The upcoming MCU project ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ has garnered significant attention, driven both by fan excitement and production challenges. Issues ranging from the SAG-AFTRA strike to disagreements between showrunners and the studio have impacted its development.
Despite these hurdles, it was announced that the new iteration of the show would closely tie in with the original Netflix series, with several actors reprising their roles. Charlie Cox returns as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, the Punisher. Margarita Levieva portrays Heather Glenn, a love interest of Matt Murdock, while Michael Gandolfini appears as Daniel Blade. Sandrine Holt takes on the role of Vanessa Fisk, Wilson Fisk’s wife. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is one of the most talked-about upcoming MCU projects, partly due to the fan-fueled hype and partly due to its turbulent production that’s been plagued with everything from SAG-AFTRA strike to creative differences in what the showrunners wanted and what the studio wanted.
Later it was announced that the new version of the show would be more akin to the continuation of the original Netflix series, with many actors reprising their roles. Carlie Cox will return to reprise his role as Daredevil, and D’Onofrio will reprise his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Jon Bernthal will portray Frank Castle, aka the Punisher. Margarita Levieva plays Heather Glenn, a love interest of Matt Murdock. Michael Gandolfini appears as Daniel Blade, while Sandrine Holt portrays Vanessa Fisk, Wilson Fisk’s wife. Nikki M. James takes on the role of Kirsten McDuffie, and Genneya Walton plays Bb Urich, a young journalist.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at The National's I Am Easy to Find, by Mike Mills. Mike Mills might be foremost known as a feature film director to the readers of ScreenAnarchy. His film 20th Century Women is considered a favorite among many lovers of modern American independent cinema, and his films Thumbsucker, Beginners and C'mon, C'mon all have their defenders too. Thing is: Mike Mills is a man of many occupations, in all of which he has had some singular stand-outs. For instance: before he became well known as a film director, he was a famous graphic designer, especially of album sleeves. His covers for Air's Moon Safari...

World premiering at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival, C’mon C’mon is Mike Mill‘s fourth feature film following Thumbsucker (2005), Beginners (2010) and 20th Century Women (2016). Something of a cross between Michael Apted’s 7 Up Series for its affectionate and anthropological approach to documenting children’s inner thoughts, and perhaps 70s and 80s Woody Allen for capturing the timeless and restlessness qualities of New York City, it’s a also a bittersweet look at the highs and occasional lows/woes of parenting. Joaquin Phoenix joined the project early on and it was shot primarily in New York, but includes the backdrops of New Orleans, Los Angeles and Detroit as well.…...

No movie star is quite like Keanu Reeves. An A-lister who has a trio of franchises to his name, all of which have become or are in the process of becoming trilogies, he walks between worlds with ease. An action hero, but also a part of a beloved comedy franchise, Reeves doesn’t fit into any one particular box. With the release this weekend of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, now seemed like a perfect time to look at the actor. Reeves is a big star in Hollywood, though one who doesn’t do things quite like anyone else. He very much follows the beat of his own drummer. It’s certainly worked for him, as this spotlight today will highlight. Reeves got his start on television, though he quickly made the jump to film with Youngblood. Soon after came River’s Edge, along with his first high profile movie in Dangerous Liaisons.

"Could she run forever?" When musicians and filmmakers collaborate and end up working in sync, we end up with something beautiful. I Am Easy to Find is a new short film / music video written and directed by the very talented filmmaker Mike Mills. This 24-minute B&W short film stars Alicia Vikander and captures an entire life in 164 moments. It's inspired by an "artsy fartsy French film" (which was not revealed) and became something greater once Mills started shooting. "Built on the fragmented style of memory-filled detours found in Beginners and 20th Century Women, Mills charts the entire life of Vikander's nameless character through these fleeting 164 moments." It's deeply moving to watch an entire life go by from start to finish in 24 minutes, and Vikander makes it all the more convincing. You can also watch this video with Mills' Directors' Commentary here for more context. The outlandish debut feature from writer/producer Robert Scott Wildes, “Poor Boy,” debuted in the Viewpoints section of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, then disappeared back into the editing room. But thanks to distributor Indican Pictures (“The Boondock Saints”) — which acquired the feature at last month’s Cannes Film Market — theater-goers will soon be able to watch two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon’s turn as a dispirited rodeo clown.
In a supporting role, Shannon plays the father of the film’s thieving protagonists, Romeo/”Prickface” Griggs and Samson Griggs, residents of a boat in the middle of the desert. The wanted brothers loot everything from lawnmowers to cameras, and supplement their income by convincing people to bet on rigged volleyball games. Annette Bening gives a fine central performance but this kooky comedy suffers badly from unfocused direction and an unmistakable air of self-indulgence
With tender, personal movies such as Thumbsucker (2005) and Beginners (2010), director Mike Mills has tested taboos and shed light on family, identity and masculinity. His quirkily intimate work has always needed a certain level of indulgence and in the past I’ve been happy to give it. But 20th Century Women tests this tolerance to breaking point. Annette Bening is well cast, and gives a well judged performance, a variation on her uptight and self-questioning mom from American Beauty. However, the film is exasperatingly supercilious and smug – unfocused, self-consciously cute, nostalgic and empathetic, but never properly funny. It feels like someone else’s long therapy session.
The setting is Santa Monica, 1979, and Dorothea (Bening) is a fiftysomething single mother with bold progressive instincts. She is bringing up her teenage...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Poignant and hilarious and wise, a melancholy ode to a moment when the world was changing for women (and men)… and how it still and always is. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Sex, some, though more awkwardness and regrets than action. Not much in the way of drugs; just some beer, oh, and lots of cigarettes; it has several points to make about cigarettes, actually. Rock ’n’ roll, definitely: an ongoing battle between punk and “art fag” music (think: Talking Heads).
Plenty of talk about women’s orgasms, which — hey! — 20th Century Women reminds us does not automatically fall under the Sex heading the way it does for men. And a scene around a dinner table in which menstruation and painful virginity-losing is discussed,...

After exploring a teenager’s odd obsession in Thumbsucker and helming the semi-autographical Beginners about his father coming out of the closet late in laugh, in his third narrative, Mike Mills returns to deeply personal material from his own life. 20th Century Women has been hailed as his best work yet and earned him an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay. The film is a coming of age tale about a teenage boy raised by three women from different generations in 1979 Santa Barbara. It’s a portrait of the city in a quieter, simpler time, as well as an ode to his steadfast mother […]...

In Mike Mills’ new semi-autobiographical film “20th Century Women,” Annette Benning stars as Dorothea, a single mother who tries to help her son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) grow up with the help of her tenant Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and her neighbor Julie (Elle Fanning). Music plays a key role in the film as Dorothea tries to understand Jamie’s love of punk rock, and Abbie bonds with Jamie by going to punk clubs. Check out the soundtrack to the film below, featuring songs by Talking Heads, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Germs and Suicide.

Annette Bening is simply glorious as one of the title characters in 20th Century Women. (Note to the Academy, make sure that Best Actress nomination happens.) She plays Dorothea Fields, a divorced mother facing enormous changes, social and personal, at the last summer of the 1970s. Specifically, she has a 15-year-old son to raise – that would be Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), with whom she shares a Santa Barbara boarding house that requires repair and renovation. She doesn't know how to guide Jamie through puberty. So she asks for help. One boarder – Abbie,...

While Mike Mills may not have been the most prolific filmmaker since adapting Walter Kirn’s Thumbsucker for his first feature in 2005, his ability to get great performances out of his casts is undeniable, especially after Christopher Plummer won an Oscar for his role in Mills’ Beginners in 2010.
Mills’ new film 20th Century Women comes from a similarly personal place as Beginners, as it follows the coming-of-age of 15-year-old Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann), living in a house in California with his overprotective single mother (Annette Bening), and two boarders, Abbey and William, played by Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup, in 1979. At the behest of his mother, Abbey and Jamie’s best friend Julie (Elle Fanning) are coerced into helping Jamie learn what it’s like to be a man that’s sympathetic towards women.

20th Century Women proves that Mike Mills is the real deal, that his previous success story was not a fluke but the announcement of an exciting new voice. Mills, who used to direct music videos and design album covers, broke into filmmaking with Thumbsucker, a terminally twee indie comedy, based on a novel but reminiscent of every suburban coming-of-age story ever to limp its way out of Sundance. The inauspicious anonymity of that first feature gave way to something much more distinctive, and affecting, with his second one, 2010’s autobiographical Beginners, in which Mills reinvented his style into a kind of diaristic collage—a mess of memories surrounding a particularly significant chapter of his life. It’s always a special thing to witness the exact moment when someone realizes the kind of artist they want to be.

Mike Mills’ latest film “20th Century Women” follows Dorothea (Annette Bening), a single mother who runs a boarding house in Southern California in 1979, who tries to raise her teenage son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) right. She enlists the help of tenant Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and the precocious Julie (Elle Fanning) to provide wisdom to the young Jamie so he can fly straight in a changing world. The film garnered critical acclaim since its late-year run on the festival circuit, with IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich claiming it’s “Mills’ best film” and the “most moving and mature of the four films he’s made to date.” Watch an exclusive featurette from the film below featuring Mills and Bening discussing the film and its origins at length.

If there was one major takeaway from the Nyff reviews for 20th Century Women, it’s that while Mike Mills’ latest directorial effort isn’t without it’s flaws, the nostalgic ’70s drama harbors a potentially award-winning performance from Annette Bening.
She’ll lead an all-star cast in the upcoming picture as single mother Dorothea Fields, and can be seen alongside Greta Gerwig and The Neon Demon‘s Elle Fanning in today’s poignant new trailer. Together, that trio underpins Mills’ narrative, one which chronicles three generations of women who intermingle in 1970s Santa Barbara. A robust cast – Alien: Covenant‘s Billy Crudup and Lucas Jade Zumann also star – coupled with the film’s idyllic aesthetic have us cautiously optimistic for the Mike Mills drama. Indeed it marks the filmmaker’s third creative effort after Beginners and Thumbsucker, but the question remains: can 20th Century Women find an audience to...

Mike Mills’ latest family drama “20th Century Women” garnered critical acclaim since its world premiere this past October. IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich says it’s Mills’ “best film” and that it’s “limpid, light, and beautifully remembered.” The film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) in 1979, a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing – free spirited punk artist Abbie (Greta Gerwig), and savvy and provocative teenage neighbor Julie (Elle Fanning). Over the course of her career, Annette Bening has been nominated for four Oscars. That, of course, shouldn’t come as a surprise because this is one extremely talented lady. What might shock you, though, is that Bening has taken home zero of those coveted statuettes — but this could all change with her latest work: 20th Century Women.
Mike Mills (Beginners, Thumbsucker) returns with another work he both directed and wrote the screenplay for — and it has the distinction of holding its world premiere on October 8 at the 54th New York Film Festival as the Centerpiece film this year.
The movie is a comedy based in Santa Barbara in the late 1970s and is the story of three women — Bening as single Dorothea Fields, a single mother to teenaged son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann); Greta Gerwig as Abbie,...

Shooting a feature film in Cuba comes with a unique set of challenges that make the usual logistical hurdles of filmmaking seem like nothing. Still, those who have had the opportunity to shoot in the socialist country say they wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. As the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba comes to an end, film production in the country is expected to ramp up.
While Hollywood studio productions like “Fast 8” and “Transformers: The Last Knight” claimed to be “making history” earlier this year by being the first American films to shoot in Havana in half a century, two American directors had already shot independent films in Cuba on the heels of the relaxed travel restrictions by the United States government: Bob Yari’s “Papa Hemingway in Cuba” and Ben Chace’s “Sin Alas” (“Without Wings”).

There are many great names attached to '70s drama 20th Century Women, from writer/director Mike Mills - Thumbsucker, Beginners - to the cast, which already boasts Annette Bening, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig. But now comes news that Almost Famous alumnus Billy Crudup is joining movie's imdb page.Other names to impress include Megan Ellison's Annapurna, the production company behind the project, who you may recognise from their work on the likes of Her, American Hustle and Foxcatcher, but Crudup is what's key, as he's playing the role that the film centres around. As the boarder living in the bungalow outside single mother Dorothea's (Bening) home, he's the former-hippy-cum-handyman that attracts the attention of not only Bening, but also Fanning and Gerwig. It's 1979, and California's ever-changing seaside town of Santa Barbara is a complicated place to grow up in for Dorothea's teenage son, whose world is changed...

In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

Bill And Ted might sneak in there, depending on how old you are, but the point is, this is an actor who is now famed for his action movies. It’s not surprising – more often than not, his forays into the genre have heralded a project that has reinvigorated tired themes and created films that have quickly achieved legendary status.
His recent movie release, John Wick, is a great example of that. Co-directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch from a script by Derek Kolstad, the action thriller about a former hitman dragged out of retirement and seeking revenge takes all the elements we’ve seen a million times and shakes them up, like a storytelling snowglobe. Crucial to its success is its humour,...

"Our nights together must remain a secret." After playing at Fantastic Fest last year, the first trailer for Spring has arrived. It's the classic story of boy meets girl, until the boy finds out the girl has some sort of horrific secret that will throw their entire romance into upheaval. Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker) takes the lead as a young American backpacking along the Italian coast, who meet Louise (Nadia Hilker), sparking a romantic connection. What starts as a promising romance soon becomes scary, not because of commitment, but because Louise has some kind of strange condition and, well, see what happens. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead's Spring from Collider: You can read our review of Spring from Fantastic Fest right here. Spring is directed by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, the former of which also wrote the script. Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a...

When Johnny Depp‘s mustache comedy “Mortdecai” brought in less than $5 million on opening weekend, it marked the A-list actor’s fifth straight box office bomb. But he’s far from the only top billed actor to endure a tanker or two.
The 51-year-old film star and his co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn are in fact in very good company.

Mike Mills, who shot to fame with festival hits Beginners and Thumbsucker, will direct the nostalgic trip back to the 1970’s.
Annapurna’s Megan Ellison will produce alongside Anne Carey of Archer Gray and Youree Henley.
Production has been earmarked for later this year in Southern California on the story of a boy growing up in Santa Barbara whose worldview is shaped by the women in his life.
20th Century Women takes place at a tumultuous time during the final stretch of President Carter’s tenure as punk was entering the scene and the oil crisis rocked the global economy.
“The film is an ode to the women who raised me; my mom, my sisters, the girls I was in love with or looked up to at school and in the punk rock scene where I really learned about the world,” said Mills.

Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures have come aboard to produce 20th Century Women, the next film from writer-director Mike Mills (Beginners, Thumbsucker). The period drama is about three very different women teaching a boy what men are, what women are, about love and freedom and finding your own form of sanity in 1979 Santa Barbara. When the boy’s mother takes in a male boarder, his worldview is further shaken by the man’s desire to understand and be loved by these seemingly unknowable women.
Archer Gray’s Anne Carey also will produce, as will Youree Henley.
“The film is an ode to the women who raised me: my mom, my sisters, the girls I was in love with or looked up to at school and in the punk rock scene where I really learned about the world,” Mills said in a statement. “These women were all so complicated and strong — all very funny,...

Austin - When the lights went down in the theater for the Fantastic Fest debut of "John Wick," I had no expectations at all for the film. It never occurred to me that it would end up being one of the most enjoyable things I saw there and a genuinely exciting announcement for a pair of pulp action filmmakers. Chad Stahelski was the stuntman who doubled for Keanu Reeves on "The Matrix," and since then, he's done "The Replacements," both "Matrix" sequels, "Thumbsucker," "Constantine," and "Man Of Tai Chi" with Reeves, and they've developed a strong collaborative relationship. David Leitch, who co-directed the film with Stahelski, has worked on dozens of movies with him in the stunt department. They've both worked as second-unit actual unit directors on films like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Escape Plan," "Safe," "The Wolverine," Parker," "Ninja Assassin," and the upcoming "Jurassic World." The two of...

The euphoria of an all-night concert — the crazy hook-ups, the booze and, of course, the killer music — is the kind of larger-than-life, emotionally charged scene that movies are made for.
So it’s no surprise that chasing that feeling led director and co-writer Alexander Mirecki to film All Together Now, which premieres Saturday at the L.A. Film Festival.
“For the longest time I had been interested in a narrative that had progressed in almost real time, where you didn’t take a huge chunk of time and try and condense it,” Mirecki explained on the phone with EW. “The...

Remake of Raimi's early '80s cult classic (and minor box-office performer) to easily surpass Jurassic Park 3D rerelease to land at the top of the domestic chart This past weekend, the no. 1 release at the Us/Canada -- actually, around the world -- box office was the widely panned 3D-converted sequel of a widely panned flick based on a toy. This weekend (April 6-8), in addition to the 3D toy-movie sequel mentioned above, two of the other top four movies on the domestic b.o. chart will be the remake of a bloody cult classic and the 3D-converted relaunch of a 1993 horror blockbuster. As the old saying goes, moviegoers are eager, thirsty, yearning for fresh, original content. That surely helps to explain why the brought-back-to-life Evil Dead will be this early April weekend's top film, likely to be followed by (toy movie sequel) G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the animated The Croods,...
