More Wolfman Crew Shuffling as New Editors Are Brought In

17 November 2009 6:21 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

And Universal's The Wolfman continues down a bumpy road toward its February 12, 2010, release date. On the editing front Dennis (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Fog-2005 version) Virkler is apparently out, and Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch are in.

Goldblatt started out strong with The Howling, Halloween II, The Terminator (1 and 2), and he most recently worked on X-Men: The Last Stand and G-Force. Murch did editing and sound work on such diverse fare as Apocalypse Now, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Godfather: Part III, and Jarhead.

The news was somewhat buried in a Variety article, but /Film did a good job fleshing it out. At this point we can only wonder about director Joe Johnston’s day-to-day involvement with the picture after all the myriad changes it's undergone, and as more details are made available, we'll pass them on.

Thor Cast Adds Two More

24 September 2009 2:43 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Kenneth Branagh has added two more names to his growing Thor cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore are joining the comic book adaptation, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Thor's half-brother and arch-nemesis Loki, Brian Blessed as Thor and Loki's father Odin, and Natalie Portman as Thor's human love interest Jane Foster.

Alexander, best known for her work on ABC Family's Kyle Xy, will play Sif, an Asgardian warrior and one of Thor's love interests. Feore, seen recently on 24 and not-so-recently in The Chronicles of Riddick, is playing an unspecified character, though it is believed that he will play a villain. Perhaps even Feore doesn't know the character, since neither he nor Alexander are being sent a script.

Director Kenneth Branagh has cast two more actors in his forthcoming Marvel Studios adaptation of “Thor.” According to THR, those actors are Jaimie Alexander (Kyle Xy, Rest Stop) and Colm Feore (Chicago, 24, The Chronicles of Riddick).

They will join Chris Hemsworth, already cast as Thor; Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, the god of mischief who serves as the movie’s villain; and Natalie Portman is Thor’s human love, Jane Foster.

Alexander is set to play Thor’s Asgardian ally, the Lady Sif, who will vie for the Thunder God’s affections with the mortal Jane Foster (Portman). Feore’s character is shrouded in mystery — the studio isn’t even sending the actors the script — though it is known to be a villain.

Thor Throws Down the Hammer on Colm Feore and Jaimie Alexander

22 September 2009 9:51 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Marvel’s “Thor” just picked up a couple more actors to swing with Thor and his mighty hammer (that’s not slang; the hammer’s name is Mjolner; it’s a mythological weapon).  Tonight we’ve learned that Colm Feore (”24″, “The Chronicles of Riddick”) and Jaimie Alexander (”Kyle Xy”) are joining Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston in the story of the “powerful but arrogant warrior of Asgard whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.”  Hit the jump to see how the fresh blood enters the fray.

According to THR, Alexander would play Sif, a skilled Asgardian who can hold her own against any man. »

'Thor' Cast Gets Two

21 September 2009 9:26 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The cast surrounding Marvel’s God of Thunder continues to develop.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jaimie Alexander and Canadian actor Colm Feore are the latest additions to Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Thor. Alexander will play Sif, an Asgardian warrior who can hold her own against any man, and the romantic rival of Natalie Portman‘s character.

Feore’s role, meanwhile, is being kept top-secret, although it is rumored he will be playing a villain alongside Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.

Thor revolves around a mighty yet arrogant warrior who, as punishment for re-igniting an ancient war, is cast down to Earth to live among humans. Along with learning humility and how to be a true hero, he falls in love with a mortal woman named Jane Foster (Portman) and saves the world. Thor is one of several Marvel Comics movie adaptations expected to dovetail into the 2012 release, The Avengers.

Where The Wild Things Are Video Game Trailer

21 September 2009 10:34 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I dread video games based off movies.  They’re cheap cash-ins on major movies so that when kids like the movie, parents are in for some pleading and whining until they shell out the $30 - $60 for a crappy game that the studio wanted to hit shelves as fast as possible so it could coincide with the movie’s release date.  I can only think of two good videogames based off movies: “Goldeneye007″ and “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay” so for all of the movie-based video games ever released, there have been two worth buying.  There’s a ratio that inspires confidence.

Below you’ll find the trailer for the video game of “Where the Wild Things Are”.  I don’t know if this will be the third good video game movie-adaptation but I do know that my excitement for the film is so far ahead of »

Reed’s Bargain Bin: Babylon A.D.

14 September 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Even though Film Junk followers would probably prefer to read current Tiff film reviews than a review of an older science fiction film, I have decided to submit this review of “Babylon A.D.” And at the risk of further enforcing the view that I have a poor taste in films, my review is generally a favorable one in contrast to popular opinion. I was aware that this film did poorly at the box office, but I didn’t realize how many bad reviews this film received until after I had watched the film and checked out the reviews on the Internet. The reason why I watched this film is that I try to watch all the high profile science fiction movies regardless of audience reception. »

xXx 3 Gets a New Director

26 August 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

News has surfaced, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, stating that a new director has been found for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, the third installment in Columbia Pictures’ action series. Last year both star Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen (director of the first installment) agreed to join forces for a third film, but in June this year Cohen bailed to direct Medieval. The new director is Ericson Core (Invincible), who’s worked with Diesel before as the Cinematographer on The Fast and the Furious.

Diesel starred in the original xXx back in 2002, but both he and director Cohen skipped the second film, xXx: State of the Union, starring Ice Cube and directed by Lee Tamahori.

Diesel was somewhat of a hot name at the time of xXx, but for some reason he thought it best to skip both the sequel and two of the Fast and the Furious »

Urban villain to stalk manga movie Priest

21 August 2009 8:47 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Karl Urban has taken the lead villain’s role in Priest, Screen Gems’ film version of the TokyoPop manga. He’ll take on the vampire-battling priest played by Paul Bettany, a sheriff portrayed by Twilight’s Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q’s warrior priestess in the postapocalyptic scenario.

To be directed by Scott Stewart (who also helmed Screen Gems’ upcoming Legion) from a script by Cory Goodman, Priest casts Urban as Black Hat, himself a former priest/bloodsucker slayer who has been turned, and now considers himself a vampire god. The New Zealand-born actor, recently seen as Dr. McCoy in Star Trek, has a long genre résumé that includes The Irrefutable Truth About Demons, Ghost Ship, The Chronicles Of Riddick, Doom and the second and third Lord Of The Rings features; he recently wrapped the remake of And Soon The Darkness. Karl Urban Is A Bloodsucking Bastard

21 August 2009 12:14 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Karl Urban, legend, has been cast as the villain in Priest, Scott Stewart’s vampire Western follow-up to his eagerly anticipated apocalyptic thriller, Legion.Like Legion, Priest will star Paul Bettany, as a warrior priest living in a world dominated by bloodsucking fiends, who teams up with Cam Gigandet’s sheriff and Maggie Q’s priestess to find his niece, after she’s kidnapped by Urban’s band of vampires.Urban’s character, a former priest turned vampire and general nutjob, is called Black Hat, after the grand old Western tradition that the good guys wear white hats, the bad guys black. We can’t decide whether that’s wonderfully knowing, or horribly on-the-nose, but we’ll give Stewart the benefit of the doubt, based entirely on that six minutes of Legion footage that did the rounds at Comic-Con.Although his most famous roles, Eomer in (two-thirds of) the Lotr »

Film: Review:a Perfect Getaway

6 August 2009 12:04 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

David Twohy is a veteran of Hollywood genre fare, having tried his hand as screenwriter or writer-director on thrillers of all stripes—on land (The Fugitive, G.I. Jane), by sea (Below, Waterworld), and from outer space (Pitch Black, The Chronicles Of Riddick, The Arrival). He rarely does more than deliver on expectations, but he knows the conventions of genre material enough to exploit them to clever effect. Twohy’s latest effort, A Perfect Getaway, is akin to a magician doing a trick with all the cards face up, asking the audience to trust what they see while he pulls ... »

A Perfect Getaway from…Hollywood

5 August 2009 4:56 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Writer/director David Twohy is no stranger to the Hollywood system. Having toiled in it for just about 20 years now, he has become accustomed to the differences and contrasting accessibilities of large films vs. small. And since his much-hyped sci-fi epic The Chronicles Of Riddick was poorly received at the box office upon its 2004 release, he set out to follow up with something on a much smaller scale. While his new thriller, Rogue Pictures’ A Perfect Getaway, does have lush, sweeping landscapes and a cast of recognizable names, it’s very much about character as well, and its one-island setting is a great departure from the otherworldly expansiveness of Riddick.

“The original plan was to do a small movie, for me,” says Twohy, who also helmed the sci-fi sleepers The Arrival and Pitch Black. “This was sort of a reaction to big-budget, big-scale filmmaking. I wanted to do something smaller, »

The Mutant Chronicles (DVD Review)

4 August 2009 2:54 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

This review also appears on our Starlog website...

Mutant Chronicles tries to be The Dirty Dozen meets Aliens but it’s really more like Pearl Harbor meets The Chronicles Of Riddick. In case you couldn’t guess, that’s Not a compliment. It’s out today from Magnolia (reviewed from the $26.98 single-disc DVD; also available as a $29.98 two-disc Collector’s Edition DVD; $34.98 Blu-ray).

Director Simon Hunter and screenwriter Philip Eisner haven’t been prolific in the last decade. Hunter hasn’t helmed a feature since 2000’s Lighthouse (a decent horror movie) and Eisner has only added Firestarter: Rekindled to his credits since penning Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon. Perhaps both have gotten a little rusty over the years, because Mutant Chronicles is a boring, flavorless, sermonic flick that dulls with its repetitive, exhausting “action” sequences and tiresome, pedagogical passages on the values of religious conviction and blind faith.

It’s the 28th Century, »

Third 'Riddick' Movie Won't Be PG-13

3 August 2009 12:58 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

There won't be a PG-13 rating for "The Chronicles of Riddick" sequel if director David Twohy has it his way. During an interview with Shock Till You Drop while promoting psychological thriller "A Perfect Getaway", the filmmaker explained that he and "The Chronicles of Riddick" star Vin Diesel are aiming to make another R-rated movie with the follow-up film.

"I've sketched out two ideas for the next installment," Twohy shared during the interview. "Vin and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there's some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with 'Riddick' that we shouldn't have made."

"We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, »

Steve Zahn in board shorts? The horror. But wait, the terror in A Perfect Getaway actually comes from the menace of Timothy Olyphant, which isn't all that surprising but still quite welcome. Videogame Review: The Chronicles Of Riddick – Assault On Dark Athena -- Matt thinks it's a good value but you may want to hold off on purchasing it

2 May 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Matt Goldberg There are only two games I can think of that are better than the movie they're adapted from. One is "Goldeneye007" for the Nintendo64 and the other is "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay" for the original XBox. In fact, I think "Butcher Bay" may be the best "Riddick" story we've had in all of his "chronicles". It's the one that best establishes him as a brutal anti-hero and sadly, while "Pitch Black" also accepted that tone, it's been diminished with 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick" and now "Assault on Dark Athena". It's a good character and a far better one that Diesel's ludicrous xXx but the attempts to soften him up by protecting children and calling himself a monster like some sad emo child aren't deserving of this anti-hero. However, after a five-year absence, it is good ... »
