Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Review

6 November 2009 10:56 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.

Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

J.J. Abrams Producing NBC Pilot Undercovers; May Direct

6 November 2009 12:43 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams is once again using his producing magic to get another TV series off the ground.  Yes, I know that “What About Brian” and “Six Degrees” were both cancelled, but he’s had some success with the last two projects he helped launch, “Lost” and “Fringe”.  Now he’s going to try to give NBC a dramatic hit they sorely need in their line-up with “Undercovers”.  Hit the jump for details.

THR reports that, schedule permitting, Abrams will make “Undercovers” the first TV pilot he has directed since 2004’s “Lost” opener.  According to THR, it was the success of that pilot which helped Abrams get the gigs for “Mission: Impossible III” and later “Star Trek”.  This means that no one took much notice of the episodes he directed of “Felicity” and “Alias”.  Good thing that “Lost” turned out to be one of the best television series of all-time. »

NBC wins bidding war for J.J. Abrams' new series

TV News: J.J. Abrams Wants to Direct NBC Pilot Undercovers, Cartoon Network Adds Live Action Shows, Comedy Central & The Onion Team Up for Pilot, HBO Developing Transgender Series

5 November 2009 9:46 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We have a bevy of TV updates tonight: First up, it appears that J.J. Abrams is in talks to direct the pilot of his newest series on NBC, a spy drama entitled Undercovers. We previously reported the fact that he was developing the show, and that it seemed to be strikingly similar to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It's been a while since we've seen Abrams behind the directors chair for one of his own shows. He directed Lost's fantastic pilot, but hasn't yet done anything for Fringe. Alias's pilot was his first foray into directing action, and he's definitely honed that craft in his subsequent works, especially Mission: Impossible 3 and Star Trek. It's going to be interesting to see how he translates his recent big screen experience to television. Also, Cartoon Network has given the production green light to two live action series. The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Sands of Not My Freakin' Dime

4 November 2009 1:09 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.

The Good

• For years, there have been several attempts to do a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, none of them ever came close to moving ahead. Speaking to MTV last week, director Robert Zemeckis set the record straight: that this time he is personally involved and really excited to do the sequel, and that he has commissioned original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman to write the screenplay. Martin Landau Addresses Possible 'Mission: Impossible 4' Cameo

30 October 2009 1:57 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Producer J.J. Abrams has previously talked about how cool it would be if some of "Mission: Impossible" cast members make a cameo in the fourth feature installment, but star Martin Landau apparently shared no similar feeling. In an interview with MTV News, the Rollin Hand of the original TV series insisted that he has no interest to appear in "Mission: Impossible 4".

When asked whether he might take a participation in the in-development fourth film, the 81-year-old stated that he is not excited about making a mere cameo. "Unless it was a great part, which it probably isn't, it would probably be a cameo, a little joke, that wouldn't interest me at all," the Academy Award-winning actor shared.

During the chat, the Bob Ryan of "Entourage" revealed that he was against the film franchise since the beginning. "When they were working on an early incarnation of the first one - not »

J.J. Abrams Won’t Be Directing Mission: Impossible IV

30 October 2009 12:27 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

That’s according to the man himself. Speaking to MTV, “Mission: Impossible III” and “Star Trek” director, J.J. Abrams says he just too busy to consider directing Mission: Impossible IV:

“I’m producing with Tom,” he said recently. “My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie.”

With Abrams and Tom Cruise both directing, the hunt is on for a new director to take to the chair, just who could fill the boots of Abrams, John Woo and Brian De Palma? As if that wasn’t enough to think about, rumours have bee circulating over the last few years that Cruise may not return to the series as the central protagonist, Imf Agent, Ethan Hunt. So what did Abrams have to say on the matter?

“I don’t want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it’s a story that »

J.J. Abrams Not Directing Mission: Impossible 4

29 October 2009 9:55 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

J.J. Abrams, now one of the big guns in Hollywood, was integral in making Mission: Impossible III not only a success, but a good movie – something we needed after M:i:ii.

Over the last year we’ve heard rumblings that Tom Cruise was planning the inevitable fourth installment. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that Cruise had asked Abrams to join him once again to make Mission: Impossible IV. With those two on board, the ball quickly started to roll and Abrams hired the writers in the summer to pen the screenplay.

The one thing we were still unsure of however, was whether or not Abrams would direct again.

The last update we heard from Abrams was from last month when spoke about Star Trek 2 and M:i IV – he said only this:

“It’s being written right now by Andre Nemec and Josh Applebaum… We’re hoping to get it soon, »

Martin Landau Is 'Not Interested' In Appearing In A 'Mission: Impossible' Movie

29 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

When J.J. Abrams took on directing duties for "Mission: Impossible III," he tried to get Martin Landau – who played super-spy Rollin Hand in the original '60s TV series – to take on a cameo role in the movie. "[J]ust for fun," the director said recently, "and [I] was told that he had no interest in doing it."

Now we know why. In an interview with MTV News, Landau said he has no interest in appearing in an adaptation of a franchise of which he's fiercely protective and which he feels is not true to the original series. "I'm not interested in doing that," he explained. "Let the young Rollin Hand live on."

With a fourth "Mission" in the works, that stance is unlikely to change. "Unless it was a great part, which it probably isn't, it would probably be a cameo, a little joke, that wouldn't interest me at all," Landau said. »

J.J. Says No No To Directing Mission: Impossible 4

29 October 2009 2:20 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

After making a name for himself in the TV department with shows like Alias and Lost, J.J. Abrams literally exploded onto the blockbuster scene with Mission: Impossible III in 2006. Abrams is very well aware of the industry.s keenness towards building franchises, but when it comes to M:i 4, he's confident they can do it with him just as a producer. In an interview with MTV, Abrams explains, .My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie." As pointed out by MTV, Abrams taking a pass on directorial duties could be good for M:i fans. With the Star Trek franchise already on his plate, M:i 4 would likely take a backseat, and it would be quite sometime before we.d see the film. As a producer, Abrams has high hopes about getting the flick up and running in the near future: .My hope ... »

J.J. Abrams Won't Direct Mission: Impossible IV

29 October 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It seems that the director of Tom Cruise's next mission won't helm his next. According to MTV, J.J. Abrams won't likely be on board to direct Mission: Impossible IV.

"I'm producing with Tom," he said recently. "My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie."

Abrams directed the last film, Mission: Impossible III, but with Star Trek 2 in the works for Abrams to direct, along with a slew of other projects, the news doesn't come as too big a surprise.

Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are currently writing the screenplay and Abrams was also asked of the rumors that a younger actor might step into star, but Abrams wouldn't reveal too much.

"I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created," he explained. "It's not a reboot kind of thing. »

Exclusive: J.J. Abrams Probably Won't Helm 'Mission: Impossible 4'

From MTV.Com: In 2006, J.J. Abrams was largely known as a TV guy, one of the creative minds behind fare like "Lost" and "Alias." Then came a turn in the directing chair for "Mission: Impossible III," when he popped off explosions galore around Tom Cruise, and Abrams' career was never the same. Rebooted "Star Trek," anyone?

Now, a fourth "Mission" is in the works. Will Abrams step back into the role that brought him from small-screen whiz kid to big-screen guru? That seems unlikely, as Abrams made clear in an interview with MTV News.

Movie Review: Trucker (2009)

Michelle Monaghan and Jimmy Bennett in Trucker

Photo: Monterey Media Picked up and added to the release schedule out of the blue, it seems the primary reason James Mottern's Trucker is making the rounds is an attempt by Monterey Media to score some award season attention for its lead star Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible III). Playing a big-rig truck driver leading a life on the road with a past that will soon come back into play, Monaghan performs well enough in the role, but to assume it's going to propel her into the Oscar race is a reach. Although it will make sure she isn't forgotten in the coming years should she continue down this path.

Monaghan plays Diane, a young and attractive truck driver we first meet in a cheap hotel room having sex with a man we don't see after the opening couple of minutes. This is the life »

Exclusive: Michelle Monaghan Talks ‘Trucker’

16 October 2009 3:51 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

To the uninformed, Michelle Monaghan might be little more than a recognizable face. Yet, the actress has had a strong start to her career, having appeared in several of the most successful recent movies. That’s her in The Bourne Supremacy, Mission: Impossible III, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Eagle Eye. Nothing she’s done to this point, to resurrect the age old cliché, will prepare you for her work in Trucker. A small, subtle character study set against the vast expanse of the American West and written and directed by James Mottern, it’s the story of a tough trucker named Diane (Monaghan) who finds her independence and isolation compromised when she’s reacquainted with the son (Jimmy Bennett) she abandoned as an infant. Film School Rejects spoke to Monaghan about the deeply personal project, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008 and is now in limited release. What »

Michelle Monaghan Wants To Reunite With Tom Cruise For 'Mission: Impossible IV'

13 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Last time we checked in on possibility-defying super-agent Ethan Hunt, he had once again saved the world and was headed off on his honeymoon. Three years after "Mission: Impossible III" ended, Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams are gearing up for a fourth go at the franchise. So what's happened to Hunt during this period of "Mission" silence?

Has he given up the life of a secret-keeping secret agent for the pleasures and pains of committed matrimony? Or did Hunt ditch his bride Julia and dive back into a world of insurmountable obstacles, cool gadgets and witty one-liners? And how, if at all, would Hunt's character arc impact the possibility of Michelle Monaghan, who played Julia, returning to the franchise?

"I haven't [talked to J.J.], but I'm interested," the actress told MTV News recently. "I'd like to see what's going on with that. Obviously, it's an amazing franchise and I had so much fun making that film. »

Mission: Impossible IV May Feature Original TV Actors

11 October 2009 1:32 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

There hasn't been much news about the fourth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, but the production is inching along. It was announced in June that Mission: Impossible IV was moving forward, with both J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise attached. However, it was not made clear whether both men were only producing or if they would also be returning to direct and star, respectively. In August, it was announced that Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec were hired to write the screenplay, based on Abrams' idea.

Now, Abrams has revealed that Mission: Impossible IV may feature characters and actors from the original TV series.

How cool would that be? I just got a call that Peter Graves is in great shape, which would be a very bizarre bend in the space-time continuum, for obvious reasons. I almost feel like you could make him serious again and bring him back. Whether it's [Leonard] Nimoy, »

J. J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman Talk Mission: Impossible 4, Transformers 3, Cowboys and Aliens and More

9 October 2009 5:10 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

J. J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are three of the busiest men in show business. The director and writers of this summer's hugely successful re-imagining of Star Trek are also behind Fox's hit TV show, Fringe, and 2006's Mission: Impossible III. On top of that Kurtzman and Orci are also responsible for this summer's other huge box office hit, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen while Abrams is putting the finishing touches on the final season of his television phenomenon, Lost. So needles to say the men are constantly busy with multiple projects but they did have the time to stop by Santa Monica yesterday for a Paramount event honoring the release of Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, on DVD and Blue Ray later this fall. The talented creators shared some of their pending sequels and upcoming projects with the audience.
