football, NBC, 11.8/19; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 9.1/15; 3. Survivor: China, CBS, 9.0/15; 4. Sunday Night NFL Pregame, NBC, 8.7/15; 5. Cold Case, CBS, 8.2/12; 6. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.6/13; 6. Shark, CBS, 7.6/13; 6. Without a Trace, CBS, 7.6/13; 9. Deal or No Deal (Monday), NBC, 7.5/12; 10. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.9/11.

NFL Crushes Emmy
19 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
In past years, a gentlemen's agreement by the networks removed heavy competition from whichever network was airing the Emmy awards. The result was that the awards ceremony was generally one of the highest-rated shows of the year. Not so these days as the Emmy telecast was forced to compete Sunday against an overrun of a CBS NFL telecast and later NBC's Sunday Night Football -- and was thrown for its biggest loss since 1990. Final weekly ratings figures from Nielsen Research showed that Sunday night's telecast drew 13 million viewers, down significantly from last year when it drew 16.1 million. Last year's telecast had already been designated the second-lowest-rated Emmy affair in history. In fact, Sunday's show beat the 1990 telecast by just 700,000 viewers. (Some analysts pointed out that the earlier telecast aired less than four years after Fox went on the air and that the network had far fewer affiliates then than it does today.)

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 9.8/16; 2. 59th Primetime Emmy Awards, Fox, 8.4/14; 3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.6/12; 4. Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kickoff, NBC, 7.2/12; 5. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.6/12; 6. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.4/10; 7. CSI: NY, CBS, 5.9/10; 8. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 5.8/10; 9. Big Brother (Thursday), CBS, 5.7/10; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 5.6/9; 10. Football Night in America, NBC, 5.6/10.

NBC Kicks Off Season at No. 1
12 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
What a difference football makes for NBC's standing in the ratings. Two NFL games last week, on Thursday and Sunday, pushed the network to the top of the ratings list with an average 5.4 rating and a 9 share. Nevertheless, both games attracted significantly smaller audiences than the first games of last season did. CBS, the usual weekly winner, came in second with an average 4.6/8. Fox and ABC tied for third, each with a 3.6/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Sunday Night Football, NBC, 11.6/17; 2. NFL Thursday Special, NBC, 11.5/17; 3. NFL Thursday Pre-Kick-Off, NBC, 8.8/15; 4. Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kickoff, NBC, 8.0/15; 5. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.1/12; 6. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.8/12; 7. The OT (postgame), Fox, 6.6/12; 8. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.5/11; 9. Football Night in America, Pt 3, NBC, 5.9/10; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 5.8/10; 10. NFL Opening Kick-Off Show, 5.8/10; 10. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 5.8/9.

Peacock Takes Swan Dive
6 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Last week, the average ratings for NBC programs sank to their lowest level since Nielsen's current method for determining audience size was instituted some 20 years ago. The network averaged just 4.17 million viewers per hour in primetime. Ratings among adults 18-49 also fell to a record low for the network. (Fox also recorded record lows in that demographic group last week, while ABC tied its previous record low.) CBS led its rivals with an average 4.5 rating and an 8 share for the week. ABC placed second with a 2.9/5, while Fox and NBC tied with a 2.8/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.6/11; 2. Power of 10 (Tuesday), CBS, 6.4/11; 3. CSI: Miami, CBS, 6.1/10; 4. CSI: NY, CBS, 6.0/11; 5. Criminal Minds, CBS, 5.8/10; 6. Power of Ten (Wednesday), CBS, 5.4/10; 7. Big Brother 8 (Tuesday), CBS, 5.2/8; 7. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 5.2/9; 7. House, Fox, 5.2/8; 7. For NBC, It Was Almost Like "Must See TV"
29 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
The final competition among the contestants on NBC's America's Got Talent, won by ventriloquist Terry Fator, drew 13.9 million viewers last Tuesday, making it the most-watched show of the week -- and of the entire summer. It also helped lift NBC to first place among adults 18-49, the group most courted by advertisers. Fox has held the top spot among that demographic group every week since last February but drew its smallest audience in two years, thanks in no small part to the debut of the network's Anchorwoman, which drew just 2.7 million viewers, the lowest-rated new show of the summer. It was canceled two days later. Still, CBS remained the favorite network overall as it averaged 6.9 million viewers for the week, translating to a 4.7 rating and an 8 share. NBC averaged 6 million (3.8/7), followed by Fox, with 4.7 million (3.0/5) and ABC with 4.5 million (3.0/5).

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. America's Got Talent, NBC, 8.4/14; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 7.0/12; 3. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.4/11; 4. 60 Minutes, CBS, 6.2/12; 4. (Tie) Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.2/10; 6. NBC NFL Pre-season Sunday, NBC, 6.0/10; 7. Power of 10, CBS, 5.8/10; 8. Cold Case, CBS, 5.7/9; 9. Criminal Minds, CBS, 5.6/9; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 5.3/9; 10. (Tie) CSI: NY, CBS, 5.3/9; 10. (Tie) Singing Bee, NBC, 5.3/9.

Sheen Blasts Richards for Ruining His "Quality Time" With Kids
28 August 2007 (WENN)
Charlie Sheen struggled to enjoy his time with his two young daughters on a California beach at the weekend, because he was being watched by his ex-wife Denise Richards' assistant. The Two and a Half Men actor and fiancee Brooke Mueller had a court-ordered supervised visit with Sam, three; and Lola, 2; in Malibu on Saturday. Sheen is fighting Richards over custody agreements, claiming he doesn't approve of the girls' nanny and wants more relaxed visits. Sheen says, "Here is my and Brooke's weekend with my kids being sullied by one of her spies. That is the thing I have to put a stop to. I can't spend quality time - times I'm never going to get again - quite frankly being observed by a perfect stranger."

Cable Show Outdraws All Network Shows
22 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
NBC's America's Got Talent got No. 1 on the Nielsen ratings list last week, tying with CBS's 60 Minutes but edging out the news magazine in total number of viewers and beating it handily in the key 18-49 adults category. The show drew 10.83 million viewers. However, had cable shows been included in the list, the Disney Channel's High School Musical 2, which drew 17.2 million viewers on Friday -- the largest audience ever to watch a show on basic cable -- would easily have come out on top. Overall, CBS continued to chalk up wins for drawing more viewers to its primetime summer schedule than any other network. However, all of the networks remained in the summer doldrums for the week. CBS averaged only a 4.5 rating and an 8 share. Fox placed second with an average 3.8/7. NBC was close behind with a 3.5/6, while ABC trailed with a 3.0/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. America's Got Talent, NBC, 6.6/12; 1. 60 Minutes, CBS, 6.6/12; 3. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.4/11; 4. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.3/11; 5. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.1/10; 6. So You Think Can Dance (Thursday) , Fox, 5.9/10; 7. NCIS, CBS, 5.8/10; 7. Singing Bee, NBC, 5.8/10; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 5.7/10; 9. CSI: NY, CBS, 5.7/10; 9. Hell's Kitchen, Fox, 5.7/9.

Ratings Confusion
15 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
All three episodes of CBS's Big Brother made Nielsen's top-ten ratings list among 18-49-year-olds last week, but not one of them ended up in the overall household category. Indeed, while CBS dominated among overall viewers, Fox was the winner among the 18-49 set, nabbing five of the top-ten positions, including No. 1 -- for Hell's Kitchen. The most-watched show among the general population, however, was NBC's America's Got Talent, which drew 10.84 million viewers, edging out CBS's 60 Minutes, with 10.22 million. Nevertheless, in a confusing ratings anomaly, 60 Minutes landed at the top of the Nielsen list. (Ratings are based on percentages of viewers.) ABC once again was unable to place a single show in the top 20 (let alone the Top 10). It's top-rated show was Tuesday's debut of the newsmagazine Primetime: Crime which wound up at No. 23. In overall household ratings, CBS took first place with an average 4.8 rating and a 9 share. NBC placed second with a 3.7/7, edging out Fox with a 3.5/6. ABC brought up the rear with a 3.0/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. 60 Minutes, CBS, 6.8/12; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.6/12; 3. America's Got Talent, NBC, 6.5/11; 4. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.4/12; 5. Criminal Minds, CBS, 6.2/11; 6. Power of 10 (Preview), CBS, 6/11; 7. CSI: NY, CBS, 5.9/11; 7. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 5.9/10; 9. Hell's Kitchen, Fox, 5.6/9; 10. Dateline (Monday), NBC, 5.5/9; 10. (Tie) The Singing Bee, NBC, 5.5/9.

NBC Singing Praise of Talent Shows
8 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
NBC continued to notch up the kind of ratings during the summer that it probably dreamed about getting during the regular season. Tuesday night's 90-minute performance episode of the network's America's Got Talent, combined with The Singing Bee on the same night proved to be a potent punch. Nevertheless, CBS remained the most-watched network during the week, even with a nearly full schedule of reruns. ABC, however, continued to struggle, with its nightly newscast turning out to be the highlight of its schedule. Indeed ABC World News With Charles Gibson produced higher ratings than any program on the network's primetime schedule. Overall, it was another week of dismal ratings, with CBS winning it with just a 4.4 rating and an 8 share. Fox placed second with a 3.5/7, edging out NBC's 3.5/6. ABC trailed with a 2.9/5.

'Singing Bee' Loses More Viewers
1 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
NBC's The Singing Bee lost a lot of its sting last week as it lost its top spot on the weekly Nielsen ratings list, falling to No. 6. It was replaced by CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the usual weekly winner when Fox's American Idol is not airing. Still, NBC's own talent contest, America's Got Talent, was a close second on the list. Fox's So You Think You Can Dance performed nicely to tie (with CBS's 60 Minutes) for third. For the most part, however, the usual broadcast network viewers had other things on their mind during the week, as CBS captured the highest average with just a 4.3 rating and an 8 share. NBC was in second place with only a 3.7/7. Fox was close behind with a 3.5/7, while ABC trailed with a 3.3/6. In the evening news race, Charles Gibson returned from vacation and ABC's World News With Charles Gibson returned to first place. The Gibson newscast drew 7.5 million viewers, while NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams drew 7.2 million. CBS Evening News With Katie Couric remained well behind with 5.9 million.

NBC's a Must-See Again
25 July 2007 (StudioBriefing)
For one week, it must have seemed like 2004 again to NBC executives. After falling into the ratings cellar during the regular season, three of the network's summer shows landed in the top ten, with one of them, The Singing Bee, holding on to the No. 1 position for the second week in a row, according to Nielsen Research. (In its third outing last night, the show slipped significantly, coming in second for the night behind its lead-in, America's Got Talent.) Nevertheless, despite NBC's comeback, CBS remained the most-watched network overall for the week as it registered an average 4.3 rating and an 8 share. NBC was close behind with a 3.9/7. Fox placed third with a 3.5/6, edging out ABC's 3.2/6.
