The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Predictions 2010 Sundance Film Festival: Araki, Soderbergh, Winterbottom

Secret Identity: Who Should Play Catwoman In 'Batman 3'?

5 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In all likelihood, we're still quite a ways off from any real news regarding a third "Batman" movie from director Christopher Nolan—if he's even returning to the franchise, that is—but that's not stopping us from wondering which Dark Knight villain we should see in the inevitable sequel.

There's no shortage of rogues to choose from, but the one I think is an absolute necessity is Catwoman. Given the state of Bruce Wayne's life after the events of "The Dark Knight," this feels like the perfect time to introduce Selina Kyle—the woman who could either help mend Bruce's fences, or bring all of the walls tumbling down.

If Nolan, David Goyer and the other folks at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. decide to go the Catwoman route, I think that these five actresses would be great for the role.

Alessandro Nivola: All-American, Always European

5 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Actor Alessandro Nivola has something he'd like people to know: He's not British. Nor French, Italian, Irish, or Australian. As he told me last week, he'd forgive you for thinking otherwise, but in real life, Nivola's just a regular old Boston native who speaks with an utterly neutral voice.

Of course, Nivola himself would be the first to admit he's made things difficult for people. In his biggest roles, he's employed some sort of odd voice or accent (typically a British one, as in Laurel Canyon or Mansfield Park) and he shows off two more in theaters now: In the new film Turning Green, he's an Irish thug, and in Coco Before Chanel, he plays a Brit who speaks in fluent French throughout the picture. Do people in the industry ever forget that he's an American? "American?" laughed the affable actor. "When have people ever thought that about me?" »

Kate Beckinsale Braves The Freezing Cold For 'Whiteout'

'I had not been in minus-50-degree weather before, and it was surprisingly cold,' the actress says.

Los Angeles — Although she was born into a respected British acting family and got her big break in an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," Kate Beckinsale has always been blessed — or cursed — with a knack for genre films. While films like "The Golden Bowl," "Nothing but the Truth" and "Laurel Canyon" have underperformed, the "Underworld" films have coupled with "Van Helsing" to make her the queen of fanged, sexy cinema.

This week, Beckinsale returns with "Whiteout," an ice-cold thriller based on the beloved 1998 comic book of the same name. Although she's traded in her leather bodysuit for a burly winter coat, geeks will still drool over her take on U.S. »

Christian Bale's Rollercoaster Career

4 July 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

From Pacman to Public Enemies, he's had more ups and downs than most other actors of his generation. Christian Bale has careened between extreme highs and deep lows, in the view of the folks at MovieFill, and they decided that a rollercoaster was the most apt visual metaphor for his career. A reduced-size version can be seen above.

They squeeze most of his films into the chart, though they left out a few. Before his sensational role in Mary Harron's American Psycho, he was very appealing in Metroland and got good notices in Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine; pre-Batman Begins / The Dark Knight, he was fun to watch as a frisky villain in John Singleton's Shaft and an uptight, would-be psychiatrist in Laurel Canyon. I don't agree with every notation in the chart. Harsh Times, for example, is cited as one of his "lows," but Bale was riveting. »

Julianne Moore + Annette Bening. Rejoice!

2 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Lisa Cholodenko is flirting with me*. How else to explain the multi-orgasmic news that the writer/director of High Art, one of my all time favorite lesbian movies, is making another and she's making it with two actresses whom I practically can't worship more than I already do? Yesterday, production supposedly began on The Kids Are All Right which will star Julianne Moore and Annette Bening as lovers who've raised two kids together. Their two teenagers (played by Josh Hutcherson and Alice in Wonderland herself Mia Wasikowska) decide to meet the original sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo).

Psycho, The Hours, Running With Scissors

Both actresses have played lesbians before. Moore re-interpreted Psycho's Lila Crane as a record shop dyke and she definitely didn't want to sleep with her husband in The Hours Come to bed, Laura BrownFor Bening's part she ditched her screen husband for some self-actualizing labia time in Running With Scissors. »

Ruffalo Lends Bening and Moore Some Sperm

1 July 2009 12:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

What do you get when you mix Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo in a comedy? A same-sex couple and one eager sperm donor. (Bet you weren't expecting that!) Variety reports that the trio, plus Josh Hutcherson (Bridge to Terabithia) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), will star in a new film called The Kids Are All Right.

Bening and Moore are playing a couple who long ago used donated sperm to start a family. Years later, when their son and daughter (Hutcherson and Wasikowska) have grown up, they want to find the man behind the sperm. So, they hunt down Ruffalo's character, and he "totally upsets their family dynamic once he enters their lives."

This project is coming from Lisa Cholodenko, which bodes particularly well for the already-unique story. You might remember that she's the writer and director of Laurel Canyon, one of the few films to show »

Sperm Donor Comes Between Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in Kids

1 July 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

· High Art and Laurel Canyon director Lisa Cholodenko is returning to the lesbian plot well, beginning production this week on The Kids Are All Right. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore star as longtime partners, each with kids by the same sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo); their lives are upended when the kids want to meet the father and he winds up involved with Moore's character. Could be a riot, right? Except Anne Thompson reports it's a drama with a sexy script, and now I'm just kind of baffled. Only about seven months to wait until it probably bows at Sundance, though; we'll report back then. [Variety]

Bening, Moore and Ruffalo Prove that 'The Kids Are All Right'

1 July 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Oscar nominated thesps Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo have been confirmed, while Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska have been added to Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right - which is the filmmaker's first film since 2002’s Laurel Canyon. Filming is currently underway in Los Angeles. Scripted by Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg (The Girl Next Door), this revolves around Joni (Wasikowska) and Laser (Hutcherson) who set out to find their same-sex parents' sperm donor. Shortly after Joni’s 18th birthday, she and her brother are finally introduced to Paul, whose new presence causes antipathy amongst the close-knit family. Bening and Moore play the parents (Nic and Jules), and Ruffalo (who just completed his directorial debut which I predict should play at Tiff this Fall) plays the donor named Paul. Variety reports that production company backers include: Antidote Films' Jeffrey Levy-Hinte (he produced Cholodenko's Canyon and High Art »

Moore and Bening go gay in 'The Kids Are All Right'

1 July 2009 1:35 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Every once in a while a talented director gets another chance and after seven years, Lisa Cholodenko seems to be getting her.  After a strong breakout with the Ally Sheedy comeback "High Art" (which Sheedy promptly wasted any goodwill from) , the filmmaker stumbled with 2002's "Laurel Canyon" which featured Christian Bale and Kate Beckinsale before they achieved star status.  Now, seven years later, she's returning with "The Kids Are All Right" and recruiting an intriguing cast along the way.Variety reports Oscar nominees Julianne Moore and Anne Bening will star in "All Right" along with Mark Ruffalo and up and »

Mark Ruffalo to Play Sperm Donor for Bening and Moore’s ‘Kids’

1 July 2009 12:28 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I never pretended to be a classy writer. Even with a PhD, I don't really think of myself as above using the word sperm in a title to grab attention. What I'm doing here is a public service - you want to know all about movies that involve sperm, and I aim to share that with you. No need to thank me. Just doing my job here. Luckily, my title isn't all that sensational, since it technically (and totally succinctly) sums up the latest project for Mark Ruffalo, Julianne Moore and Annette Bening. According to Variety, the trio will star in The Kids Are All Right, a story about two siblings (played by Josh Hutcherson (that kid who plays every male kid ever) and Mia Wasikowska (who hopefully won't be too shell-shocked after coming off the set of Burton's Alice in Wonderland)) who seek out the man who provided the sperm that turned into them. Total Recall: Christian Bale's Best Movies

21 May 2009 1:30 AM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

Ten years ago, Christian Bale was known mainly to fans of early 1990s cult classic Disney musicals -- or as "that guy who was the kid in Empire of the Sun" -- but after spending the early part of his career in movies that either targeted niche audiences (Laurel Canyon, Velvet Goldmine) or failed to connect with mainstream ones (Reign of Fire), Bale has undergone a remarkable leading-man makeover, to the point where he's now not only Batman, but an actor whose mere presence is enough to soothe pre-release fanboy griping about a movie as highly anticipated as this week's »
