James Cameron’s Avatar: best long-toothed ensemble blue cast
The nominations for the 2010 SAG Awards will be announced tomorrow morning by Michelle Monaghan and Chris O’Donnell. As usual, expect some surprises.
In the past, SAG voters — only a relatively small group of SAG members vote on the nominations — have made unexpected choices such as Dev Patel for best supporting actor in Slumdog Millionaire, best actress nods for Ziyi Zhang in Memoirs of a Geisha and Patricia Clarkson in The Station Agent, and best ensemble nods for 3:10 to Yuma, Hairspray, and Hustle & Flow.
My SAG Award predictions are probably as accurate as the ones I made for the Golden Globes a while back. In [...]

It's a 'Win Win' Situation for Tom McCarthy

The popularity of The Visitor has surely helped secure financing for his next project -- another independent film drama titled "Win Win" which according to Pw, is due to begin filming late February in New York and New Jersey. McCarthy filmed The Station Agent in several parts of the garden state. Look for more details to trickle in next month. - Overture Films were all too happy with the results of writer/director Tom McCarthy's The Visitor. The socially conscious, post 9/11 commentary, lite drama starring Richard Jenkins and Hiam Abbass drew in audiences -- the film remained in theaters for a seven month stretch and accompanying 9 million dollar plus box office take. Pretty darn good for an indie pic. After appearing in Lukas Moodysson's Mammoth, Duplicity, 2012, The Lovely Bones, David Schwimmer's Trust (currently filming), it looks like McCarthy is going to begin to put the emphasis back

Five Questions with Patricia Clarkson

In an industry where actresses face fewer options as they get older, Patricia Clarkson has defied the odds. Years after making her debut in Brian de Palma's 1987 crime pic The Untouchables and landing a breakthrough role in 1998's High Art, she's hit her stride and become one of Hollywood's most popular character actresses. In the decade of the '00s alone, the plaudits and awards have come left and right: an Oscar nomination for Pieces of April, two Emmy wins for HBO's "Six Feet Under,"and critics' awards for Far From Heaven, The Station Agent, Good Night, and Good Luck. (In 2009, the Year of the Cougar, Clarkson was also handpicked to star in Saturday Night Live's "Motherlover," an honor of another kind.)
So when Cinematical met Clarkson during last month's Savannah Film Festival, we jumped at the chance to talk with the actress about her career - past,

Sarah Silverman is easily considered one of the most popular female comics working today. Unfortunately with that title often comes the inability to score roles as the sexy female lead. You never see Whoopi Goldberg as the sexy girl next door or Paula Poundstone as the attractive school teacher.
Thankfully, that’s exactly what we get with Steve Buscemi’s newest dark comedy, Saint John of Las Vegas. Silverman takes on the role of the attractive, manipulative cubical neighbor to Buscemi, who is later trumped by Emmanuel Chiriqui in the film.
The film stars Buscemi as ex-gambler John, who gets lured back into the sleazy underbelly of the City of Sin by a veteran insurance fraud investigator. The film also stars a few other folks who aren’t strangers to the world of indie comedy. Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent), Tim Blake Neslon (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), and Romany Malco

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
I know I shouldn't be surprised the Blu-ray, 2-disc DVD and single-disc DVD are the numbers 1, 2 and 3 best-sellers at Amazon this week, but for some reason I would have thought all the negative talk about this film surrounding its release would have discouraged folks to throw to down their hard-earned cash to endure this pummeling one more time. However, I can say it is nice to see prices on Blu-rays are dropping slightly, so much to the point the Blu-ray edition of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is actually $3 less than the 2-disc DVD, at only $19.99. That's all I really have to say about this one.
Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection)
I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one (read that here) and was really impressed with the entire package, which not only includes Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding,

A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin's fantasy series that begins with the novel A Game of Thrones, is being adapted into a series by HBO, and Sean Bean has just nabbed the lead role, according to THR. (This news was actually reported last week by the George R.R. Martin fansite Winter is Coming and I let it pass as too unsubstantiated. Oh, well.) Bean will play the honorable and upright Lord Eddard 'Ned' Stark, Warden of the North, who acts as advisor to King Robert I Baratheon, a role for which Mark Addy is in final talks.
The Station Agent and The Visitor director Tom McCarthy is directing; David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wrote the screenplay which adapts Martin's text about the conflict between two sprawling royal (and semi-royal) families in a land reminiscent of medieval Europe, where seasons can last for decades, making the coming

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members.
"These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks."
The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's

'The Hangover'

In America, there is the soft R rating for films like Michael Clayton, Shakespeare in Love and The Station Agent; all critically approved films that, but for a few profanities or some brief nudity, would be safe for the PG-13 viewing masses. And then there is The Hangover, a film that gleefully gives the finger to the MPAA and anyone with a sense of propriety.
My conservative parents would weep knowing that their daughter saw such a film, and they’d be even sadder to know that she really, really liked it.
Old School director Todd Philips undoubtedly ups the ante with this raunchy comedy. For anyone who was disgusted by shots of a running, naked Will Ferrell in the director’s previous film, The Hangover shows far more of bearded comedian Zach Galifianakis than should be legally allowed. And the alcohol-fueled, frat-boy humor of Old School looks like Hannah Montana: The Movie

Did You Know That Tom McCarthy Helped Write Pixar's Up?

I wasn't the only one who noticed something strange in the opening credits for Pixar's Up when I saw it a few weeks ago - Tom McCarthy was credited as a screenwriter along with Bob Peterson. McCarthy, who is also an actor, is probably best known for writing and directing both The Station Agent and The Visitor from last year. He's a great writer and it's very cool to see Pixar reaching out to people outside of their own studio to help work on their movies. Plus, I think his involvement can definitely be felt in the movie, as the story in Up is truly wonderful. SlashFilm has a few more details on how this collaboration first came together.
"Bob and I developed the idea [for Up], played with it for quite a while and then [Bob] was on Rat (the working title for Ratatouille)," director Pete Docter told SlashFilm. "And

Chicago – Pixar’s “Up” recently became the first animated 3D film to open the Cannes Film Festival and the reviews were just as rapturous as those who had been tracking the latest Pixar offering expected them to be. Before he want to France, director Pete Docter sat down for an exclusive interview with HollywoodChicago.com.
Docter has been a part of the Pixar team since the beginning and remains one of the most prominent voices in the company along with John Lasseter (“Toy Story”), Brad Bird (“Ratatouille,” “The Incredibles”) and Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “Wall-e”). Docter made a splash when he directed “Monsters Inc.” and will make waves with “Up”.
For someone who has made such vibrant, energetic, nearly-glowing films, Docter is a surprisingly humble and quiet man. It’s not an accident that he’s made a film about a man escaping the dangerous, depressing world on the ground

For those of you still wondering if Pixar has "done it again," I've rounded up a couple more positive reviews for Up, as I can't seem to find a negative one just yet. A good sign? I think so...
Early Reviews: Up
Judging by some of the reviews I've read, it looks like Up will require its own brand of 3D glasses. Supposedly the audience at Cannes was given neither the red-blue or polarized glasses, but something heavier. Did I mention "eco-friendly"? Whoa.
Empire Online
To be honest, I hadn't quite known what to expect, but in retrospect it's pretty much (high) standard Pixar. I wasn't so sure about some of the sentimentality (in that it was a little conventional, not that it was overdone), but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the gags. Tom McCarthy, wildman director of The Station Agent and The Visitor, is credited as a co-writer,
