Who killed off The Golden Compass?

15 December 2009 5:02 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sam Elliot believes the Catholic church killed off any chances of a sequel to The Golden Compass, but the truth may be far simpler

After the success of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy looked a dead cert for epic fantasy book franchise success. In 2007, when first installment The Golden Compass was released, it looked to have all the right ingredients: moppet actors, spectacular battles, a sexy baddie, Ian McKellen, snow. But no sequels were made. Why?

Actor Sam Elliot thinks he knows. According to an interview in the Evening Standard, Elliot – who basically played himself in The Golden Compass – is pinning the failure of the series directly on the Pope, saying: "The Catholic church happened to The Golden Compass, as far as I'm concerned. It did incredible at the box office. Incredible. It took $85m (£52m) in the States. »

Cameron Diaz Snapped Hooking Up With Alleged New Beau

7 December 2009 10:36 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

It seems that Cameron Diaz has found a new man after she broke up with model Paul Sculfor. The "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" actress has been spotted on Sunday night, December 6 hooking up with an unidentified guy while she was going out in Sevilla, Spain along with some friends.

Having dinner together, the guy was said sitting by Diaz when she chatted with her friends. Throughout the night, the co-star of Tom Cruise in "Knight & Day" was reported showing him "little signs of affection."

Kristen Stewart's 'Welcome To The Rileys' Role Is Only The Latest Fictional Stripper In Hollywood

7 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

With pictures of Kristen Stewart as a stripper in the upcoming Sundance player "Welcome to the Rileys" hitting the Internet last week, we decided to take a look back at five Hollywood actresses who starred as a stripper in the past, and how the decision impacted their careers. Some were launched into success stories, while others took a sharp downward turn. Hopefully, Stewart will take some pointers from those who came before her and avoid squashing the success "The Twilight Saga" has given her. If that's even possible.

One unusual fact that's worth noting: three of the five names on this list -- Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan and Heather Graham -- all followed up their stripper appearances with roles in the Emilio Estevez-directed film, "Bobby." It's hard to say what that means, though three counts as a trend. Apparently, fake stripping drives female actors to Emilio Estevez. Go figure. »

Beautiful, Fabulous and Evil: 10 Favorite Female Villains!

17 November 2009 3:22 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

This list was inspired by some of the most recent female villains portrayed on the big screen - in particular Mo'Nique, the lazy, vile and selfish mother to Gabby Sidibe's character in Precious and Cate Blanchett who played the brilliant and nasty Irina Spalko out to spoil the adventures of Indiana Jones in the latest sequel of the popular adventure series.

- - - While some of the most memorable female villains are portrayed as ugly, unfashionable monsters, there are a good number of characters who are evil but also beautiful and fabulous. Some would even rival the female leads in terms of beauty, fashion and style thus we have this list.

Charlie's Angels set for TV revival in new series

13 November 2009 1:13 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Glamorous detective trio Charlie's Angels are on their way to the small screen once again, with Us network ABC about to commission a pilot from Sony Pictures TV.

Josh Friedman will write and executive-produce the new series, reports Variety.

He previously developed and wrote Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and was screenwriter on movies The Black Dahlia and War of the Worlds.

Also involved are original Charlie's Angels producer Leonard Goldberg, who launched the series with Aaron Spelling in 1976, as well as Drew Barrymore, who starred in and produced the 2000 film version and its sequel.

Spelling has twice before attempted bringing the show back to the small screen, with Angels 88 - which never got off the ground - and a second bid in 2004.

The original Charlie's Angels ran from 1976 to 1981, with cast members including Farrah Fawcett who died earlier this year.

Cameron Diaz Gives Thumbs Up to 'Charlie's Angels 3'

4 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Having a number of future projects lining-up in front of her apparently doesn't stop Cameron Diaz to do another "Charlie's Angels" movie should the third one is being developed. The Natalie Cook of the action-comedy franchise fessed up about her willingness in an interview with MTV News while promoting "The Box".

"You know people ask me about it all the time," she stated when presented with the possibility of returning. "I would love to do it. It's just a matter of us getting off our butts and doing it. Totally lazy! Our work ethic sucks, all of us." Asked whether or not Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and director McG would be back, the 33-year-old responded, "I mean I would love to do, but again [I] have no idea. It's not anything real. There's no tangible evidence in my life."

Words of potential "Charlie's Angels 3" were sparked by producers Nancy Juvonen and »

Review: G-Force

24 July 2009 11:15 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We live in a marvelous age, one where technological advancements have made it relatively easy to produce a film in which computer-generated guinea pigs interact seamlessly with flesh-and-blood humans. What's extraordinary is that a film can have all that and still be boring. Eighty years ago, people were delighted just to see movies talk. In 2009, you can watch animated rodents save the world and still think, "Meh. What else you got?"

G-Force is the subject, a harmless and good-natured family flick that unfortunately relies so much on its central conceit -- small animals have been trained as government spies!! -- that it forgets to do anything else. Take the animals out of the equation and you're left with an exceedingly generic secret-agent adventure -- which may be no surprise, given that the screenplay is by the husband-and-wife team of Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, who also wrote the National Treasure movies, »

Actor-turned-writer-turned-director Justin Theroux has signed on to helm Chief Ron, comedy from Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment about a conman who claims Mohegan ancestry in an attempt to open a casino. The comedy's inspiration is the true story of Chief Ron Roberts. His blonde hair and blue eyes raised skepticism over his ancestral claims but he prevailed in court and is now building a casino in upstate New York. Jordan Roberts (Around the Bend) penned the screenplay. Theroux takes the directing job after completing the script for Iron Man 2 for Marvel Entertainment and Paramount. Before that, he co-wrote and was an executive producer of Tropic Thunder. The project marks the first major studio directing job for Theroux, who made his helming debut on Dedication, a film that made its debut at 2007 Sundance before being released through the Weinstein Company. McG Headbutted by Bill Murray

4 June 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

"Terminator Salvation" director McG told The Guardian that he is no strangers to on-set rants (like Christian Bale's), admitting that Bull Murray previously headbutted him. "I don't think there's been a film I've made where there hasn't been some kind of physical fight," he said. "I've been headbutted by an A-list star. Square in the head. An inch lower and my nose would have been obliterated." He added: "I probably shouldn't - but it was Bill Murray. Y'know, it's a passionate industry." McG and Murray worked together on the original "Charlie's Angels" movie. Ironically, Murray withdrew from the sequel, "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," to be replaced by the late Bernie Mac. »

McG Headbutted By Murray

3 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Director McG was once headbutted by actor Bill Murray - in a fight which nearly broke the moviemaker's nose.

McG worked with the Ghostbusters star on 2000 film Charlie's Angels but the actor did not return for the subsequent sequel, 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

And McG claims his professional relationship with Murray was marred by a vicious fight, which ended in the star headbutting the director in the face.

McG says, "I don't think there's been a film I've made where there hasn't been some kind of physical fight. I mean, I've been headbutted by an A-list star. Square in the head. An inch later and my nose would have been obliterated. I probably shouldn't (reveal who it was).

Drew Barrymore Enjoying Quality Time With Alleged New Lover

It seems that Drew Barrymore is ready to date another man. The "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" actress was seen hanging out with a guy in Palm Springs, California on Monday, May 25. Drew and the unidentified man were spotted chatting and drinking ice tea.

Drew Barrymore split from Justin Long, her co-star on movie "He's Just Not That Into You", in July 2008. The couple broke up even though they were said planning to tie the knot the same year. "Drew Barrymore is ready to reboot her love life, the actress has split from Justin Long," Us Magazine reported.

Two months ago, Drew and Justin reportedly rekindled their love as they were rumored engaging in full Pda for hours at Hollywood hotspot Bar Marmont. However, the 34-year-old beauty soon denied the rumors admitting she was still single.

'Terminator Salvation' Conquers Its First Day

22 May 2009 8:54 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Opening wide across the U.S. on Thursday, May 21,"Terminator Salvation" was off to a solid start. The fourth installment of the "Terminator" series has dominated the Thursday's domestic sales, pulling in $13.4 million from 3,480 sites. The opening bow included the estimated $3 million from midnight showings.

"Terminator" opening tally is a bit more than half what "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opened to on the exact same day last year. If this McG-directed movie follows the same path as the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie, which went on to collect $152 million by the end of the five-day weekend, it is likely to garner around $70 million over the Memorial Day weekend regardless of strong competition from "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian".

While "Terminator" has been making its rounds in the big screens, another clip from the sci-fi thriller has been released via Yahoo! Movies. »

Movie Review: “Terminator Salvation”

21 May 2009 11:52 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: May 21, 2009

The players: Director: McG, Writers:Anthony E. Zuiker, John Brancato, Michael Ferris, Cast: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, Common

Facts of interest: McG also directed "Charlie's Angels," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "We Are Marshall."

The plot: John Connor (Christian Bale) leads the human resistance through the battle against the machines after Skynet has destroyed most of the world.

Our thoughts: Sure, McG’s “Terminator Salvation” is not as good as I expected, and it’s by far not as awesome as the new “Star Trek,” but I also admit I don’t really feel all the bad press the film’s been facing. I agree the fourth installment in the popular “Terminator” series has its problems, but to be honest, I found it quite entertaining. »

McG distances himself from third Charlie's Angels movie

21 May 2009 5:55 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Terminator Salvation director McG has appeared to rule out any interest in helming a third Charlie's Angels movie.

Franchise star Drew Barrymore and producing partner Nancy Juvonen are keen on a further Angels adventure and want Barbadian singer Rihanna (right) to join the team of female investigators.

The R&B star, who broke up with Chris Brown after being injured in a violent argument, is now reported to be dating Canadian rapper Drake.

Asked whether he was interested in a third movie, McG indicated he wanted to stay in the sci-fi genre.

He told Mania: "I haven't thought about it. I'm trying to grow and work in genres that I'm most comfortable working in.

"I got started in Charlie's Angels, and I wish them every success with another sequel, but these are the films that I grew up feeling very passionate about: Terminator, Blade Runner, the Kubrick pictures."

Discuss: What Did You Think of Terminator Salvation?

21 May 2009 4:49 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The wait is over. Wait, I think I used that for Star Trek, didn't I? Alright, this week the wait for another entry into the Terminator franchise is over, brought to you by the same guy who has delivered such gems as Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and We Are Marshall. In Terminator Salvation, John Connor is all grown up and he looks a lot like Batman, he's facing off with foes with faces new -- soon-to-be-mega action star Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright -- and old, and he's fighting to save the current live of his future father from the past, Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin). And chances are that if you saw it in theaters, you might actually know what all of that means. If you haven't seen it in theaters and you'd like a little primer, we've got you covered with the following articles: Terminator Salvation Theatrical Trailer The Movie Watcher's Guide to Terminator by Robert Fure »
