While it is certainly the case that a female-led film is always welcome, it is somewhat unfortunate that most supernatural thrillers follow the tried and tested formula of having the sinister supernatural aspects centre on a woman. Whether it be demonic possession (Drag Me To Hell, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose), hauntings (Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, Amityville: The Awakening, It Follows) or psychic phenomenon (Premonition, The Gift) – women just seem to be Hollywood magnets for unexplained forces of darkness. Last month we told you that Taken director Pierre Morel was the guy to step up and fill the director role when Peter Berg departed from the project.
Morel plans to make a faithful adaptation of the book and for that he will need a writer. According to THR’s Heat Vision blog, Chase Palmer has been hired to work on Josh Zetumer’s Dune screenplay. Palmer’s previous works include writing/directing three feature films Neo-noir, Shock And Awesome, and Number 13. The latter will see a 2011 release.
