If you were to peek into an alternate universe in which Martin Ellingham, the main character of ITV's Doc Martin, was more like a human being, you'd end up with Doc Martin: The Movies. Out on DVD from Acorn Media on August 30, Doc Martin: The Movies features two films featuring the prototype Doc Martin character. This time, though, he's Martin Bamford, a rather pleasant fellow with the occasional ruthless tendencies and lapses in judgment. He's more fun than his grouchy, antisocial counterpart from the ITV series, and he is, strangely, more watchable (though that's not to take away from the current Doc, who has become one of the most endearing characters on TV).
The set contains two feature-length films: Doc Martin and Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie. Set in Port Isaac, an absolutely beautiful coastal village, the films follow fish-out-of-water Martin in his attempts to escape his past.
