Steven Spielberg to Complete Crichton’s Last Work on Film

Steven Spielberg has a rare form of Hollywood sway, with the ability to develop pretty much any project he’d like to see come to the screen. It’s the sway that comes with a career of absolute blockbusters with failures few and far between. Sometimes, as in the case of A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, he uses it to fulfill the wishes of his friends like Stanley Kubrick, finishing a project from beyond the grave.

Now, he’s working on development for author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Timeline), a film version of his posthumously released novel Pirate Latitudes. The script will be written by David Koepp (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), while the actual novel will be available on November 24th.

Spielberg is producing the film, and may also direct.

Donald Sutherland and His Son Team Up for 'Love Child'

So you might have heard of a little project on the pike called The Love Child of Andy Warhol and Yoko Ono. Back in March, word hit that Rebecca Romijn and Donald Sutherland were starring in the film, and no, it wasn't going to be another wackily cast film like I'm Not There. It would tell the story of a man on parole 5 years after a heist gone wrong. Rather than moving forward on the straight and narrow, he is sucked back in by his former boss to make up for the botched heist. In his spare time, he makes these scrap sculptures that set the art world on fire, and he's caught between the crime and the art glory. In other words -- it has very little to link it to Andy and Yoko.

Winstone, Thewlis and Friel Join London Boulevard

Ray Winstone (Beowulf), David Thewlis (Timeline) and Anna Friel (Land of the Lost) are set to join Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell in London Boulevard, report the trades. The film marks the directorial debut of Departed screenwriter William Monahan. The film is based on the Ken Bruen novel of the same name. The story revolves around a South London criminal (Farrell) who, after release from prison, tries to give up the gangster life by becoming a handyman for a reclusive young actress (Knightley). Winstone will play a former crime boss. Thewlis will play the reclusive actress' agoraphobic business manager, while Friel will portray the criminal's sister. Along with The Departed, which earned him an Academy Award, Monahan wrote Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven and Body of Lies. The Twilight Saga: New Moon is picking up speed with its casting lately. Two New Michael Crichton Novels Found

HarperCollins is getting ready to publish two new novels written by the late author Michael Crichton, who died of cancer last year at 66. He was known for such hits as "Jurassic Park" and "ER." The action adventure "Pirate Latitudes" is set in Jamaica in 1665 and revolves around plans by a notorious pirate named Hunter and the governor of Jamaica to raid a Spanish galleon filled with treasure. The novel was written before Crichton's death and was discovered in his files by an assistant. HarperCollins plans a first printing of 1 million copies, with the novel set to hit stores on November 24th. The other book is a yet-to-be-titled technological thriller that was left unfinished by Crichton. It will be completed based on the writer's notes and released late next year. An author has not yet been hired to finish the work. Creative Artists Agency is handling the film and TV rights of the books. »

Hollywood Circling Two New Michael Crichton Books

Michael Crichton may be gone, but his work is still very much with us. The enduring author of such mega-hits as "The Andromeda Strain" and "Jurassic Park" has two pending properties that Hollywood is currently set to bid on.

According to Variety, HarperCollins is readying for publication two new novels written by the late author. The action adventure "Pirate Latitudes", set in Jamaica in 1665, hits store shelves Nov. 24, while a yet-to-be-titled technological thriller will bow late next year.

"Pirate Latitudes" was written before Crichton's death last year and discovered in his files by an assistant, while the untitled book will be completed based on the writer's notes.

"Latitudes" revolves around plans by a notorious pirate named Hunter and the governor of Jamaica to raid a Spanish galleon filled with treasure.

The temporary score (a collection of pre-existing music utilized during the editing) is a controversial creative aid which was first utalized by the editors to keep some rhythm to their works. Today the job of producing and editing temporary track is a whole job onto itself. The Adjustment Bureau Picked Up By Universal

The Hollywood Reporter says that Universal Pictures has signed on to produce The Adjustment Bureau, which has Matt Damon attached to the lead role. The Bourne Ultimatum writer George Nolfi has written the script for The Adjustment Bureau and will also make his directorial debut with the film. The sci-fi action movie stars Damon as a politician who falls for a ballerina, only to find that mysterious forces are keeping the two apart. The Adjustment Bureau is loosely based on a Philip K. Dick short story. Aside from The Bourne Ultimatum, Damon and Nolfi have worked together before on Ocean’s Twelve, as actor and writer, respectively. Universal Acquires The Adjustment Bureau

Universal Pictures is finalizing a deal with Media Rights Capital for The Adjustment Bureau, a contemporary love story with sci-fi overtones that was written and will be directed by George Nolfi, his directorial debut. Matt Damon is attached to star and the project was shopped around to potential studios last week. In Bureau, Damon will play David Norris, a charismatic congressman who seems destined for national political stardom. He meets a beautiful ballet dancer named Elise Sellas, only to find strange circumstances keeping their sparks from catching fire. Norris discovers forces are at work to keep them apart, and he peels the layers to find out why. The action takes place all over Manhattan.
