Chatur of 3 Idiots afraid of being typecast

8 hours ago | Filmicafe | See recent Filmicafe news »

His distorted Hindi speech is one of the biggest talking points in the recently released 3 Idiots. In reality, it was an almost similar monologue that fetched Omi Vaidya,  (who prefers to be called Omi) an La- based actor, the role of Chatur Ramalingam in the Aamir Khan-starrer.On a trip to Mumbai to check out the Bollywood scene, Omi was asked by a friend to appear for an audition. The first audition went off without a hitch, but at the second he was given a dialogue from Munnabhai... to mouth. .I just rattled it off without exactly understanding the words. almost like the speech scene in the film,. says Omi. The next thing he knew, he was pencilled in for the role of the accented, mark-obsessed Nri geek in the film. The instructions he received from the makers were clear: Don.t take Hindi classes, stop watching Hindi movies and put on weight. »

Here come the rollergirls

27 December 2009 6:28 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Rollergirls get the Hollywood treatment as Drew Barrymore makes her debut as a director… but Jessica Holland is the real thing

When I went this month to an advance screening of Whip It – a teen movie about a small-town girl who joins a roller derby league in Austin, Texas – it wasn't just because I wanted to see how Drew Barrymore measured up as a first-time director, and because I like Ellen Page, who stars in Juno. It was mostly because I got hooked on roller derby three years ago in the same way Page's character does in the film, and I wanted to see how the sport is to be presented to the world.

"Chicks beating each other up on roller skates" is the shorthand often used for women's flat track derby, but to me and 50 of my London Rollergirls teammates and rivals who were at the screening, that's about »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Extract’ Aims Satire at Land of Idiocracy

22 December 2009 8:53 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Mike Judge is fascinated by the culture of stupid. His characters are so desperate to shake up the listless patterns of their lives that they’ll resort to antics far below their normal Iq level. Judge’s third live-action feature is aimed at a generation addicted to smoking pot and watching “Family Guy,” two compulsions often used as an easy escape route from reality.

Joel (Jason Bateman) is dissatisfied with his life at work and at home. All of his problems stem from either boredom or frustration. His wife (Kristen Wiig) is tired of her job designing advertisements on her home computer, and doesn’t respond to her husband’s bedroom advances. Joel’s job as owner of an extract manufacturing plant is in turmoil when an on-the-job accident (brought about irked employees) badly injures one of his workers, whose lawsuit attracts the attention of a gold-digging con artist, »

Sundance Primer: Successful Alcoholics

21 December 2009 3:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Welcome to a new series here at Cinematical where we'll shine a spotlight on different films premiering at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in January.

We decided to do something a little bit differently for this post since Successful Alcoholics is a short film screening at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and not a feature film. But with all sorts of hype being thrown at the big feature films, we thought it might be nice to turn down a side street and take a closer look at one of the festival's more talked-about shorts. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by Tj Miller, the 25-minute short features one third of Comedy Central's "hot list" (which names the best breakout comedians of 2009), along with some other familiar faces like Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield, My Best Friend's Girl) and Tony Hale (Arrested Development).

Cinematical caught up with director Vogt-Roberts and dropped him a few questions about the film. »

'Arrested Development' Star Michael Cera Is Hopeful That The Movie Will Shoot 'Sometime Next Year'

18 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Oh "Arrested Development" movie. You wicked temptress. One minute, you're happening. Then you're not. Then you're maybe happening, but somewhere far down the road. Then that ship has maybe sailed, but then it pulls into port again. So how about now? Are we there yet? Soon enough, says star Michael Cera...

"I'm pretty sure it'll happen, I just don't know when," the actor told MTV at a press junket for "Youth in Revolt," which hits theaters on January 8. "I think sometime next year, hopefully, we'll be shooting," he said, adding quickly once again, "I hope." Encouraging words, despite the qualifiers.

You can't really blame the guy for being cautious. I would guess that he hears the words "Arrested Development" in nearly every interview he sits down for. An accidentally chosen phrase could be blown totally out of proportion. A phrase like "I think sometime next year," in fact. "But he promised! »

'Arrested Development' Expected to Start Shooting in Early 2010

18 December 2009 1:49 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

It seems that Michael Cera cannot wait longer to work on "Arrested Development". After wrapping the shooting for "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World", the actor's schedule is quite free and he is ready to shoot the movie adaption of the Fox's sitcom. "I think sometime next year, hopefully, we'll be shooting," Cera told MTV when he was interviewed on Thursday afternoon, December 17. "I hope [we'll shoot in 2010]. I think that's realistic."

Expressing his eagerness to team up with Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, David Cross, and other members of Bluth family, Cera said, "I'm really excited to get to be around everyone again. It was so weird when the show was canceled. You're doing a TV show, and it feels like family, and then you're not doing it anymore." He then added, "It was a really strange thing to leave. I'm excited to be around them all again."

This crew comes together to form the all-female rock band The Runaways for writer/director Floria Sigismondi's biopic... "The Runaways." And we've got their first trailer, exclusively here on MTV. I get a strong Quentin Tarantino vibe from the way this is cut. What do you think?

Morning Brew: Thursday, Dec. 17

17 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Morning!

SnagFilms.com is reporting that the rights to the U.S. film version of Stieg Larsson's best-selling The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (and its sequels) are going to Sony as of today. One of the novel's major characters is "bisexual tattooed hacker detective Lisbeth Salander." There's already a Swedish film adaptation, starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. Here's a clip:

Rhapsody.com has wrapped up the decade in music, including a write-up on queer pop and rock, from k.d. lang to Le Tigre to Lady Gaga. Although I'm not so sure I like the "pink face" term they're pushing, I like the inclusion of Queen Latifah. She's so gay friendly, isn't she?

Clea DuVall will guest star on Numb3rs in 2010 as "as the sister of a murdered escort." Girlfriend is making her way through every crime show on TV. I wouldn't mind if she came back »

'Sometime next year we'll be shooting,' the 'Youth in Revolt' star reveals. 'I think that's realistic.'

West Hollywood, California — If not for "Arrested Development," it's hard to imagine there ever would have been a "Juno," a "Superbad" or the unlikely A-list Hollywood star that is Michael Cera. It seems only appropriate, then, that the 21-year-old's New Year's resolution is to finally return to the beloved Bluth family.

"I think sometime next year, hopefully, we'll be shooting," Cera revealed to MTV News on Thursday afternoon (December 17), giving renewed hope to the die-hard fans who've been pining for "Arrested Development: The Movie" since the groundbreaking comedy was yanked off the air. "I hope [we'll shoot in 2010]. I think that's realistic."

On January 8, Cera will release the endearingly quirky teen flick "Youth in Revolt," but after that, the in-demand star's schedule is wide open. »

Free Flick of the Day: The Hebrew Hammer

15 December 2009 5:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Chanukkah isn't over yet! There's still time to celebrate those eight crazy nights with "the baddest Heeb this side of Tel Aviv" for free on SlashControl. The Hebrew Hammer, starring the only dude who could make modified side curls sexy, Adam Goldberg, is a comedy that takes its cues from '70s movies like Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and Shaft and but has more in common with take-offs on the Blaxploitation genre like Black Dynamite.

Mordechai Jefferson Carver (Goldberg) and his buddy Mohammed Ali Paula Abdul Rahim (Mario Van Peebles*) band together with Hebrew hottie Esther Bloomenbergensteinenthal (the adorable Judy Greer, aka Kitty Sanchez from Arrested Development) to fight Santa's wayward son, played by Andy Dick. Can Morchechai and his buddies save the tribe from a boozy Santa Jr. in an ugly sweater? Will Esther and Mordy make it a double mitzvah on the Sabbath? Maybe! Watch it on SlashControl now. »

First Image from The Runaways Starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning

12 December 2009 7:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With the 2010 Sundance Film Festival on the horizon, another film releases its first photos.  This time it’s the Runaways, the story of the all-chick rock band starring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherrie Currie.  The film co-stars Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween), and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road).  For those just tuning in, here’s the official Sundance synopsis:

Of all the bands to come out of the 1970s Los Angeles music scene, The Runaways are by far the most uniquely fascinating. This is partially due to their music but more so to the fact that they were teenage girls whose wild and reckless lifestyle was the stuff of legend.

Focusing on the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett and lead vocalist Cherie Currie as they navigate a rocky road of touring and record-label woes, the film chronicles the band’s »

Part 4: From Michael Cera to Frank Black

Michael Cera Deluding awkward indie boys into thinking they'd get the girl since 2003

Before Michael Cera starred in mega-hits Juno and Superbad, the typical star of a Us teen movie was more likely to be the wonderfully horrible Steve Stifler from American Pie. Since Cera broke out from Arrested Development, lead teen males are now the types who wear newish Sonic Youth T-shirts, stare at their tennis shoes while muttering about Zooey Deschanel and pack as much charm as a destitute leprechaun. At first, Cera's emergence was a huge victory for the geek: 15-year-old Decemberists fans finally had a hero just like them! But then he went and made Year Zero, Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist and Paper Heart and we went back to our working on our poetry.

DVD Review: ‘Paper Heart’ Intriguingly Blurs Line Between Reality, Fiction

11 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Some actors are so good that it’s easy to take their work for granted. Take Michael Cera, the veteran child actor-turned-unlikely teen heartthrob. From his breakout work in “Arrested Development,” to his crowd-pleasing performances in “Superbad” and “Juno,” Cera has created a comic persona as indelible as Woody Allen’s.

The sweetly neurotic vulnerability he exudes is so authentic, it’s easy for audiences to confuse the actor with the characters he regularly portrays. Is he a brilliant actor, or is he simply playing himself (which itself is no easy feat)? Such questions lie at the deceptive heart of Nicholas Jasenovec’s intriguing and infuriating romantic comedy.

DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0

Paper Heart” purports itself to be documentary about one young woman’s quest to discover the nature of love. The woman is Charlyne Yi, a comedian and performance artist not unlike Cera (she’s best known for her scene-stealing »

'Extract' Roundtable with Mike Judge - Live

10 December 2009 11:17 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I'm currently sitting in a virtual roundtable session [read: chat room] with Mike Judge (the man behind Extract, Office Space and Idiocracy) as he talks about his latest film Extract and fields questions from his fellow chatroom patrons. The roundtable comes to you courtesy of the new Blu-ray and DVD release of Extract. The page will update as questions are asked. If you want to ask a question, leave it in the comments and with luck it'll show up here.

Q: Was there instant chemistry when the actors began working together or did it take some time for them to gel?

Mike Judge: For the most part it was instant. And most of them had already worked together or knew each other, so it all gelled nicely.

Q: Was it your idea to cast rocker Gene Simmons as bench lawyer Joe Adler?

Mike Judge: Yeah, I had originally described the character »

Michael Cera wants to tickle your belly button from the inside

9 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

There's a new red band trailer for Michael Cera's Youth in Revolt up on College Humor. You can watch it if you're in a safe place that promotes sex and filth (like the EW office), but if you're not, I've taken the liberty of inserting inside-jokey terms from Arrested Development in place of the "naughty" bits of some of the dialogue, below. Watch your mouth, George Michael Bluth! "I'm gonna help you stick your filthy in this tomato." "I'm gonna and wear you like the crown that you are." "Hey, does that movie come with for your ?" First look at Lauren Graham on NBC's Parenthood

9 December 2009 6:34 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Parenthood was supposed to be one of NBC's fall shows this year. They really could have used it too, since it's actually good, and "good" seems to be in short supply at NBC these days. However, star Maura Tierney had to stop filming early on due to health reasons. Eventually she needed to leave the cast permanently, and re-shoots had to be done with her replacement, Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham.

NBC has just released the first two promos for Parenthood, which is now premiering in March, after the Olympics. The first one features Graham as Sarah, a single mom to two difficult teenagers. Her daughter is played by Arrested Development's Mae Whitman. It's a short clip, but it's a pretty good indication of the character, which is basically what would have happened to Lorelai Gilmore if Rory hadn't turned out so perfect.
