Ridley Scott & Universal Unleash Robin Hood Trailer

16 December 2009 3:55 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Haven’t heard much about Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood for a while, perhaps it’s been lost amidst the buzz of Ridley’s myriad other projects — including the Monopoly Movie, an Alien prequel, etc.  Anyway, Universal’s released a teaser trailer, available via TrailerAddict.

Universal promises ‘the true story behind the legend’ — a strategy that worked wonder’s for Antoine Fuqua’s magnum opus, King Arthur, five years ago (wow, has it really been that long?).  Scripted by Brian Helgeland, there’s plenty of room for optimism when one looks at the strong cast Scott’s assembled (Mark StrongDanny HustonCate Blanchett!) to back Russell Crowe. The notion is also made exciting by Scott’s recent track record with historical epics (if you haven’t seen the Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven, you honestly haven’t seen the film).

Anything that postpones Monopoly is fine with us. …

Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe reteam in new 'Robin Hood' trailer

15 December 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

I know that we're all supposed to harumph and say we hate "Gladiator" these days, at least based on the way the fanboy nation reacts every time it's mentioned, but forget that.  I loved "Gladiator" when it came out and I still think it's one of the most acutely entertaining moments of Ridley Scott's career. I'm also on record as being a huge fan of the director's cut of "Kingdom Of Heaven," a film that was mistreated to a disturbing extent during its theatrical run.  Fox shot themselves in the foot on that one, because the shortre theatrical cut deserved to …

When the World Needs Robin Hood, We Get Gladiator 2

15 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

If ever there was an apt time for a Robin Hood movie, it’s now. With unrepentant financial institutions back in full force, and Washington refusing to regulate Wall Street’s extravagance, we could use a hero who steals from the rich, gives to the poor, and thumbs his nose at the law. But we’ll leave it to Oliver Stone to give the titans of finance their comeuppance in Wall Street 2, because that’s not how Universal seems to be marketing Ridley Scott’s upcoming Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe. Instead, they are essentially selling it as a sequel to Crowe and Scott’s 2000 collaboration, Gladiator. (The abundance of chainmail and coats of arms also recalls Scott’s 2005 crusades film, Kingdom of Heaven, set during the same period.) Check out the new teaser trailer and compare the number of elements we recognized from Gladiator to those identified with Robin Hood. …

New 'Robin Hood' Photos & Trailer -- No Tights in Sight!

15 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Update: The trailer has just arrived over on Apple.

Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly what a day. Hours after the Australian Courier Mail ran the first official Robin Hood photos, Universal released the first trailer from Ridley Scott's renamed epic.

First, let's talk about the trailer. I've had very high hopes for Robin Hood, but they've been lowered a notch or twelve with the teaser. It looks like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven had a baby, and named it Robin Hood. Whether or not that will turn into a definitive version of the legend, a cool medieval action movie, or an annoying hodgepodge of medievalism will be revealed next year. But for now, it's somewhere between "cool" and "medieval mess." I'm not sure why so many directors seem to fumble when it comes to setting anything in the medieval world. Yes, they wore odd clothing, were steeped in mysticism, and had poor food and sanitation, …

Mel Gibson To Direct, DiCaprio To Star In Viking Epic

15 December 2009 4:18 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Mel Gibson has signed on to direct an as-yet-untitled Viking epic, to be scripted by The Departed/Kingdom of Heaven/Body of Lies scribe William MonahanLeonardo DiCaprio has signed on to star. Graham King, producer of Gibson’s upcoming films, Edge of Darkness and The Departed, is financing the film through his production shingle, Gk Films, partnered with Gibson’s own Icon Productions.  All that is known about the story of the film is that is is a drama set in the Viking world, and that Leo will most assuredly play a Viking in the piece.

From Graham King’s lips to God’s ears:

“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill.”

Hop to the source for a nice shot of Mel Gibson

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood Trailer

15 December 2009 1:42 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Not since Watchmen have I seen this much slow motion in a trailer. Say hello to the first ever teaser for Ridley Scott.s Robin Hood, courtesy of our wily cousins up north, the Canadians. Yep, it.s an international trailer which means we.re likely to get a second version for me and my fellow domestics soon. I hope they speed that one up. More than anything Robin Hood looks like Ridley.s last attempt at a sword and armor movie, Kingdom of Heaven. If you saw it, you know that.s not a good thing. But it has Russell Crowe who, almost inherently, kicks all kinds of ass. Well except in that other Ridley Scott movie where he mostly sat around drinking wine all day. Whoops. Gladiator has never seemed so far away. Check out the international trailer for Robin Hood below: <!-- …

First Trailer and New Images from Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood Starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett

14 December 2009 10:37 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The first trailer for Ridley Scott Robin Hood has come online and it looks like Universal is going to sell the film as Gladiator in medieval times.  I would say it looks like Kingdom of Heaven in England instead of Jerusalem.  Either way, you can’t sell a period action movie without rock music and the teaser rocks hard.  In all honesty, it’s not a bad trailer and I do like that it has almost no dialogue.

Some new images have landed online as well and they look a lot like what you would expect a “Robin Hood” movie to look like.  There’s horses, and corsets, and swords, and leather clothing, but in the context of a medieval time period and not a kinky sex club.    The images also give us the first real look at Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian and again, no surprised.  My big anxiety …

Russell Crowe Kicks Ass in Ridley Scott's 'Robin Hood' Trailer!

14 December 2009 9:35 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The international trailer for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood has broken cover thanks to ComingSoon.net and Tribute.ca…and you can watch the ComingSoon version using the embedded player at the bottom of this page.

The film looks solid, like so many of Scott's other period pieces; I'm thinking in particular of Gladiator and the truly magnificent Kingdom of Heaven.

At 72, Scott is an inspiration to the rest of us young whippersnappers—he still cranks out the occasional epic magnum opus, and this looks to be just that.

Meanwhile, the Courier-Mail has debuted eight new photos from the film, including the one to your left, and the one below.

Here's the story's synopsis (as if most of us couldn't have guessed much of it):

In 13th century England, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against …

Robin Hood trailer

Few films earn my immediate attention like a Ridley Scott film... especially when the film involves horses, swords, and Russell Crowe in total gon'-f*ck-shit-up mode. Below is our first look at the trailer for Robin Hood. And I think as we've all suspected from the get-go, it heavily recalls Scott's Kingdom Of Heaven and Gladiator (and I don't know, there's even a little something of Legend there to me). The 72-year-old British director obviously knows how to make these types of films in …

Gibson And DiCaprio Possibly Teaming For Viking Movie

14 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

According to Variety, the movie likely to be Mel Gibson’s next directorial effort will be a viking story, written by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven), and starring once and future heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s really early in the process to be saying this – as Gibson is finishing up The Beaver with Jodie Foster, and DiCaprio just finished principal photography on Christopher Nolan’s Inception – but I got pretty excited when I read the headline to the story.

Of course, I initially had hoped that maybe Gibson was going to star in the movie as well, but he’s done well enough with the period movies where he was just behind the camera (Apocalypto). Monahan, has been on a steady role since breaking in, with KoH being his first credited feature writing gig. He also scripted the soon to be released Martin Campbell, Mel Gibson starring movie Edge of Darkness. …

Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in Mel Gibson-Directed Viking Epic

14 December 2009 6:21 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Mel Gibson has finally announced plans for his next gig behind the camera, and after seeing Apocalypto, I can honestly say I'm ready to follow him just about anywhere. Fortunately, this sounds like it is definitely in the same vein as most of Mel's previous directorial work. According to Variety [1], he will be teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio for "an untitled period drama set in the world of Viking culture". Sold! The script for the film is being written by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven), who also recently co-wrote Gibson's latest starring vehicle, Edge of Darkness. They are hoping to start shooting next fall, and the project will be financed independently, seeking distribution after the fact in order to avoid studio meddling. There have been a handful of Viking-related movies coming out lately, some of which were decent (Outlander) and some of which were not (Pathfinder, Severed Ways: …

DiCaprio is Mel Gibson’s Viking

14 December 2009 5:26 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

If Mel Gibson is truly planning a return to the limelight, who better to cast as his leading man than Leonardo DiCaprio?

That’s exactly what’s happening, because Gibson has signed on to direct an untitled drama about Vikings that will star DiCaprio, scripted by William Monahan. You might know Monahan as the screenwriter of The Departed, Body of Lies and Kingdom of Heaven.

If DiCaprio isn’t the first face that pops into your head when you think of Vikings, then you’re not alone — which tells me Gibson and Monahan are likely going for a different take on Nordic culture. The film will begin shooting in fall of 2010, outside of the studio system.

Currently, details are sparse regarding ‘Viking’, but DiCaprio has apparently long been fascinated with the culture and is set to play a Viking “in a storyline that will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts. …

Words on the street are, Orlando Bloom has been secretly engaged to his Victoria's Secret model girlfriend Miranda Kerr. The 32-year-old actor has, according to Women's Day magazine, asked the 26-year-old's hand in marriage late November when the two were in Morocco, Africa for the reopening of the famous hotel La Mamounia.

Spilling the bean on the secret engagement was Matthew, the brother of the Australian model, during a party in Queensland in early December. "He's finally done it - Orlando has proposed," Matthew claimed. "They're getting married." He further mentioned that Miranda will wait until after she returns from her David Jones' fashion shoot in New Zealand for the official announcement.

Orlando Bloom has been romancing Miranda Kerr since 2007. Before this engagement news surfaced, the pair has been reported to go through a rocky patch as the lead man of "Kingdom of Heaven" was linked to Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston. …

Brad Pitt To Produce Dracula Film

7 December 2009 2:57 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Vampire are so popular popular now, it seems they’re bigger than The Beatles – and Jesus. Their box office clout and appeal has been rather staggering of late. So much so Brad Pitt’s production outfit is teaming up with Summit Entertainment to go back to the original number one. No, not Count Dracula, but Vlad Tepes: the infamous inspiration for Bram Stoker’s novel and countless films.

The script by actor Charlie Hunnam is being directed by music video director Anthony Mandler, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Details remain sketchy at present. Summit Entertainment purchased the script a while ago, and obviously buoyed by the phenomenon called Twilight and its sequels, wish to go ahead with it.

The creative team describe their wish to produce: “a visually edgy and radical period movie.” Whether they manage it is anybody’s guess. The story of Vlad Tepes is more than lurid …

How Hollywood destroyed our classical legends

3 December 2009 2:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It took a millennium for western civilisation to create a canon of classical literature – but just 10 years for Hollywood to destroy it

When I think back on this decade's spate of movies based on the great legends of European history, I remember how fantastically it started – with Gladiator – and how badly things went downhill after that: with Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, 300 and Beowulf. When I saw Gladiator in 2000, I thought this was going to be just the best millennium ever. It had everything you could want in a movie: glory, gore, guts, gladiators. It was a sweeping epic with a computer-generated cast of thousands. Augustus Caesar would have been proud of it. Julius and Tiberius, too.

Yet the thing I liked most about Ridley Scott's superb film was how closely it hewed to the historical record, in its portrayal of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) as the depraved son of Marcus Aurelius, …

Cracks – Alex’s Review

“What’s the most important thing in life?”

Don’t answer yet! Think about it very carefully first.

After all, it’s a pretty big question. In fact, do they come any bigger? Probably not and yet for a group of young girls growing up in 1934. The answer might be quite simple. A husband, security, money, a nice house, kids. All the basic things a young woman was told to aspire to back in the 30s.

However, for a group of girls being taught at a school by Miss G these are the very things to avoid.

The glamorous young teacher fills her diving lessons with instructions on rebellion, the wonders of travel, of becoming strong and independent. Have adventures and make sure you answer to nobody but yourself is her message. The group hang on her every word and head girl Di (Juno Temple) is especially hypnotised by her teachers’ charms. …

'Call of Duty' Movie Talk Highlights Kevin McKidd's Sense of Humor

18 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I'm already a big Kevin McKidd fan from his work on television shows like Rome and the woefully under-seen Journeyman, as well as his turns in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven and Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers, but his comments on the increasing possibility of a Call of Duty film have made me love the actor even more. For those who weren't in line at midnight for the recent launch of the latest CoD entry, Modern Warfare 2, you should know that Call of Duty is a first-person-shooter video game series that started off during World War II but has since spread its settings throughout the last hundred or so years of combat.

A few months ago Activision, the game's publisher, filed for a Call of Duty movie-related trademark, hinting that they were planning on kick-starting a film franchise as well. After the $550 millon success of Modern Warfare 2, the New …
