In the days leading up to its original release, The Alchemist drummed up anticipation for the project on his Instagram account. After sharing a brief audio clip, he teased the tracklist and announced a joint show at the Jazz Cafe in London taking place on August 25th.
Besides the album’s sole single, “Sentry” featuring Mike, the only place to hear the full project at first was Gala, a streaming platform that utilizes blockchain technology and offers NFTs connected to releases. The Alchemist has returned with Flying High, an eight-song EP featuring Earl Sweatshirt, billy woods, Boldy James, and more. Listen to the EP and check out the music video for the opening track “Rip Tracy” below.
With soulful samples galore, Flying High shows off The Alchemist’s ability to craft velvety, lyric-centric hip-hop. “Rip Tracy,” which features Earl and woods, places the rappers’ calculated flows in the spotlight, while tracks like “Bless” boast melodic, jazzy arrangements. T.F, Mike, Sideshow, Larry June, and Jay Worthy all appear on the EP as well.
Like previous Alchemist releases — such as Lunch Meat, Bread, and This Thing of Ours 2 — Flying High begins with four tracks featuring lyrics, followed by instrumental versions of the same four tracks. Splitting it up this way, it makes it all the more easy to appreciate the balance between lyricism and sheer musical prowess that The Alchemist has perfected.

Pat Cooper, an acerbic stand-up comedian who later had a career acting in films and TV series including Analyze This, Seinfeld and the original Charlie’s Angels and was a favorite of Howard Stern, died Tuesday at his home in Las Vegas. He was 93.
His wife, Emily Connor, announced the news.
Born Pasquale Caputo on July 31, 1929, in Brooklyn, he tried to join multiple branches of the U.S. Armed Forces but was rejected and turned to comedy. He adopted his stage name during an early-’60s stint doing stand-up, which further angered the Italian family he often roasted in his act.
Cooper became estranged from his parents while focusing on his insult-heavy comedy career. His angry onstage persona led to multiple firings from stints opening for the likes of Frank Sinatra and Paul Anka. By the mid-’60s, he was being booked on many of the era’s most popular variety...

Seated among plaques of Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Lil Wayne at Noble Studios in Harlem, the Charlotte-raised rapper Mavi tells me about how a chance encounter with Zora Neale Hurston’s You Don’t Know Us Negroes helped change the direction of his life. Earlier this year, he read her essay about High John de Conquerer, often depicted in folklore as a prince turned enslaved person with a glass-half-full sense of humor on his plantation. “He was the personification of laughter on the plantation and amusement at the expense of the slave master,...

It’s been over two years since Billie Eilish released her chart-dominating debut, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and fans have, seemingly, been getting impatient. Last week, she finally announced its followup, Happier Than Ever, would be arriving this summer, and it promptly shot to the top of the Apple Music Pre-Add Chart.
During the week of April 23 through April 29th, Happier Than Ever, which drops July 30th, pulled in more pre-adds than any other album on the platform. Pre-adds allow listeners to queue up an...

Vinny Vella -- who starred in "Casino" and several other gangster movies -- has died after battling cancer. His rep posted a message late Wednesday night, saying ... "We are saddened to report that Vinny Vella has passed and I'm sure that no one is more saddened than himself. Welcome to the seventh installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the seventh episode, “Down Neck," coming up just as soon as the clown gets arrested, too... "My son is doomed, right?" -Tony The morning after "The Sopranos" series finale aired, David Chase reluctantly got on the phone with me to talk about everything but his intentions for the final scene.

Small Planet Pictures has picked up the distribution rights to actor-writer-director Danny Provenzano's true-life mob feature This Thing of Ours. Starring Frank Vincent (GoodFellas) and Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Thing tells the true-life crime story of a 21st century breed of gangsters who steal hundreds of millions of dollars from the world's banks. Using a highly sophisticated Internet and satellite system, the gang pulls off the biggest heist in the history of the American Mafia. Small Planet is a Florida-based independent distribution company founded by Michael S. Broder in July. Thing marks the company's fourth theatrical release.
