Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years. Our next subject is a director who made his debut this decade and was immediately compared to Terrence Malick. Some have suggested that he’s faltered recently and maybe they’re right but his early films are such a high point in modern indie cinema he more than qualifies as one of the best directors of this decade. I’m talking about: David Gordon Green.
Number of Films: Five
Modern Masterpieces: George Washington.
Total Disasters: None, though a few mixed efforts.
Better than you remember: Undertow, while flawed is still a worthwhile endeavor, better than the reaction it's been given.
Awards: Some Spirit Award noms, but not much else. Not enough.
Box Office: 89 mil for Pineapple Express, the expected winner.
Critical Consensus: George Washington was his best received film. All downhill from there.
Favorite Actor: Paul Schnieder

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far:

The Sundance Film Festival unveiled its list of films competing for its prestigious awards Wednesday, and the names of stars appearing in the drama category seemed as impressive as those in any Oscar contest. Among them were Kristen Stewart, James Gandolfini, Orlando Bloom, Laura Linny, Edie Falco, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Mary-Louise Parker, America Fererra, and Michelle Williams. The World Cinema competition will feature films from 14 countries (including one, Undertow, which is a joint Colombia-France-Germany-Peru production). Among them is a film from Iraq, Son of Babylon, that takes place following the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that,

Sundance Institute has announced the line-up of films competing for jury prizes during the 26th Sundance Film Festival's U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions. Among the wide-ranging list of movies selected for the competitions are Kristen Stewart-starring drama "Welcome to the Rileys", family drama "Blue Valentine" starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, and James Franco's non-fiction drama "Howl".
Speaking about this year's selection, newly installed director of the festival John Cooper said, "A lot of our films are hard to describe, and that's very attractive." He then added, "We put marketability on the sidelines for a while and said, 'Let's just go for films that were highly original and pushed the envelope.'"
The 2010 Sundance Film Festival that runs January 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah will include new non-competitive categories called Spotlight, for what are viewed as particularly audience-friendly films,

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Today the Sundance Institute announced the films that will be in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in both the U.S. and International dramatic and documentary categories. The festival will run from January 21-31 in Park City, Utah. There are a few changes this year as there will be no opening-night picture and the festival will take select festival films to eight cities during as the fest plays out.
Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.
As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling,

The Sundance Film Festival is where some of the great films of the year will get their first viewings, and if you don’t believe me, here’s just some of the great films this year that made their debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival: Precious, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, Bronson, Moon and even (500) Days of Summer, which I didn’t care for but made a big splash.
The festival is where buzz starts happening and now Sundance has released the list of which films will be in competition for 2010. Keep in mind that there are plenty of other films which play out of competition and can be just as great. But some of the big names fighting for the crown are the Allen Ginsberg obscenity trial film Howl starring General Hospital’s James Franco, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut Sympathy for Delicious,

Us 'Suspiria' Remake Shooting in 2010

I don't have a gauge on whether or not David Gordon Green is the right guy to direct a remake of Suspiria, which if it's not the scariest horror movie ever made might be the freaky deakiest. For the record, Dario Argento's surreal classic probably does deserve the remake treatment, if only because it's so unapproachable to American audiences. The hope is that a remake would be a nice introduction to the original for millions of people, although nice is probably the wrong word to use.
Most audiences know Green from Pineapple Express, but he got his start with some indie movies that could prepare him for something like Suspiria, especially his underrated 2004 film Undertow. But Suspiria is one of those movies you really only get one shot at, I'm thinking. If the remake blows, that's probably the end of the line.

While Italian director Luca Guadagnino was telling those lovely people at Variety all about his plans to remake Auntie Mame with Tilda Swinton in the title role (read our story on it here), he also let slip some hot info about another remake that he’s producing: David Gordon Green’s remake of Suspiria, which will start shooting, apparently, in 2010.Yes, Dario Argento’s Suspiria. The nutso, bizarro, absolutely cream crackers horror classic, about a coven of witches terrorising a dance academy, will be remade by David Gordon Green, the indie king renowned for his carefully calibrated, emotionally layered and visually beautiful dramas, like George Washington, Snow Angels and Undertow. We’ve known that for a while, of course. The news was first announced in 2008, when it made about the same amount of sense as it does now. But not making any sense is an Argento trademark, so in a way Green – who,

Twilight and New Moon star Kristen Stewart: brains, beauty, and talent

Kristen Jaymes Stewart was but a newborn babe in arms on April 9, 1990. John and Jules Stewart brought her into the world on that day and bestowed her with that daring namesake. Eighteen years later, that very name would be one echoing from gleeful mouths across the globe - as she would make her way around to promote the world-renowned film she took the challenging lead in.
Kristen Stewart’s advance to the metaphorical top has not been instantaneous, by a long shot, but her role in 2008’s Twilight would ring in not only her first year of adulthood, but also, it seems, a whole new professional lifestyle.
Her start was ambitious, but Stewart’s beginnings in film were impressive, indeed.
At eleven, Stewart took her first role in a film called The Safety Of Objects. Portraying Sam Jennings, that little lady stole the stage as an angst-ridden know-it-all that many eleven-year-olds find themselves to be.

It may be a stretch to label David Gordon Green as “up and coming”, as the 34-year old Director already has a four-pack of highly rated and critically acclaimed independent features and one studio semi-hit to his name, but Green is definitely one to watch. From the transcendent Terrence-Malick-esque “George Washington” to the laugh-out-loud stoner movie with a brain “Pineapple Express”, he has displayed a talent which is capable of excelling in a number of different genres. He will return to comedy again with “Your Highness”, which will star Natalie Portman, James Franco, Ben Best and Danny McBride.
Danny McBride and Ben Best also write the script together. Best plays an arrogant lazy prince who, with his brother (James Franco), must complete a quest to save the kingdom and his brother’s fiancee. Natalie Portman will play a warrior princess that the lazy prince falls in love with. The story

Co-Creator of Gizmondo Handheld Video Game System Gets a Biopic

Hey, remember the Gizmondo? No? I don't blame you. It was a handheld video game system that came out back in 2005 and tried to compete with the big boys (Nintendo and Sony), only to become one of the worst commercial flops in recent years. There have since been some sketchy rumours about a next-gen Gizmondo in development, but now it looks like the system may be making a comeback of a different sort: on the big screen!
That's right, director Craig Zobel and producer Beau Flynn believe that the story behind this epic fail is fit for a feature film, and you know what? I actually agree with them. The movie, tentatively titled Gizmondo, will be based on a Wired Magazine article [1] about Swedish co-creator/con artist Bo Stefan Eriksson, who had ties to organized crime and was eventually charged for embezzlement, grand theft auto, cocaine possession, and weapons charges,

Kristen Jaymes Stewart, who is currently in the midst of filming The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is officially nineteen years old today (April 9th)! Including her current projects (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, K-11, and The Runaways), Stewart's youth has proved no obstacle to accomplishment as she boasts twenty-two films (and counting) on her resume already.
Beginning back in 2001 with her role as Sam Jennings in The Safety of Objects, and up to her latest completed and newly released picture Adventureland, Kristen Stewart has seen the kind of success that most actors might only dream about.
Kristen's curriculum vitae includes the following films (in order from oldest to newest): The Safety of Objects, Panic Room, Cold Creek Manor, Speak, Catch that Kid, Undertow, Fierce People, Zathura: A Space Adventure, In the Land of Women, The Messengers, The Cake Eaters, Into the Wild, Cutlass, The Yellow Handkerchief, What Just Happened,

Adventureland Review
Written and Directed by: Greg Mottola
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Martin Starr, Ryan Reynolds, Matt Bush
Although Judd Apatow is currently one of the biggest comedy directors and producers working in Hollywood today, his legacy actually started back in the '90s working as a writer on a number of TV shows. It was the often-praised yet criminally short-lived series, Freaks and Geeks, which he co-created with Paul Feig that truly showcased his touch for crafting stories that were both endearing and hilarious (and, in fact, launched the careers of almost everyone involved with it).
So why am I bringing up Freaks and Geeks in a review of a film that Judd Apatow had nothing to do with? Well, it's because Greg Mottola's Adventureland contains all of the same elements that made Freaks and Geeks such a beloved classic -- even moreso
