From Paris With Love

25 November 2009 7:54 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Since his career resurrection in 1994, John Travolta’s hits have dried up a great deal. He’s still A-list, but he’s coasting on past successes. Could Luc Besson and Pierre Morel be providing him with a new hit? From Paris With Love, judging from the excellent trailer, looks set to give Travolta a needed boost. Even the poster looks great!

Travolta (with shaved head and goatee) teams up with Jonathan Rhys Meyers for an action-comedy in which two CIA operatives cause destruction and mayhem in the city of lights (to stop a terrorist attack!) Written by French cinema icon Besson and directed by Taken’s Pierre Morel, this looks like breezy, good fun. Since quitting the directing lark, Besson has made a name for himself writing and producing action flicks with a strong French flavour. The Transporter series and last year’s kick-ass Taken have provided international cinema with »

'Red Cliff' is John Woo's Best Action Epic in Over a Decade

24 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Film geeks still slaver over the early output of John Woo such as Hard Boiled and The Killer for their devotion to style and fantastic action sequences. However, the mid-90s and early aughts brought disappointment in the director for his less-than-stellar fare including Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle Hard Target, the shockingly bad Mission: Impossible II, and the forgettable Philip K. Dick adaptation Paycheck. But with exhilarating, epic action reminiscent of both Braveheart and Hero, the ancient Chinese war film Red Cliff restores Woo to the hall of the hallowed. It has the director's trademark style in spades, but it never skimps on story or character development.

Red Cliff is the most expensive movie in Asian cinema history, and it's easy to see where the money went. Countless actors in period costumes, numerous special effects shots, and impeccable sound all contribute to a masterfully created film that matches Hollywood's high standards with its impressive visuals. »

'Clash of the Titans' Trailer Now Online!

10 November 2009 4:30 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In a scant twelve years, Louis Leterrier has gone from being a production assistant on Alien: Resurrection to directing what has just, with a single trailer, become one of my most anticipated films of 2010: Warner Brothers' remake of Clash of the Titans. Sure, he has progressively proven himself a champion of the fantastic, evolving from The Transporter series to last year's The Incredible Hulk, but as much as I've been impressed by his eye for spectacle thus far, I wasn't ready for how fun his take on Titans looks. It's just our first look, but I couldn't stop smiling by the end of this teaser.

And yet, I don't know why I should be so surprised. The original is, after all, a landmark fantasy film packed with Ray Harryhausen's indelible stop-motion imagery. Add on Leterrier commanding a great cast ranging from Liam Neeson to Ralph Fiennes to Sam Worthington, »

Fantastic Fest Review: District 13: Ultimatum

8 October 2009 9:37 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Speed, agility, violence: Parkour, it's not just something that gets parodied on The Office, it's the way of the French. Rather, it is the way of building jumper turned action star David Belle and French martial artist Cyril Raffaelli, both of whom were made famous by their performances in the Luc Besson produced, Pierre Morel directed District B13. In 2004, this fast-paced, high-flying actioner took the world of genre cinema by storm, unleashing Parkour upon the world. It has since been seen in other films such as Casino Royale and Live Free or Die Hard. And if you've seen it in any of these movies, you know how impressive this efficient mode of obstacle navigation can be. Then again, if you haven't seen it in District B13 or its subsequent sequel, District 13: Ultimatum, then I would argue that you ain't seen nothin' yet. Flash forward to 2009. Director Pierre Morel has moved on to direct the Liam Neeson »

From Paris With Love dir. Pierre Morel (new film / trailer) (Mixed Media)

22 September 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | PopMatters | See recent PopMatters news »

From Paris With Love Director: Pierre Morel Cast: John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Melissa Mars Opening: 5 February 2010 Distributor: Lionsgate Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a greenhorn at the U.S. Ambassador's office, and John Travolta is a (possibly crooked) secret agent. The movie algebra on this one is pretty transparent: take the inverse of Training Day, subtract any modicum of authenticity, and add as many explosions as possible. The bouncing brass and rakish shuffle of the soundtrack, the Bond-aping title, and the references to The Transporter strongly suggest that this film is all shot, no powder. Travolta plays what might… »

New Trailer for ‘From Paris with Love’

21 September 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Following John Travolta’s film career is like watching a screaming child on a roller coaster. He looks like he’s having a lot of fun, but after a while, you begin to realize he’s just screaming to get your attention. We all remember when he was having fun in Grease, and then years later when he wasn’t in Battlefield Earth.

On that note, a new trailer for From Paris With Love has hit the webs and looks to be a bit of everything. There’s the girl-candy Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, there’s fight scenes for the dudes, explosions for the kids, and lots of innuendo for people who like that kind of thing. And then there’s John Travolta, who for some reason looks quite a lot like Denzel Washington. Could it be that this role was originally meant for Denzel and Travolta has that good of an agent? »

Lords Day coming

30 July 2009 6:14 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Terrorists taking over the British House of Lords have to contend with one parliament member who happens to be a former special ops. Think Die Hard: With A Crumpet. That is the premise of The Lords Day, courtesy of screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen who I must admit did a kick-ass job on the highly-profitable Liam Neeson thriller Taken, and managed to find three shirtless-fighting jobs for The Transporter. Surprisingly enough, Sony Pictures hopes to sprawl a new franchise with this one as... »

Stone Cold, Brian Bosworth and the Lost Art of the Action Movie

23 July 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

A security camera reveals the interior of an empty supermarket. The grainy black and white image is shattered when a grizzly figure wearing a cut off muscle T and a greasy ponytail smashes the lens with the butt of a gun. Four thugs are robbing the supermarket with automatic weapons and they’re taking the cashiers hostage. In all the commotion, the automatic door opens. A pan up reveals leather boots, stonewashed jeans, a tank top, a leather trench coat and then, the mullet. You’ve seen this NFL-sized mullet get drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1987. You’ve seen this mullet being dragged into the end zone by Bo Jackson. The bleached blonde mullet belongs to classic NFL bust Brian Bosworth. While the Boz couldn’t get it done on the field, in 1991, he made short work of the supermarket thieves, a gang of bikers, and Lance Hendriksen in his action movie debut, »

Pierre Morel to Direct Universal’s Pursuit

15 July 2009 10:34 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Pierre Morel, director of the action hit Taken and the French parkour flick District B13, has signed on to direct Pursuit, an action thriller centering around the early career of conflict photographer Jason Howe. Universal has acquired the life rights to Howe, who fell in love with a woman while on assignment in Colombia, only to discover she was an assassin. A search is currently underway for a writer. Morel, who before becoming a director spent a long career as a camera operator and cinematographer on films such as The Transporter, Danny the Dog and War, was drawn by Howe's courageous photo work, and saw his real-life ethical dilemma as strong inspiration for a fictionalized thriller. Morel is currently in post production on the John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers action flick From Paris With Love, which is due out early next year. The director also recently signed on to »

Remo Williams Returns in The Destroyer

9 July 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Wow, I have to admit, this is exciting news. I was a big fan of the ’80s movie “Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins”, starring Fred Ward as a cop who is “killed” but is reborn as the super Government agent Remo Williams (and co-starring former Star Trek: Voyager Captain Kate Mulgrew, natch). He’s trained by a tiny Chinese dude and eventually goes on missions. I think the movie was supposed to launch a franchise, but it didn’t really do that well at the box office, thus no franchise was born, though it did launch a short-lived 1988 TV show. Flash-forward to 2009, and producers Charles Roven and Steve Chasman are planning to bring Remo back to the big screen in what is no doubt the first of a planned franchise. The Risky Biz Blog reports that Roven and Chasman, who have worked on “The Dark Knight” and “The Transporter” between them, »

Columbia Pictures Likes The Destroyer

8 July 2009 6:52 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from Risky Biz Blog it seems that Producers Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Steve Chasman (The Transporter) will be making The Destroyer. The project is set up at Columbia.

This film will bring back the '80s action hero Remo Williams. The script will be written by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides.

The first books in the Destroyer series were penned by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. They followed the character of Williams, a New Jersey police officer who is convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Williams gets the electric chair, but his death is a lie so that he can be reborn as the vigilante character the Destroyer. He joins a secret assassin squad that is set up by the government.

With the help of an Asian assassin, Chiun, Williams goes after criminals and the people who framed him.

[DVD Review] Taken

18 May 2009 9:03 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

How far would you go to save a loved one? What would you do? Who would you kill? Asking these questions, Taken originally opened in Europe before its Us release; Parisian crowds were ecstatic for the brutal vision of director Pierre Morel and writer Luc Besson. But American audiences didn’t get to share in that vision. What came to American theaters was a limping watered down version of the film – consequently, critical and audience reception suffered. The Blu-ray release of Taken rectifies the theatrical mistake and gives audiences the choice between more or less brutality.

Tony Leung (Hero, Hard Boiled, Chungking Express, Fighting for love) is Richard Ma, an extremely wealthy businessman who is unpleasantly tight fisted and stingy. A chance meeting with a beautiful stock broker named Ah Choi, played by Shu Qi (The Eye 2, The Transporter) sets off a chain of events that will hopefully see the Richard change his selfish ways.
