Last month, The Guardian launched a campaign to rescue Nicolas Cage. Today, we're coming to the aid of Alec Baldwin
Yesterday's news that Alec Baldwin plans to quit acting wasn't particularly surprising (it's a promise he's made several times before). But it was, still, saddening. When other actors threaten to leave the profession - invariably because their egos have convinced them that they'd make brilliant politicians - you know that the giant salary and global adoration will always pull them back in.
But Baldwin's announcement was depressing not just because he seems convinced of his intentions this time, but because he's arguably one of the best actors around. To lose him purely because he can, sometimes, be a bit of a sourpuss borders on the tragic.
Fortunately he's not threatening to retire until 2012, so we've got plenty of time to change his mind. By hook or by crook, we need »

The 51-year-old actor, who is co-hosting the Oscars ceremony in February, tells a Us magazine that he plans to retire in 2012
Alec Baldwin has told a Us magazine that he considers his entire film career to be a failure and that he plans to retire from the industry shortly.
In a startling interview published in the December issue of Men's Journal, the 51-year-old actor said, "I don't have any interest in acting anymore."
Baldwin, who was Oscar-nominated for his role in Wayne Kramer's offbeat 2003 romance The Cooler, is no stranger to critical and box-office kudos: he was praised for his performances in films such as Martin Scorsese's The Departed and The Aviator, and David Mamet's State and Main. Recently, he has been a huge hit in the award-winning TV comedy 30 Rock.
He is also being tipped for another bite at the Oscars cherry next February, for his »

Actor Alec Baldwin tells Men's Journal he no longer cares to act. "I don't have any interest in acting anymore," Baldwin says in the December issue of Men's Journal. Baldwin adds, "I'm not young, but I have time to do something else." The actor was a scene stealer as Shelly in the 2003 film "The Cooler," and Ellerby in "The Departed," where his intense characters dominated every frame. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "The Cooler." In 1988, Baldwin shot on the scene for me in several films; Tim Burton's "Beetle Juice" and then "Married to the Mob" as Frank the Cucumber, his evil, sexy mobster in the quirky Jonathan Demme film »

In a recent interview with Men’s Journal [via Reuters], Alec Baldwin, currently one of the most (intentionally) funny men on television right now, says he’ll be retiring from acting after 2012. He’s pretty down on himself in the piece saying that his entire film acting career has been a failure. “I consider my entire movie career a complete failure,” he told Men’s Journal. “The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.” I’m sorry that Baldwin uses that metric because he’s not only an insanely talented comedian, but when most people think of the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross, his single scene in the film immediately comes to mind. He also picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in 2003’s »

While renaissance man Hugh Jackman won't be back to host next year's Academy Awards Steve Martin will be and he'll be joined by 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have made the announcement that for the 82nd Academy Awards it will rely upon two co-hosts and not one.
Both men decided to lay down a quote each expressing their enthusiasm. "I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin," said funny guy Martin.
And the better-known Baldwin brother made this statement about his co-host's musical ability versus his own: "I don't play the banjo but I'm thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it's the opportunity of a lifetime."

Oscars producers, Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman, have announced the 82nd Academy Awards hosts on Tuesday, November 3. Unlike the host of last year event, Hugh Jackman, this year award event for outstanding movies will bring slightly contrary personalities.
Alec Baldwin, nominated for best supporting actor in 2004 for his role as Shelly Kaplow in "The Cooler", had never hosted this event. Conversely, Steve Martin hosted the 73rd Academy Award in 2001 and appeared once again as the host in 2003 for the same event. Both Baldwin and Martin have hosted "Saturday Night Live".
Martin, 64, said he is happy to host the Award with Baldwin, 51, whom he referred to jokingly as his enemy. Indeed, the two will play as rivals in a movie called "It's Complicated" which will be released on Christmas day. And Baldwin said, "I don't play the banjo, but I'm thrilled to be hosting the Oscar - it's the opportunity of a lifetime. »

Last year's host, Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman, declined to handle the tough and time-consuming job of hosting the Academy Awards two years running, and Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr also passed on the gig, so naturally the Oscar producers asked Steve Martin and Oscar nominee Alec Baldwin (The Cooler) to team up to tackle Mc'ing duties. Martin and Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards to be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. And while Baldwin's an Oscar hosting rookie, Martin's already performed the job twice previously, hosting the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows.

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as cohosts of the 82nd annual Academy Awards!
Telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman said that the duo are "the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars."
This will be the first time for Baldwin to host the Oscars, while Martin has hosted twice before, in 2001 and 2003. Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in "The Cooler."
This is not the first time the Oscar telecast is presented with multiple hosts. In 1983, Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor, and Walter Matthau hosted; In 1986, Alan Alda, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams; Then in 1987, Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, Paul Hogan.

When the comedy gods close a door, they open a window. Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. said no to co-hosting next year's Academy Awards, and we barely had time to grieve for what might have been before we received this news: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin have said yes. It's official, as detailed in a press release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Martin has hosted the Oscars twice before, in 2000 and 2002, and he happens to be my personal favorite host. In fact, he's one of my personal favorite entertainers, period. The man is a straight-up genius, the terrible movies he's made in the last decade notwithstanding. Baldwin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Cooler, so he at least knows his way to the theater, and he's currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to his top-notch work on TV's 30 Rock.

Oscar organizers on Tuesday named an unlikely pair of hosts for March's Academy Awards, comedian Steve Martin and "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin, a past loser at the world's top film awards. The choice of Martin and Baldwin comes as a mild surprise on the heels of last February's Oscar telecast hosted by song-and-dance man Hugh Jackman. It earned some favorable reviews and higher viewership than the previous year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, had previously hired "Hairspray" director Adam Shankman to co-produce and, based on Jackman's success and Shankman's history making musicals, the betting had been that organizers might aim for another music-oriented telecast. But Martin is known as a stand-up comedian and comic actor, while Baldwin's reputation was built in theater and film dramas like 2003's "The Cooler," which earned him a best supporting actor nomination. »
