Not much to say
shaid4 February 2003
I saw the film during the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. It's a kind of movie I have seen before. Mother & daughter are looking for love. It's a sort of a bitter-sweet film about life, which can be sometime very good but sometime not. I have seen better films than this but I have also seen worse films than this. One thing did get my notice. The more the film go the more the daughter looks like her mother. Was this a symbol which says that the daughter has the same future as her mother? Don't know and the film was not that interesting to make me think about it too much when it ended.

Boring and dull
twil8 February 2004
That says it actually all. Several characters meeting each other in several situations. A girl, who does not know her father, living with her mother. Looking for love and trying to find a man for her mother as well. I wasn't able to detect any intelligence in the characters and their behavior; neither the movie had some charisma or atmosphere. Needed to force myself to watch it till the end.

Makes you think
tobu30 June 2004
I enjoyed the movie. In fact I enjoy movies that make you think. Devcatko was one of these movies indeed. You had to go deep into thought to figure out what it is really about. On the cover it seemed like a very dull and boring movie, however its purpose was to enlighten you with thought. It nicely portrayed the difficulty of finding happiness for mane central Europeans which is often caused by single parent family roots where a mother lives miserable life which affects the daughter who realising this, tries to help out her mother, however, unfortunately eventually ending up just the same. The filming was great quality, camera work was excellent, and the soundtracks were just great. I give it 7 / 10.

a few

I enjoyed this film for three main reasons. I loved the soundtrack (my friend Teri was humming the theme music all the way to the drum jam we went to after the film), I loved the look of Haje and Southtown and the bright, often surreal colors and subtle computer enhancements in both day and night scenes, and I enjoyed the quirky characters and the performers who brought them to life. The performances, the scenery, the use of light and color, the camera work... The movie had the mood of a sixties comedy, like Petulia(Julie Christie, George C Scott),which revolved around a peculiar kooky main character and her adventures. It's irreverant and though not perfect extremely interesting. Worth a peek, and I'd see it again. In fact, I did. It was better the second time.

Go to see this movie...

If you're a casual American and you'd like to know about a typical life in Middle Europe or simply in Europe, go to see this movie... It's a story about love, hate and family... I'm proud to be Czech because the czech cinematography is producing only about 20 movies (which go through all the cinemas here...) a year but these 20 movies are mostly much more better than 75 percent of the american production... That's my opinion... Enquire in your conscience...
