In John McPhail’s gorehound musical “Anna and the Apocalypse,” one of the standout world premieres at this year’s Fantastic Fest, our high school heroine (Ella Hunt) sleeps through the start of a worldwide zombie attack, slips on her headphones, steps out her front door, and begins to sing. “It’s a beautiful day!” belts Anna. Behind her, one neighbor dies, another falls out of a window, and as the camera pulls back, we see her small Scottish town is on fire. Yesterday, her dad (Mark Benton), the school janitor, found out she’s skipping college for a gap year in Australia, the class bully Nick (Ben Wiggins) propositioned her in the cafeteria, and her dorky best friend John (Malcolm Cumming) nearly lost his job when he accidentally thwacked their co-worker with a bowling shoe. Today, she dances down the street, swinging on light poles like Gene Kelly, totally...

Mandy Moore is on a (professional and personal) roll. Not only is the This is Us star gearing up for the Emmys (her show has five nominations), she’s eyeing a serious return to music (squeal!) and is in this midst of building a home with boyfriend of two years, Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith. But she’s adding another sweet deal to her pretty full plate, partnering with Garnier as its new spokeswoman.

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

Bob Odenkirk's 30-plus-year career has included a stint as an SNL writer, a groundbreaking sketch series (Mr. Show), stand-up comedy, and, most recently, Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel in which he gives a brilliant performance as "morally flexible" lawyer Jimmy McGill. And how has the 54-year-old actor's outlook changed over that three-decade span? "As a young man I was the fuckin' expert on comedy, on who was funny and who wasn't funny and who's a douchebag," he says. "I still feel those things but I don't think I'm so right.

Two Very Different Movies Look to Divide Up the Weekend Box Office Business
With Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continuing to dominate at the box office with $90 million this past weekend, and Saban’s Power Rangers (Lionsgate) also doing exceedingly well with $40 million in second place, you wouldn’t think anyone would try to release a movie that might get overshadowed by those two blockbusters.
That said, what’s interesting about this weekend is the fact there are two very different movies that are competing very heavily for second place with DreamWorks Animation’s latest animated family film, The Boss Baby (20th Century Fox), taking on the live action English remake of Ghost In The Shell (Paramount), starring Scarlett Johansson. Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Mindy Project’s Season 5 finale.
The Mindy Project wrapped its fifth season Tuesday with an episode that found Dr. Lahiri (again) making a decision she’ll likely come to regret about a(nother) guy who has become important(ish) in her life but who will (likely) be gone by the next time her Bff Peter rolls into town. If all of this sounds familiar, it’s because it’s ground the Hulu comedy has covered so many times since its debut. And it leaves this former fan with a sad question:

This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Amy HeckerlingThe films of Amy Heckerling reveal a heart guarded and tender, a penchant for the past without a whiff of the maudlin. Who could forget her debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Directed from Cameron Crowe's script, the 1982 film gave us frank portrayals of sexuality and the detailed minutiae of growing up, suspended in the hazy tedium of high school, all without condescension or patronizing. Totally righteous. Heckerling proved attuned to the particulars of comedy with her next feature Johnny Dangerously (1984), a waggish send-up of the 1930s gangster comedy. In its cheeky beginning, a 1935 title card reveals itself to be a real material object that crumbles when car crash obliterates its façade. With a darkened lash line, a young Michael Keaton puts forth his best James Cagney as the titular mobster whose identity and status are known to all but his ailing ma and brother, a rising assistant Da.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" starlet Daisy Ridley has reportedly booked her next project, and she'll be working with a familiar face.
TheWrap reports that Ridley will re-team with her "Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams for the thriller "Kolma," a remake of the Israeli film "All I've Got." Ridley will star, and Abrams will produce through his Bad Robot banner.
According to the trade, the flick has an unusual fantasy element. Here's how the 2003 original plays out:
Described as a cross between a loftier, more mystical version of "The Notebook" and Albert Brooks' 1991 fantasy romance "Defending Your Life," the project follows a young couple who get in a car accident that leaves the man dead. Decades later, the old woman must choose whether to reunite with her long-lost love in the afterlife or return to the fateful day her life changed forever.
TheWrap cautions that this logline could change in the remake,...

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

So here we are, smack dab in the middle of the dog days of summer (and if you don’t get that little saying, try lying out on the sidewalk in 100-degree heat for 15 minutes or so, like Fido does, and see if a light bulb doesn’t go off). The dogs are often howling in movie theaters too—at times it seems as though August has replaced January in the hearts of moviegoers as the dumping ground for pictures not really worthy of our attention (or a serious investment in the marketing department). Movies like Pixels and Fantastic Four have their perverse fascination—just how bad can they possibly be? Both were greeted with reviews so scathing and unyielding in their acidity that studio heads can only pray nothing in October, November or December will be perceived as worse, and I have to admit a certain curiosity. But that...

Well, it's finally August, and while the summer movie season isn't completely over it might as well be. This article was a difficult one to put together, because there just isn't much to recommend this month. But you know what, that's okay, I think I managed to pull together five solid titles for the "must-see" section, and lucky for us the fall festival season is just around the corner, which means things are about to heat up exponentially on the prestige movie front just in time to compensate for things cooling down outside as the seasons change. (I should note here, it is currently 106 degrees fahrenheit here in the desert, and the thought of things cooling down is marvelous, but also very premature.) We are coming off what turned out to be a pretty solid month last month, in my opinion, as I settled back into my routine after a...

Don't be put off by its glib, teen-oriented title, E4's My Mad Fat Diary was brilliantly funny, well-written, proper human drama...
As an outsider looking in, My Mad Fat Diary never appeared to be selling what I wanted to buy. Bowing to the logic that anyone who zanily declares ‘I’m mad, me!’ in real life deserves to be given a wide berth, its big, fat gypsy-wedding-alike title didn’t appeal.
Neither did its teen-skewed content, or as much of it as I’d glimpsed from E4’s promos. Cheesy love triangles and mooning over pop stars? Not for me. And that goes double for shows that get their laughs by insulting characters for not conforming to the rules of conventional telly attractiveness. Move along, please. Not interested.
As My Mad Fat Diary approached its final series though, I witnessed something puzzling. People were preparing themselves for bereavement. Fans...

Big Brother's Jade Lynch and Cristian Mjc have been involved in a loud argument, after Jade was put up for eviction.
The Bunker housemates decided between them over dinner that Jade would join Harry Amelia Martin, Chloe Wilburn and Cristian in facing the public vote.
In highlights airing tonight (June 18), Jade is annoyed by accusations that she is a bed-hopper in the aftermath of the nomination.
"I've never kissed anyone in this house [before Brian Belo], and I do really like Brian," she states.
Danny Wisker argues: "I feel like you've gone from guy to guy, who you think at that moment are the hot topic."
Nick Henderson defends Jade, saying that Brian is the only one whom she's expressed an attraction to that was more than friendship.
But Cristian believes Jade has been flirting with him, and says to Jade: "You're the biggest game player in this entire process. The biggest game player.

Last night's (June 13) highlights show gave us our first proper glimpse inside of the Big Brother Timebomb Bunker, and with tensions already rising between Helen Wood and Nikki Grahame, it looks like things won't remain calm for long.
We also saw the housemates react to Marc O'Neill's eviction, oblivious to the fact that their words may come back to haunt them when Marc and the legendary housemates return to the main house tonight.
But who entertained us with their behaviour, and who needs to change their game plan? Read on for our daily verdict.
Good Day
Nikki Grahame
Okay, so she's not technically a proper housemate, but with so much of last night's action focusing on the Bunker, we thought Nikki deserved a place in our Good Day category for entertainment value alone.
It may have been nine years since Nikki originally entered the Big Brother house, but it's clear she hasn't changed a bit.

If Marc O'Neill was hoping for a quiet few days in Big Brother's Timebomb Bunker, he may not be in luck, as tension between Nikki Grahame and Helen Wood is already rising.
Things started off quite civilly when Marc joined legendary housemates Brian Belo, Nikki and Helen in a secret room, with the two girls agreeing that they're not impressed with Harry Amelia Martin's behaviour in the house.
"Ughhh get your burgers away," said Helen as they watched Harry get undressed on a monitor. Nikki added: "She thinks she is so desirable."
However, when Helen went to the Diary Room, Nikki took the opportunity to start asking Marc a few questions, and when he suggested they could talk in a few minutes, Nikki replied: "No, as Helen will be back and I won't be able to fit a word in."

You have to give a bit of applause to Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner for being in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. It isn’t that it’s good, because it really isn’t, but it’s a fun, family-friendly effort that aims at making kids laugh.
In the world of movies geared towards younger audiences, there are two camps – those that have some appeal to older audiences as well, and those that really, really don’t. This one is squarely in the latter camp, which actually makes it hard to judge.
Sure, it’s fairly stupid, but it isn’t precisely because it thinks you’re stupid (or kids are). It’s just that if you’re young, you’re easier to get a laugh out of, and things like getting kicked by a kangaroo are hilarious.
While the film manages a decent story,...

Angelina Jolie made the brave decision to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure. In an op-ed for The New York Times published Tuesday, titled "Diary of a Surgery," the actress-director explained that she had the surgery last week because she carries a gene that gave her a 50 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer. Jolie had a preventive double mastectomy in 2013 to reduce her risk of getting breast cancer. The Unbroken director–who lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to ovarian cancer–received a phone call from her doctor two weeks ago with results from a recent blood test. The test showed markers that could be a sign of early cancer. "I went...

Netflix came to this year’s Sundance Film Festival as the digital spoiler, ready to spend more than traditional studios to lure the top indie movies away from theatrical distribution – but so far they haven’t spoiled a thing, as the big acquisitions in a healthy market have mainly gone to the usual distribution suspects.
Multiple dealmakers have told TheWrap that Netflix came to Sundance with a specific strategy to outbid the other studios for movies in an attempt to build a track record as a buyer of major festival titles. A longtime supporter of independent film, Netflix has been...

Justin Bieber made a lot of Beliebers happy on Wednesday by sharing new music on his Instagram account! But, the lyrics to one of the songs has fans wondering if the ballad is about his break-up with Selena Gomez.
In the 15-second snippet, Justin croons, “When it's raining, it's pouring / How do I always end up the enemy? / How do I wake up in the morning and you're not right next to me? / How did we throw it all away?"
Watch the video above to hear the heartbreaking song.

The other teaser The Biebs posted is a bit more vague, although if we had to guess, the slowed-down tune is about his religious beliefs.

With Michael Keaton winning the Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy and Eddie Redmayne winning for best actor in a drama, both men continue establishing themselves as the frontrunners in this year’s lead actor race at the Oscars.
Though not new to films, Redmayne starred in Oscar-nominated films such as Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2008) and Les Miserables (2012). His performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, however, propelled him to widespread acclaim and put him on the radar. He is one of four best actor nominees — along with Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch and Steve Carell — to receive their first nomination this year.
For most of his career, Keaton was known for his comedic roles, such as Mr. Mom (1983) and Beetlejuice (1988), and for his turn as Batman in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). These roles earned Keaton praise and...

She’s just being Miley!
While Beliebers all over the world are drooling over Justin Bieber’s new Calvin Klein campaign, Miley Cyrus is poking fun at her old pal… and it’s pretty hilarious!
The “Wrecking Ball” singer uploaded one of The Biebs’ Ck ads to her Instagram – complete with her own Photoshop magic. Miley covered up the female model’s face with a funny photo of herself to look like she is holding on to Justin’s shirtless chest.
If you look closely, Mi-Cy’s pic also has a little message on the photo right under the Calvin Klein logo on Justin’s underwear. Zoom in nice and close and you’ll see that it says “@MileyIsMyQueenBitches” – whether this was Miley’s doing or a funny fan’s creation is unclear – but like we said, pretty comical. Hours later, she uploaded a second Photoshopped shot of Jb from his Ck campaign.

The Sundance Film Institute announced the U.S. dramatic, world dramatic, U.S. documentary, world documentary and Next selections for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival today. The premier film festival in the United States, Sundance is coming off a banner 2014 edition that brought films earning year-end kudos such as "Whiplash," "Boyhood," "Dear White People," "Obvious Child" and "The Skeleton Twins" into the world. The 2015 slate just looks just as intriguing and, according to the festival, perhaps more emotional and challenging. In a statement from the Institute, the festival's director, John Cooper, remarked, "The selections for our 2015 Festival will take audiences on a wild ride of emotional extremes. With approaches ranging from comedic to dramatic, genre to documentary, experimental to short, independent filmmakers are bravely illuminating new opportunities for understanding and empathy.” Festival founder and cinema icon Robert Redford added, "The work of independent artists inevitably reflects the state of our culture...

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. In a festival whose dedication to celluloid is readily apparent, why not declare it directly? And so one of the Vienna International Film Festival's Special Programs this year is a bastion of that most wonderful format, 16mm film. Programmed by Katja Wiederspahn and Haden Guest with an admirably variegated range, the programs were gathered around collective films, war films, sex films, expanded cinema, and more. Key to the section's expanse, which begins in the 1920s and touches every decade between here and there, is also in highlighting new work done in this increasingly outmoded, "out of date," and unprojectionable format.
