Alamo programmers’ Top 10 of ‘09…plus Top 20 of the Decade!

5 January 2010 3:38 PM, PST | OriginalAlamo.com | See recent AlamoDrafthouseCinema news »

The picture to the left has nothing to do with anything released in the last ten years, but it is from a movie.

Here in the Alamo programming office, movies are a big deal. We each watch approximately 215 movies per day, seven days a week, no holidays.

It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. It’s even more difficult to figure out what the best 20 films were in the past decade. But we do it all for you.

The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2009, plus the finest we’ve seen since Y2K destroyed civilization. Take a look, disagree, get furious and attack us on the street.

Warning: We’ve got switchblades.

Top 50 Performances of the Decade (Male)

5 January 2010 5:01 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

They aren't ranked. Deal with it. I must thank these 47 actors again (three performers have two entries) one last time for delivering such indelible characterizations these past ten years. Bid them adieu before moving on to a fresh decade, the Teens. You may notice that this list includes no 2009 performances. It's too early! I don't wanna give away my upcoming nominees and I still need time to let the year settle. My dozen favorites are selected rather impulsively in red. And with "best/favorites" it's always subject to change with the passing of time... or moods.

Adrien Brody, The Pianist (2002)Andy Serkis, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) *

Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast (2001)Bill Murray, Lost in Translation (2003)

Top 50 Performances of the Decade (Female)

5 January 2010 4:59 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

This list has more repeat offenders than the male list yesterday. Please give these 45 talented women one last round of applause before we take a break from the decade stuff to embark on the 2009 awards. As with the male list, I didn't include any 2009 performances (let the year settle first) though there is at least one that would obviously (x 50) be here if I did...

"And it's time my luck changed. And it's time something went right for me!"

-"Julia" makes a plea for a surprise Tilda Swinton nomination this year.

Please Note: This list should not be mistaken for an updated 'Actresses of the Aughts' chart. [editors note: I may attempt to return to that massive project in a definitive way after this year's Oscar race is complete]. How you feel about someone's entire career can be markedly different than how you feel about individual turns and an actress whose skill you may admire might not hit you as hard emotionally as she hits others. Then there are actresses I »

These days, the one word on every moviegoer's lips is "Avatar." With the box-office receipts soaring, the love story and special effects fueling repeat views, and Oscar-buzz building, it's unlike anything we've seen since ... well, the last James Cameron feature film, 1997's "Titanic."

In the 12 years following that movie's release, stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have made good on their promise, racking up instant classics and awards nods with equal aplomb. On Monday, we took a hard look at whether "Avatar" star Sam Worthington could use his momentum to launch a Leo-like career. Now, it's time to compare Cameron's leading ladies and look at why Zoe Saldana could become the »

The Films of the Decade Results: Voted by You

1 January 2010 8:47 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

So, it’s been a busy month with votes coming in by the thousand but now that New Years Day has arrived we’ve been able to collate all your votes to give you the definitive list of movies that you believe defined the decade.

I’ll be looking at the top 10 in more depth below but you can download the entire list of movies by opening this Pdf. So, read on to find out which movies you believe most defined the decade.

Let us know your thoughts on the top 10 in the comments below. One question I have: If Avatar has come out earlier in the decade, would it have made your top 10 films of the past 10 years? Personally it would make it into my top 10 of 2009. Possibly even be number one.

10. There Will Be Blood (2007)

10 New Classics from the Decade

31 December 2009 11:25 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The ReelzChannel 100 began when we asked Leonard Maltin for his favorite Hidden Gems of the decade. His list led the web team into a general discussion about the best movies of the decade and — after no small amount of debate, arguing, and (we're not proud to say) some petty name-calling — we decided we'd better bring it to an end with a company-wide vote. Then it was just a matter of tallying up the votes and hoping for the best. Lucky for us, ReelzChannel is filled with a staff ranging from movie lovers to movie fanatics. What turned out isn't what you'll find on a critic's best of list — instead it's what movie fans really enjoyed.

In our final day of the ReelzChannel 100, we highlight 10 New Classics from the Decade.

Matt’s Top 20 Films of the 2000s

31 December 2009 7:14 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’ve really enjoyed the lists I’ve posted this week and I hope you have too.  I keep notes year-round on everything I feel is worth noting about particular movies so I don’t forget and I can compile it into what (hopefully) makes or an informative read.  However, this list I’ve been dreading.  Unlike the other lists, there’s no real recommendation at work here.  It’s a list designed to highlight mostly beloved and established films.  It’s also difficult to factor in films of 2008 and 2009 because I don’t know their staying power.  Finally, it’s a list that will ultimately please no one because there’s no way I can narrow the hundreds of great films that have come out over the last ten years into twenty that I’ve determined are better than all the rest.  So why am I doing it?  I have my reasons. »
