As we inch our way closer to the holiest of months, October, this final Tuesday of September boasts an eclectic array of genre-related home entertainment releases, including several great movies I fell in love with earlier this year: The Devil’s Candy, It Stains the Sands Red, and 47 Meters Down. Other notable releases for Tuesday, September 26th include After Midnight, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (in 4K), A Quiet Place in the Country, The Stake Land Collection, John Carpenter’s Escape from L.A. on Blu-ray,...

Paul Rudd is back together with his Role Models director David Wain for upcoming romantic comedy They Came Together and - as you'd expect from this particular duo with that particular title - it doesn't exactly stick to genre conventions. When Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler) meet, it's hate at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie candy shop. Plus, Joel is hung up on his sexy ex (Cobie Smulders). But amazingly, they fall in love, until they break up about two thirds of the way through, and Molly starts dating her accountant (Ed Helms). But then right at the end...well you'll just have to see. (Hint: Joel makes a big speech and they get back...

Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd are two comedians who can really do no wrong. Poehler did a bang-up job hosting the Golden Globes two years in a row (alongside celebrity gal pal Tina Fey), and she’s also the star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, one of the funniest shows on TV. And for his part, Rudd has toplined some hilarious films (Role Models and I Love You, Man come to mind), been an integral supporting player in others (Anchorman, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and has even done great work in dramas (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Prince Avalanche). The actor also has a little film called Ant-Man in the works. So, it’s safe to say that Poehler and Rudd are two of the funniest and most enjoyable performers around right now. This summer, they’ll share the screen in David Wain’s They Came Together – and we...

A fun new clip has been released for Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler's romantic comedy spoof, They Came Together. It features a scene between Rudd and co-star Jason Mantzoukas as they start horsing around in their office by tossing a little football to each other. Things don't turn out too well for them with this foolishness.
The movie comes from director David Wain, who also brought us Wet Hot American Summer and Wanderlust. As far as the comedy style goes, there were more hits than misses. For a spoof movie, They Came Together was actually pretty funny.

If you were to go by the headlines promoting this new trailer for They Came Together, the new David Wain (Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer) movie, you'd expect something "funny" and "hilarious". Mmmmmmkay... Starring Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd, the film is not your stereotypical romantic comedy, it's actually mocking said stereotypes by wedging as many rom-com cliches into its 85-minute running time as possible. Perhaps I'm just not getting it based on the trailer or I just don't have a funny bone, but I didn't laugh once or even chuckle, nor did it suggest to me this is something I might enjoy, and Wain is okay in my book, even though Wanderlust was a steaming pile. Along with Poehler and Rudd in the lead roles, the film is stacked to the brim with recognizable names including Ed Helms, Michael Ian Black, Cobie Smulders, Ken Marino, Jack McBrayer and...

Here's the first fun trailer for Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler's new romantic comedy spoof They Came Together. I got to watch this movie up at Sundance earlier this year, and for the most part I enjoyed it. I don't really care for spoofs, but this one worked much better than many of the others that have been made over the years. I do have to say that Rudd was the best part of this movie. That guy is just likable and freakin' funny. You can read my review for the film here, and this is the synopsis:
They Came Together relates the epic love story of Joel, a corporate executive for Candy Systems and Research, a mega candy store chain, and Molly, the owner of a small sweet shop called Upper Sweet Side. When Joel is tasked with shutting down Molly’s mom-and-pop operation, the unlikely lovers find...

After splitting sides at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the romantic comedy parody They Came Together starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, is finally coming to theaters this summer, and the first trailer has arrived to show off the goods. Along with some huge laughs, there's also glimpses of the incredible supporting cast that includes Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Cobie Smulders, Max Greenfield, Christopher Meloni and a whole slew of hilarious cameos. Director and comedian David Wain has hit a home run with a parody that calls back to classics like Airplane and Young Frankenstein. Watch the trailer! Here's the first trailer for David Wain's They Came Together, originally from BuzzFeed (via Film Stage): They Came Together is directed by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer), who co-wrote the film with Michael Showalter (The Baxter). The film tells the love story of Joel (Paul Rudd), a...

Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in David Wain’s “They Came Together”
They Came Together
Written by David Wain and Michael Showalter
Directed by David Wain
USA, 2014
Molly (Amy Poehler) and Joel (Paul Rudd) are likable singles who reside in New York that we immediately want to get together and stay together but beyond the initial thrills of seeing them meet, the material of David Wain’s They Came Together soon turns disappointingly repetitive. Mimicking The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, Molly’s small candy business goes up against Joel’s employer- the Corporate Candy Company. They have direct personal conflicts with each other but there is an undeniable pull of attraction between them that can’t be ignored. From ridiculing falling-in-love montages to klutzy bumblings on dates, this film in no way approaches the absolute zaniness of the best of Wain’s previous achievement with...

The course of true love never runs smoothly for everyone, but the premise of the new romantic comedy They Came Together sounds suspiciously familiar. Molly (Amy Poehler) is a slightly kooky, ditzy blonde thirty-something who somehow manages to maintain a pastel-coated candy store on New York’s Lower West Side, helpfully handing out her wares for free to the local community; such is her instinctive generosity. Meanwhile, Joel (Paul Rudd) is a likeable, easygoing dude who happens to be seeing the secretly slutty Tiffany (Cobie Smulders), who’s clandestinely sleeping with his professional nemesis and central opponent on the corporate ladder at the Corporate Candy Company, a heartless, profit-devouring corporation looking to utterly dominate the confectionary retail market and crush all competition. (You can probably guess where the narrative conflict is coming.) Both leads have...

I'm a big fan of Paul Rudd, so one of the movies I was excited to see at Sundance this year was the romantic comedy spoof The Came Together. I'm don't really care for spoofs. I think they are a waste of time and money. For the most part they suck and aren't funny. I was really hoping for a smart comedy with They Came Together, and thankfully, it was actually funny! I laughed a lot throughout the film, but some pretty stupid moments that the movie didn't need were scattered throughout. Sometimes less is more, especially with a comedy like this.
The movie follows the typical romantic comedy template of a couple who meet and hate each other at first, but through the course of the story realize that they were meant to be together. I thought it was great that Rudd played the male lead in the film...

Returning behind the camera for his follow-up feature to 2012’s Wanderlust, David Wain is about to share with the world his latest comedy, They Came Together, at Sundance later this month.
The film reunites him with a slew of past collaborators, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler leading the charge in the romantic-comedy with a spoof twist, a blend not often seen on the big screen at all.
Ahead of its debut at Sundance in a week and a half’s time, the first clip and poster have debuted over on BuzzFeed, giving a great first look at the kind of comedy we can expect.
