'The Vampire Diaries' Gets New Blood

The CW's breakout hit, The Vampire Diaries adds a new member to the supernaturally-attractive cast. Starting with the January 21 episode, Mia Kirshner will join the cast as the wife of history teacher/vampire Alaric.
According to EW.com, the January 21 episode has long been in the can, and hints that "11th hour reshoots" were done to add her to the episode. I'm a little wary of last-minute reshoots, as they tend to be… well, not good. But I love Mia Kirshner, so I will keep an open mind.
Kirshner is probably best known for her role in Showtime's The L Word, but FEARnet readers are probably more familiar with her work in Exotica, The Crow: City of Angels, and The Black

Kirschner will first appear in the January 21st episode. (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files)
Starz has renewed drama series Spartacus for a second season, more than a month before the first season even premieres. Season Two of the swords-and-sandals drama, entitled Spartacus: Vengeance, will go into production early next year, with executive producers Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Joshua Donen, and Steven S. DeKnight all returning for Season Two. [Editor: Look for former Dollhouse staffers Mo Tancharoen and Jed Whedon to also turn up on the writing staff for Season Two of Spartacus.] (Televisionary)

Mia Kirshner may well be among the dead of "The Vampire Diaries". Hours after Entertainment Weekly (EW) broke the news that the 34-year-old actress is joining the cast of The CW's popular series on a recurring basis, E! Online came out with a scoop suggesting that her character Isobel may not be alive.
Confirming EW's report that the star of "The L Word" will take on the role of the sweet-yet-dangerous wife of Alaric, E!'s Kristin Dos Santos reported that the actress' scenes won't take place in the present day. Instead, her part will be presented as flashbacks. Dos Santos, additionally, cited her sources as suggesting that Isobel "died at the hands of a main character" fans already know.
"The Vampire Diaries" was last seen gracing the small screen on November 19. It has since fallen into an 8-week hiatus. It will make its return with a new episode entitled

Now that "The L Word" has come to an end and her recurring role on "24" is not returning any sooner, Mia Kirshner has inked a deal with The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" to recur. The casting news which was broken by EW is topped by a hint from E! that says her character on the vampire series may not be alive after all.
Kirshner is slated to take the role of Isobel, the wife of Mystic Falls' new history teacher Alaric. The character is "sweet-yet-dangerous" and will be featured in flashback scenes. According to E!'s source, Isobel is already dead at the hands of "a main character we already know".
Kirshner's recurring appearance begins on January 21, meaning her part has probably been shot. The synopsis for the episode called "Bloodlines" is "Stefan and Damon's long lost sister, Maria comes for a visit and seeks revenge. It is up to

Can Matt Davis do a good Harrison Ford? How about a good Dexter Morgan?
We're about to find out on Vampire Diaries, because sources tell me there's much more to the casting news that just broke about Mia Kirshner (24, The L Word) joining the cast for a recurring role.
While it's true she's playing Isobel, the wife of Matt Davis' ridiculously named schoolteacher character Alaric, she might already not be of this world...
According to my sources, Kirshner will appear on the series beginning Jan. 21, but her scenes won't be in present-day. They will be in flashbacks because her character Isobel is already dead.
And you'll never guess who killed her. No really, go ahead,

While The Vampire Diaries has grown exceedingly handsome over the last few weeks - with the addition of guest stars Matthew Davis and Dillon Casey - the show is about to throw a beautiful bone to its male viewers.
Mia Kirshner has signed on for a recurring role on The CW hit, as sources confirm to Michael Ausiello she'll play Isobel, the wife of Davis' Alaric Saltzman.
The actress - who has enjoyed extended runs on 24 and The L Word - will debut on January 21, the date on which The Vampire Diaries returns from hiatus... and we know what you're thinking:
Yes, Alaric told Jenna his wife had passed away. Word is she'll be seen in flashbacks because she was killed... by a main character on the show!

In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004.)
From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired,
or disappointed us in 2009.
Last year, some of the category winners were chosen by both the AfterEllen.com staff and AfterEllen.com readers. This year, AfterEllen.com staff and contributing writers chose the winners for each category, as readers will be given the opportunity to vote on a wider range of topics and categories in our first annual Lesbian/Bi Women's Choice Awards in January.
Once again this year, we've included international people, shows and movies as a reflection of the increasing awareness of lesbian and bisexual visibility around the world made possible by the Internet.

2009 Year in Review: Television

In 2009, the number of leading lesbian characters on primetime broadcast TV doubled — from one to two.
Out of the estimated 600 lead and supporting characters on network TV, seven of them of are lesbian or bisexual. And of those seven, five of them kissed women last year. And of those five, three of them made out during Sweeps.
Things looked bleak at the beginning of the year, but with the growing trend of lesbian brides getting gunned down or cheating on their wedding days, and the continued trend of bisexual characters only expressing their same-sex attraction during Sweeps, and the loss of Showtime's lesbian drama The L Word, we're ending the year on a downward spiral in terms of lesbian visibility.

La Cucina is described as “a romantic drama about life, love and the joy of cooking.” But what you really need to know is that it marks the film debut of Mad Men’s beloved Joanie, Christina Hendricks. The cast also featuers Joaquim de Almeida (24), Rachel Hunter, and Leisha Hailey (The L Word). The DVD/Blu-Ray is out Jan. 12, but meanwhile you can see Christina drinking red wine and sexily eating some sort of potato chip in the trailer:

'Everybody's Fine' Too Cloying to Feel Authentic

Everybody's Fine seems tailor-made for those with big hearts, small brains, and a wad of tissues in their pockets. Despite a solid cast and strong source material, this remake of a 1990 film from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore quickly devolves into a mess of treacle and tears.
In the comedy-tinged drama, recently widowed Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) has lost touch with his grown children Amy (Kate Beckinsale), Rosie (Drew Barrymore), Robert (Sam Rockwell), and David (Austin Lysy), particularly since the death of his beloved wife. When everyone fails to show up for a family event at his home, Frank decides to head across the country to surprise each of his sons and daughters.
A trip to New York finds artist David absent from his downtown apartment, and Frank's other visits don't go much better. He is quickly shooed away from Amy's Chicago home, and his arrival in Robert's Denver doesn't last much longer.

AfterEllen.com recently caught up with 23-year-old Spanish TV star Celia Freijeiro to discuss her lesbian web series, Chica Busca Chica (Girl Seeks Girl). (Read our review of the series here.)
In Chica Busca Chica, Freijeiro plays Nines, a smooth-talking lothario who can make any woman fall prey to her slyly seductive ways.
In our email interview, Freijeiro talks about the ongoing struggle of finding funding and a distributor for the lesbian TV series in Spain, the onscreen chemistry between her beautiful cast mates and a sneak peek of what to expect in the future for Chica Busca Chica (warning: lesbian pregnancy storyline likely).

Review of "Chica Busca Chica" ("Girl Seeks Girl")

Since its debut in 2007, the web series Chica Busca Chica, or “girl seeks girl,” has emerged as “Spain’s answer to The L Word,” with its mostly lesbian cast, constant hookups and hilarious antics.
Indeed, Chica Busca Chica shares many similarities to one of the most well-known lesbian TV shows in America ― memorable characters, a focus on sex and relationships, and a cast of beautiful women. Yet the show lacks the exploration of serious issues in the Lgbt community that made the Showtime series so dramatic.
Still, Chica Busca Chica succeeds as a blithe comedy that
explores dating, cheating and lesbian life in present-day Madrid, and
it's now available in Spanish with English subtitles on DVD through Wolfe Video.
The show revolves around four major cast members: Nines the “Flirt” (Celia Freijeiro), Mónica the “Psycho” (Cristina Pons), Carmen the “Hetero” (Sandra Collantes), and Ana the “Newbie” (Almudena Gallego).

Have yourself a merry little Bealsmas. Make the Yuletide gay — or at the very least gayish. Jennifer Beals is getting her holiday on in a new Hallmark movie The Night Before the Night Before Christmas. Bette Porter going merry and bright for the Hallmark Movie Channel? I’m going to need a minute to readjust my understanding of the world.
Jennifer, who has a recurring role on the Fox drama Lie to Me, will appear in the holiday comedy about “a family that's too busy to get ready for the holidays until Santa Claus mistakenly leaves the North Pole a day early and crash lands on their roof, and it's suddenly up to the family to help save Christmas.” Oh, oh my. I can honestly say I have never looked at Jennifer and thought, look at Santa’s little helper — ever.

Exclusive Interview: Catching Up with Kristanna Loken

At its core, acting is really just a grand lie told in the name of entertainment. It’s a bit incongruous, then, that when actors walk off the stage, we expect the opposite from them: the truth. We want to know who they are and what they stand for — and Kristanna Loken is one of the few actors who tells us.
Loken, who publicly came out as bisexual four years ago, has appeared in T3: Rise of the Machines, Painkiller Jane and The L Word. She also starred in Lime Salted Love, an independent film that became available on DVD last month.
In this exclusive interview with AfterEllen.com, Loken opens up for the first time about her separation from husband Noah Danby and about the new love in her life.

Smallville Casting and TV Movie - Geoff Johns and Pam Grier Come to Smallville

Two news bombs dropped on the world of Smallville this week.
First, Pam Grier (The L Word) has been signed to play Amanda Waller On 'Smallville.' If you ever followed the Justice League animated series or the DC Universe, Amanda Waller is Big Brother personified. This may spell trouble for Clark and the Chloe-League (because let's face it, Chloe runs the show), but it should be a great boost in story arc depth on Smallville.
Secondly, brace yourselves, Geoff Johns is coming to Smallville. Yes, all you comic savants, the mastermind behind Blackest Night is attacking TV in a 'Super' way. The episodes will feature Stargirl, Hawkman and Dr. Fate. What, no third-smartest man, Mr. Terrific? He always seems to pop up. Aside from Hawkman these may appear to be odd choices overall, but Geoff Johns does pen Justice Society of America, which features the richer more complex,

The producers behind great queer-themed films like Boys Don't Cry and Hedwig and the Angry Inch are working with lesbian comic artist Ariel Schrag on the movie adaptation of her book, Potential. Killer Films (which is home to out producer Christine Vachon) are working with Ariel (who also used to write for The L Word) to create the film version of the 2000 comic/graphic novel, which chronicled her life as an out lesbian in the eleventh grade.
Queer writer and Sister Spit creator Michelle Tea posted an interview with Ariel on the Sfmoma blog today, giving us some insight into what's going on with the production of Potential. Ariel told Tea, "It’s moving along! We just got a great new producer, Jamin O’Brien. Rose Troche is directing and she’s amazing. I love working with her. We’re hoping to shoot this spring."

Smallville Casting News: Pam Grier is Agent Amanda Waller

EW's Michael Ausiello has broke that Pam Grier, fresh off her six year stint as Kit Porter on Showtime's The L Word (one of my guilty, guilty, Guilty pleasures), will step into the world of Smallville as DC Comic's ruthless villain with a badge, Agent Amanda Waller. Grier's stint will be for multiple episodes and will start with a two-parter called "Legends", which is a befitting title and introduction since the Waller character was introduced in the 1986 six issue DC crossover comic also entitled, Legends.
I remember Waller as a pain in the neck to the Justice League Unlimited on the Cartoon Network, because she always trumped whatever the heroes were trying to do if it was on an epic scale. I also remember her being integral to the creation of Bruce Wayne's "spawn" in Batman Beyond, which was so confusing that I won't drag you through that craziness at the this time.
