More Ani, Less Hilary!
Ms. (or maybe Mr. to me) Ani Difranco is my favorite musician of all time. Naturally upon hearing of the release of "Render" I wanted to be first in line at my local record shop to get the DVD, bring it home and experience the wonder. While I want to be a snob and say that everything Ani places her name on is pure gold that is inappropriate and irresponsible of me. This movie, featuring Ani could have been so much more. It is quite possible that I just built the hype up too much but on a second and third look what I found jarring and distancing about the material the first time were only cemented. Hilary Goldberg (the director) doesn't seem to know what to do with a camera. She moves it all about and keeps nothing in focus as the subject. The first twenty to thirty moments are the most irritating. Wildly swirling her camera here, slow-motion pans and tilts there and excursions to people independent of Ani in pretty much every way, all seemingly with no purpose making Goldberg's style take on too much over her substance. While it is great that Ani is now on video for her legions of fans it seems to be more of Hilary's show than Ani's.
