Sony Pictures Classics and IFC Films are each mounting major promotional and advertising campaigns in hopes of garnering Oscar nominations for their respective films, Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) and Alfonso Cuarón's Y Tu Mamá También -- even though neither film has been submitted for Best Foreign Language Film, the New York Daily News reported today (Monday). Both companies are reportedly pushing their films for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay nods, despite controversial Oscar selections by the government of Spain, which reportedly objected to the sympathetic portrayal of a rapist in the Almodóvar film (it chose Mondays in the Sun, about unemployed dockworkers), and the government of Mexico, which reportedly objected to graphic sex scenes in the Cuarón film (it chose The Crime of Father Amaro, which has been blasted by Catholic groups).
