Are you familiar with the British quiz show called The Chase? Well, this speedy knowledge fest is about to become more familiar. Gsn has picked up an American incarnation of the game show to also be called The Chase and Brooke Burns has been chosen as host. Burns is a former Baywatch babe. The blue-eyed beauty acted as Vanessa Mancini on Melrose Place and has hosted programs like Dog Eat Dog and You Deserve It. You may also recognize Burns from the Nickelback music video for “Trying Not To Love You”.
The Chase puts a team of four contestants up against the show’s “resident genius” and is very fast paced. In the British version, Bradley Walsh served as host and the game show ran for 6 seasons. The UK’s resident geniuses numbered 4 throughout the seasons and they were a collection of winners from various other quiz shows. This leads...

Screen Australia has granted more than $276,000 in funding to support the development of 10 feature films, including projects by the co-writer of local smash The Sapphires and the team behind Wish You Were Here.
It is a small financial lifeline for the industry which is no longer receiving drama production investment from the national government agency after it spent its entire annual $42 million budget in just six months.
Among the new feature film projects to receive funding is comedy-drama The Grip, written by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires). It follows five young Australian businessmen who discover the secret to winning the pokies and develop Robin Hood-like reputations. David Field (The Combination) will direct.
Writer Felicity Price and director Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) have also received funding to develop a new (as yet) untitled thriller. It follows social misfit Vincent, who holds a flame for 17-year-old Amber, but when his hopes are crushed he acts impulsively,...

It’s being reported by Variety that Dog Eat Dog and All Your Dead Ones director Carlos Moreno will next tackle the hitman film Lost Wolves for 64A Films and Rcn Cine. Written by Harold Devasten, who was featured in both of the aforementioned pictures, it centers on “two hit-men — a vet and a teen — dispatched for a job, who suffer a terrible car accident, are cared for by local villagers.” The village is Santa Marta, an area executive producer Maja Zimmermann describes as a “remote paradise” with a “vivid-colored landscape [that] will be a very important part of the film.”
Throughout the story, which is said to be a “romantic thriller with touches of black comedy and echoes of a Western,” the two are introduced to concepts such as “solidarity, compassion, even love,” things they’re not accustomed to. However, they still have to eliminate their target: a human rights lawyer.

Look out Shear Genius, there's a new coiffing show in town and this one is Extreme. Oxygen's Hair Battle Spectacular premieres tonight at 10:00 Pm, with ten hairdressers going head-to-head to see who's the best in fantasy hair design. Hosted by Brooke Burns (of the new Melrose Place, Dog Eat Dog, and Baywatch fame) the competitors will live together in a house while their visions walk a weekly hair battle runway to win $100,000.
Never heard of fantasy hair design? The show's creators say it's "part sculpture and part pop art." The series mixes Project Runway with Shear Genius and throws in a dash of Ace of Cakes for good measure. The designs range from hairstyles that look like wedding cakes to toys with moving pieces. It promises not to disappoint.
We spoke with host Brooke Burns recently about how she got involved, her favorite theme,...

The PopWatch tribe has spoken, and crowned Wipeout as the best Guilty Pleasure Reality TV show of all time. In honor of this career-defining achievement, EW spoke to the show’s creator/executive producer Matt Kunitz and one of its hosts, John Henson, about what makes the show’s pratfalls so special, and what new obstacles they have in store for Wipeout's season three, shooting now. Henson says he wasn’t surprised by the PopWatch honor, since he campaigned on Facebook. “It was a lot like during the Obama election, we went down to canvassing door to door,” he quips,...

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, A Simple Plan, Fargo, seems like every other good movie has a big bag full of money as its centerpiece. Dog Eat Dog is yet another. Luckily, it’s not a wasted or half-hearted effort (Big Nothing comes to mind); it’s just a damn fine film.
Bookended by a catchy salsa theme, Dog Eat Dog is a typical crime story with an atypical sense of rhythm. Whereas Sierra Madre and A Simple Plan find their strength in their slow crawl towards inevitable moral collapse, Dog Eat Dog never seems stagnant for even a moment, and even when introducing rather unexpected notions, never loses its grip or believability. It takes risks, revels in its rapid descent towards ultimate oblivion and never lets up so you can relax. You’ll find yourself with precious few moments to catch your breath even in the first third of the film.

Without a doubt, the biggest release of the week is the Ak 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa boxed set coming from The Criterion Collection. The 25 disc set (amazon) has been put together for the occasion of the centenary of his birth and is the largest Kurosawa collection ever assembled. It includes most films spanning his 50 year career (1943 to 1993). At $400 retail however, I'll probably have to settle for revisiting my 3-disc Seven Samurai set for now.
Another big release this week is Home Movie (amazon), Christopher Denham's horror festival favorite. It garnered some amazing reviews when it played well over a year ago, including a 10/10 by our own Rick Mcgrath, so it's gotta be good.
Another long awaited release is Tkashi Miike's cult shocker, Gozu (amazon), which is getting a 2-Disc Collector's Edition.

"Dog Eat Dog" is Columbian documentary maker Carlos Moreno's first feature, an unusual crime thriller that although owing a lot to its English language genre contemporaries manages to maintain a distinct flavor, one which isn't necessarily that of Latin American cinema as we know it. Themes of paranoia, individuality, chance and Voodoo witchcraft intertwine in unexpected ways, with tight direction and surprisingly assured performances from its amateur cast making for an impressive and original debut.
A basic, even cliched plot sees gangster Victor Peñaranda steal a bag of his boss's money in his Medallin fiefdom, and he is sent on a blind mission to Cali where fellow gangsters subtly probe him on the whereabouts of the money. During his stay, bizarre phone calls to the hotel...

The "Wipeout" set looks like the world's largest playground.
Candy-colored ramps, rope swings, slides and bouncy big balls. You know it's a complete mirage. You know the course is treacherous, specifically designed to make runners face-plant, and that most parents wouldn't let their kids anywhere near it. Yet from a distance, your inner adolescent wants to run straight down the launch ramp.
ABC's "Wipeout" is shot on a sprawling ranch in Santa Clarita, Calif. The crew is readying 16 hours for a second season in the summer with a new array of obstacles to trip up contestants.
"We changed 95% of the course, but we kept the Big Balls," said executive producer Matt Kunitz, referring to the show's signature inflated obstacle. "We want it to be like 'The Price Is Right,' where we're constantly changing the course but sometimes bringing back favorite games with new twists."

I haven't been moved at all to do an Oscar Update because nothing has happened that warrants any kind of real attention. Either predictions are being made on films that haven't been seen or much ado is being made about nothing. However, I can't make it seem like I have abandoned "The Contenders" section so I was able to pull a Ton of little tidbits together and bring you what I believe to be a rather impressive update if I may say so myself. We can start with a few of the Oscar contenders I saw recently. I reviewed Blindness (D), Appaloosa (B), The Duchess (C-) and Miracle at St. Anna (D+). Obviously I wasn't all that impressed with three of them and those three are going to struggle for an Oscar nom outside of costume and art noms for The Duchess. As far as any topline awards go, all four are out of contention.

Edgar Ramirez (Vantage Point, "The Bourne Ultimatum) is set to topline a new horror thriller entitled VIENE EL JAGUAR. In the film he'll play a tortured ex-priest trailing an exorcist in the Colombian jungle (now that's interesting!). Carlos Moreno will direct from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Alonso Torres. "Jaguar" is based on the recent revelation that a group of under-age Colombian para-militaries, Los Cruzados, painted their nails black, practiced Satanic rites and ate human flesh to exorcize the spirits of villagers they had killed, Moreno explained at Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival on Thursday. Produced by Colombia's Antorcha Films, "Jaguar" reteams the talent behind Sundance-player "Perro come perro" (Dog Eat Dog).

Fox has lined up actress Brooke Burns and TV personality Mark Thompson to host its Japanese-inspired game show "Hole in the Wall."
Burns previously hosted the game show "Dog Eat Dog" and has acting credits that include roles in the comedy "Miss Guided" and "North Shore." Thompson is a weather anchor for Fox's Los Angeles affiliate Kttv-tv, and provides voiceover for such Fox series as "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"
"Hole in the Wall," from American Idol producers FremantleMedia North America, starts production this week in Los Angeles. The show was often described as "human Tetris" after videos of the hit Japanese version became popular on YouTube. Contestants work as teams to try to fit through oncoming cut-out shapes or else they're pushed off a platform. Fremantle is producing versions of the show in several countries.

Fox had the most-watched program of the week -- thank you, American Idol -- but NBC and CBS split the overall primetime bragging rights for the week ended Sept. 1. The Wednesday edition of American Idol: The Search for a Superstar was by far the top-rated program of the week in total viewers (16.9 million) and in the adults 18-49 demo (8.3 rating/23 share). The Tuesday edition of Idol was a close second with 15 million viewers and a 7.5/20 in the demo. Still, CBS led the primetime pack in total viewers (7.6 million) for the week on the strength of not one but two CSI: Crime Scene Investigation reruns (on Monday and Thursday) and the regular Monday rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond. NBC narrowly beat Fox in the demo derby (NBC's 2.8/9 to Fox's 2.7/9) with a strong showing from its Monday reality lineup of Fear Factor, Dog Eat Dog and Meet My Folks.
