Hindsight teaches that every so often, passing on a particular show is the best thing a channel could have done. Not ordering one pilot to series spurs its creators on to start another, and frees up its cast to join new projects.
Had the failures below all thrived, there’s a chance we could now be living in a world with no Breaking Bad, Hannibal, or even South Park. Had these pilots gone on to enjoy healthy, lengthy lives, then Jack Bauer, Oberyn Martell, Chandler Bing and more might all be unrecognisable today.

Michael J. Fox has stayed close to home in casting the female lead in Hench at Home, his ABC comedy pilot inspired by his family life, as real-life wife Tracy Pollan has been tapped for the role. Meanwhile, Tony Award winner Audra McDonald has been cast to replace Theresa Randle as one of the two leads on CBS' drama pilot Violent Crime. Production on the pilot, which was halted earlier in the week, will resume this weekend, with new director Thomas Carter replacing Stephen Gyllenhaal. In other pilot casting news, Susan Gibney (NBC's Crossing Jordan) and Hamish Linklater (HBO's Live From Baghdad) have joined the NBC/NBC Studios comedy pilot Happy Family.

Actor-comedian Brian Haley has been cast as the third brother in David E. Kelley's series for CBS The Brotherhood of Poland, N.H., while Broadway leading man Craig Bierko has been tapped for the lead role in Michael J. Fox's comedy pilot for ABC, Hench at Home. In other casting news, Michael DeLuise has been added to the cast of ABC's untitled Dan Finnerty comedy pilot, while Antonio Sabato Jr. and Al Santos have been cast in the WB Network's comedy pilot The Help. Haley rounds out the cast of Poland, from David E. Kelley Prods. and 20th Century Fox TV, about three brothers (Haley, Randy Quaid, John Carroll Lynch) in the small town of Poland. Michael Pressman is directing the pilot and executive producing with Kelley.
