Two of France’s major film companies, Curiosa and Playtime, are teaming up to launch Curious Times, a production label dedicated to premium scripted drama. Under this label, the two Paris-based companies will produce French and European TV projects.
The first project to be developed under the Curious Times banner is “War Photographer,” a mini-series based on the life of the legendary photographer Robert Capa, who lived through three wars and was a witness to all key events of the 20th century.
“War Photographer” was created by French director Gilles Bourdos (“Renoir”) and Israeli screenwriter Yaron Seelig (“Matter Of Time”).
Curious Times is currently developing a slate of high-profile projects with well-established filmmakers, in line with the auteur-driven approach of both Curiosa Films and Playtime.
The two companies previously collaborated on several films, including Claire Denis’s critically-acclaimed “Let the Sunshine In” with Juliette Binoche which opened Cannes’s Directors’ Fortnight last year.

Steven Spielberg is busy, busy, busy. The director is currently readying his next movie, the untitled Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks which will be released this fall (and which we think will be an Oscar contender). After that, he's got "The B.F.G." due in 2016, and among the potential projects on his plate is "Indiana Jones 5," possibly with Chris Pratt, and the Ptsd military drama "Thank You For Your Service.” Now, he's got another military movie brewing with one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood attached. Deadline reports that Jennifer Lawrence will star in Spielberg's adaptation of the memoir “It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life Of Love and War.” Photojournalist Lynsey Addario penned the book about her time in Afghanistan, Africa and Iraq. Here's the synopsis: War photographer Lynsey Addario’s memoir It’s What I Do is the story of how the relentless pursuit of truth,...

Deadline reports Lawrence will star in “It’s What I Do,” an adaptation of war photographer Lynsey Addario that Steven Spielberg will direct. The story will follow “a woman who goes into the most dangerous places in the world in search of truth.” Addario covered the American invasion of Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks, photographing the Afghan people before and after the reign of the Taliban, and the story will also feature a love story in Addario meeting the man who will ultimately become her husband. Directed by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, Finding Vivian Maier documents Maloof’s journey to discover more about Vivian Maier after purchasing a box of her negatives in 2007. He began the search a few years later, after he realized the negatives consisted of some of the best undeveloped street photography of the 20th century. After some searching, it was revealed that Maier was a career-nanny who had died in 2009.
Since the documentary is in serious contention for a best documentary feature Oscar, we thought we’d check to see how many other photography-related films have managed to resonate with the Academy’s documentary branch and land a nomination in the same category. We found six.
The Naked Eye (1956)
Directed by two-time Oscar winner Louis Clyde Stoumen, this documentary celebrates photography through history by looking at pioneers in the field, such as Margaret Bourke-White. Though he covers works by multiple photographers,...

★★★☆☆Erik Poppe's globetrotting drama A Thousand Times Goodnight (2013) opens to an extraordinarily tense scene. War photographer Rebecca (French star Juliette Binoche) stands at a graveside in Kabul; women clad in black wail at the graveside, mourning the loss of a presumed loved one, before a figure within the grave rises. The woman, as we can see, is very much alive and is a suicide bomber, going through ritualistic preparations before she commits her violent act. Throughout this surreal ordeal, Rebecca watches on, documenting all that happens with her camera - "click, click, click". She even goes as far as to travel along in a van with the suicide bomber until she awakens to the perilous predicament she's in.

Oh, the pathos. Unless you’re very unlucky at cards you’ve been unlucky in love, which makes the torments of the jilted one of the more ordinarily/inevitable aspects of human existence. Few have been spared a love gone south; many are the friends who have listened to the anguished, keening lamentations about the one that got away and thought, with all kindness, "Enough already." And if you don’t want your life to turn into a country song, you comply. That said, the marvelous thing about director Christen Frei ("War Photographer," "Space Tourists") is how he gets the viewer to care, deeply, about the pathetic whining creatures in his latest documentary "Sleepless in New York." As regards much of current nonfiction, it goes its own way stylistically, structurally, musically and sonically in telling the stories of people in the throes of a recent breakup, and how they cope -- or,...

People already know Keanu Reeves is immortal. That's just common knowledge. But did you also know that Nicolas Cage is also a member of the walking undead? Someone on eBay has proof. And as we all know, people on the Internet cannot tell lies. Irrefutable proof of Cage's immortal status comes by way of a picture taken by a war photographer. A Civil War photographer, that is. The picture dates back to around 1870 and clearly shows Mr. Cage, and certainly not someone who just so happens to look like him, looking dapper in the styles of the day. Now to see this photo in person with your very own eyes and call it your own will cost you a very reasonable $1,000,000.00. But don't worry, the seller does have 100% positive...

With biopics already a go for Lincoln and Hoover, it seems reasonable that Hollywood would get behind one about someone a little less famous. The Michael Mann-directed Capa about Spanish Civil War photographer Robert Capa is finally picking up steam after months of idling. Word is he.s found his two leads, and it.s very hard to argue with either of his choices. According to Total Film, Andrew Garfield has been cast as Capa himself, while Gemma Arterton will play his partner and lover Gerda Taro. The script will reportedly follow the acclaimed novel Waiting For Robert Capa, which means the flick will likely cover exclusively or almost exclusively his time shooting the Spanish Civil War. I.ll stop short of calling that limited scope a shame, but it is at least noteworthy that Capa led a fascinating life outside the Spanish Civil War. Not only did he...

Today is Veterans Day in the United States. While Memorial Day pays tribute to people who gave their lives in military service to the country, Veterans Day has a more celebratory air. It's a day reserved for all veterans of service across all of the branches of the military, whether they served during wartime or simply gave their service in times of peace. In many ways, the military is the most important government program running, as those in service not only defend us but also provide assistance in dangerous areas around the world and assist those in need within our borders as well.
Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 because it is the anniversary of the end of World War I (an Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, signifying the end of major combat in one of the most brutal...

If there is one thing I can accuse of acclaimed director Christian Frei (War Photographer), it is that he somehow made a boring documentary about space exploration. This is not an insult to him or his film, it is kind of the raison d'etre, because humanity has somehow taken the majesty and the glory of the Soviet and American Space Race, and turned it into a mundane commodity for the rich and surprisingly the poor as well. From Neil Armstrong's famous words from the moon, to a Pizza Hut logo on one of the space shuttle rocket boosters, we've come a long way from that starry eyed ideals of the final frontier. And the beleaguered Russian space program, gutted at the collapse of the Soviet Union more than a decade ago, relies on selling the 'third seat' on its Soyuz rockets to various rich software engineers or the founder...

Having seen Christian Frei's War Photographer nearly a decade ago, I wasn't sure what to expect from his new documentary about the post-Soviet effort to finance Russia's Space Program. War Photographer had earned an Oscar nomination, and now the Swiss documentarian returned to Sundance for the Us premiere of Space Tourists, which vied in the World Documentary Competition. As its title suggests, the film trains its lens on lay visitors to outer space, a funding source for the Russians to keep their shuttle flying while Nasa plans to discontinue the American program. Frei follows Iranian-American multimillionaire Anousheh Ansari as she undergoes ersatz cosmonaut training en route to becoming the world's first female space tourist. She herself is armed with a camera, and her footage on board the International Space Station is some of the most intimate, breathtaking imagery we will ever see from outer space. It's been a couple months since Public Enemies came and went, so it's long past time (as far as I'm concerned) to hear what director Michael Mann is doing next. There's a good chance he'll next turn to another period biopic, this time of famed Spanish Civil War photographer Robert Capa. Capa is one of the most renowned war photographers and his lover Gerda Taro is famous for being the first female war photog on the front lines; she was killed during a battle in 1937. Variety reports Mann's interest; his picture will likely be based on Spanish author Susana Fortes' novel Waiting for Robert Capa, which was published this past spring to great acclaim in Spain. The novel begins in 1935, when Endre Friedmann meets Gerta Pohorylle. Both exiled Jewish communists, the two changed their names to have a better chance in the world of photography.
