A 21st century Alice in Wonderland as reworked by acclaimed fantasy author Neil Gaiman and graphic artist/designer turned director Dave McKean, MirrorMask follows the odyssey of a frustrated teenage girl (Stephanie Leonidas) who works in a down-at-heels family circus, who falls into a nightmare that mirrors her real life with a warped and weird reflection when her mother (Gina McKee) collapses after a heated argument. "The work of fantasist Neil Gaiman finally makes it to the screen - with its innate sense of wonder intact, even - with this entertaining if sporadically overstuffed package of magic, mystery, and masked madwomen," writes Austin Chronicle critic Marc Savlov. "(T)here are moments of pure cinematic imagination that are wholly unique and engrossing… Unfortunately, McKean's film is shot through with a serious case of the Made-for-BBCTVs; from the acting (not too shabby) to the pacing (all over the place), MirrorMask feels like a midweek TV special, albeit a particularly inventive one." The Jim Henson company produces and helps bring the mad world to life with their unique approach to creature creation and visual effects. Rob Brydon, Jason Barry and Dora Bryan co-star and Stephen Fry has a small role.
