In episode one, a computer screen list showing the names of potential jury members contains the names of fourteen characters from "The Bill" (1984). They are Reg Hollis, Nick Klein, Duncan Lennox, Debbie McAllister, Jack Meadows, Andrew Monroe, Dave Quinnan, Kass (sic) Rickman, Paul Riley, Vic Singh, Kate Spears, Roz Clarke, Tony Stamp and Des Taviner. The scripting of the case which is central to "The Jury" is certainly interesting. The story is structured in a manner which leaves no room for guilty-not guilty verdict in any which way. Nonetheless, many viewers will make a very strong decision one way or the other.
There's a slight problem with the structure, perhaps. The sidelining stories are all interesting, giving good background to the story. However, those jurors whose stories are not told are rather conspicuous. When the final two episodes roll around, we are finally introduced to the remaining jury members, and are somewhat at a disadvantage for not knowing them.
I would venture to say that all actors concerned give very good performances. The real standout for me is Gerard Butler. His conflicted emotions and social discomfort really draws you in. Stuart Bunce is excellent as well. He faces similar challenges in life as Butler, but for different reasons. Perhaps it is a little unlikely that so many of the jurors shame similar emotion states, but I suppose it makes for good drama.
Overall, it's a highly engaging series, with excellent acting and scripting. If you get hooked early on, you're likely to enjoy the entire run.
