X-Men: The Last Stand: What Could Have Been

13 hours ago | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Brett Ratner is tired of defending his directorial work in X-Men: The Last Stand, but fans continue to wonder what might have been if Bryan Singer had finished his X-Men trilogy, instead of defecting to Superman Returns. Michael Dougherty, the screenwriter for X2: X-Men United who joined Singer's defection, explained his ideas for X3 to Slashfilm in a recent podcast (transcribed by TheGeekFiles).

You found out was that Phoenix [(Famke Janssen)] was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god, which they did in X3. She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was sick of the fighting and she was going to take things into her own hands and she did not give a s**t what the X-Men or the Brotherhood had to say about it.

'X2' Screenwriter Describes The 'X-Men 3' He And Bryan Singer Would Have Made

20 hours ago | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Several fans have wondered what "X-Men: The Last Stand" would've looked like with Bryan Singer at the helm as opposed to eventual director Brett Ratner, particularly after the latter filmmaker's recent comments towards his detractors. Well, wonder no more.

In an interview with Slash Film (as transcribed by The Geek Files), "X2: X-Men United" screenwriter Michael Dougherty described his and Singer's unused plans for "X-Men 3."

According to the writer, the film would have focused on Jean Grey's transformation into the Phoenix, albeit much differently than the version ultimately seen in "The Last Stand."

"You found out was that Phoenix was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god," described the screenwriter. "She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was sick of the fighting and she was going »

X2 scribe Michael Dougherty details his vision for X-Men 3

9 November 2009 4:59 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Screenwriter Michael Dougherty has given more details about the ideas he had suggested to Bryan Singer for the third X-Men movie.

Dougherty co-wrote Singer's highly-regarded X2: X-Men United with Dan Harris before all three left the mutant movie series to make Superman Returns.

Fox then hired writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg and director Brett Ratner and the result was 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

A year ago, I reported on a book called Mutant Cinema: The X-Men Trilogy From Comics to Screen, which included some of Dougherty's ideas for an alternative version of the third film. (Click here to read that earlier article).

Now, in a new interview on Slashfilm to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of Halloween-themed anthology Trick 'r Treat (pictured), his first directing effort, Dougherty has elaborated on what he wanted to do in the third X-movie had he stayed with the franchise. He speaks on a podcast, »

Diy Marvel Mutant: X-Men Fan Creates Wrist-Mounted Flamethrower

4 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Yeah, so file this one under "Don't Try This At Home," kids. Self-professed X-Men fan Everett Bradford recently posted video of a wrist-mounted flamethrower he created to mimic the powers of Pyro, the Marvel mutant created in the '80s by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

Able to manipulate flame and hurl it around in much the same way Bobby "Iceman" Drake handles the frozen stuff, Pyro made an appearance in both "X2: X-Men United" and "X-Men: The Last Stand," played by Aaron Stanford. In the case of Bradford's real-life "Prometheus Device," however, the wearer is able to generate large bursts of flame from an assembly that wraps around one's wrist and forearm (sorta like Spider-Man's web-shooters).

According to Bradford's YouTube site, it took him eight months to build the device—but I can't help wondering how much it cost him in burn cream and bandages, too. Owch!

DVD Round Up, Oct. 30, 2009: ‘Sauna,’ ‘The Tournament,’ ‘The Butcher’

30 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Many editions of the DVD Round-Up have featured a different genre and focus for each title within it. This week seems a little more thematically linked as we have a trio of foreign horror films and a few more independent films than usual. Of course, there has to a holiday comedy to spice things up.

Consider this column informational with synopsis, tech specs, and special features info for titles that might go otherwise unnoticed, but if you’re looking for more critical opinion, we covered “Sauna” when it played at the EU Film Fest, “Medicine For Melancholy” when it was available on IFC Direct, and “Nothing Like the Holidays” when it played in theaters.

“P” and “The Tournament” were released on October 20th, 2009

Claws for concern? A Blu-ray review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine

25 October 2009 6:00 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK last Monday, 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine has already broken records for disc sales in the USA.

Over the past week, I've been steadily working my way through the Blu-ray with its hours of bonus features.

Wolverine has been a somewhat controversial project. There were persistent rumours of production troubles; an unfinished version of the movie was leaked online a month before its cinema release; and when it did come out, it was clawed by critics and received mostly negative reviews.

Some have said the DNA of the 20th Century Fox franchise has mutated into a mess or even a monstrosity.

So what's it like? Is this a Blu-ray worth adding to your collection? Well, let's find out...

Trick 'R TREATing with Michael Dougherty

24 October 2009 10:29 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

At the 2009 Big Apple Comic Con, horror movie enthusiasts were treated with the screening of writer/director Michael Dougherty’s anthology film, Trick R Treat. After the screening, the filmmaker answered numerous questions from the audience.

The history of Sam, the film’s mysterious protagonist wearing a burlap pumpkin mask, began as a hand-drawn character Dougherty made himself. Sam was then brought to life in his animated short film, Season’S Greetings. After placing the same individual in other stories, Dougherty finally established Sam in his feature film, which would serve as a tribute to the 80’s horror movies that mixed comedy and scares.

An inquisitive audience member asked Dougherty why the film was in development hell for so long. He responded by explaining that his work was considered a weird movie for the studio. The movie did test well with viewers in screenings, but it was not enough to build the studio’s confidence. »

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen I know I shouldn't be surprised the Blu-ray, 2-disc DVD and single-disc DVD are the numbers 1, 2 and 3 best-sellers at Amazon this week, but for some reason I would have thought all the negative talk about this film surrounding its release would have discouraged folks to throw to down their hard-earned cash to endure this pummeling one more time. However, I can say it is nice to see prices on Blu-rays are dropping slightly, so much to the point the Blu-ray edition of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is actually $3 less than the 2-disc DVD, at only $19.99. That's all I really have to say about this one. Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection) I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one (read that here) and was really impressed with the entire package, which not only includes Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, »

X-Men and Deadpool Updates from Producer

19 October 2009 8:07 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Empire Magazine had the chance to sit down with X-Men producer Lauren Shuler-Donner about the upcoming origin stories, prequels, and spin-offs coming from Marvel’s mutant world.

Shuler-Donner confirms Hugh Jackman will be headed to Japan to shoot on location for X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, or whatever the title will eventually be.  The comic book storyline centers on the clawed mutant falling for Mariko Yashida, the heiress to the Yakuza crime family.

Wolverine will be fighting in a different style to what we’ve seen before,” she said, indicating a battle between him and Mariko’s father, Shingen Yashida.  It will involve “samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts — mano-a-mano, extreme fighting.” This plot also suggests a possible showdown with mutant supervillain Silver Samurai, but maybe I’m just stretching it.  After all, who doesn’t want to see mutant ninjas?

The producer also spoke about X-Men: First Class, »

New Updates on the Status of Wolverine 2, X-men First Class, Deadpool, and Magneto

16 October 2009 1:08 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In 2000, “X-Men” was the first superhero movie to step into the American mainstream after the Superman and Batman franchises had committed suicide through atrocious movies.  Whatever you may think of the three “X-Men” movies and “Wolverine”, there’s no denying that it’s box office juggernaut (and a more convincing and powerful one than Vinnie Jones).  With that in mind, producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who has been with the series from the very beginning, recently provided updates on the continuing mutation of “Wolverine 2″, “X-Men: First Class”, “Deadpool”, and Magneto”.  Hit the jump to learn about projects that aren’t a fourth “X-Men” movie.

Wolverine 2

“That’s the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil.” Says Donner.  We already know that this movie would be set in Japan and based on the comic-book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, but Donner says they’re going for authenticity… »

The Week in Film: "Wild Things," a date for "A Single Man," and trailers galore

16 October 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

My high school reunion wound up being not at all traumatic, so I'm not certainly not going to let the week's movies get me down.

This week marks the long-awaited premiere of Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, adapted (by Jonze and novelist Dave Eggers) from the beloved children's book by gay author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. I can imagine audiences being widely divided over this movie — after all, even the book has had its detractors over the years — and I can say that I definitely liked it without ever really loving it.

Max Records stars as Max, the wolf-suited boy who misbehaves and runs off to an island inhabited by monsters who make him their king. The movie offers delightful visuals, a sweetly plaintive score by Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Carter Burwell, and terrific performances by Records and Catherine Keener, along with the voices of James Gandolfini, »

'Dead@17' Movie Has No Writer, No Star: 'It's Really, Really Early,' Says Michael Dougherty

16 October 2009 6:46 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Earlier this year, there seemed to be some big news on the feature-film adaptation of Josh Howard’s “Dead@17,” as the comic’s creator revealed that “Superman Returns” and “X2: X-Men United” screenwriter Mike Dougherty would be writing the script.

But before the tale of Nara Kilday can be reborn, it seems, it has to be killed much like its heroine.

“That’s so early in development,” shrugged off Dougherty—whose stock is soaring these days now that he’s made his directorial debut with last week’s flying-off-the-shelves DVD release of “Trick ‘r Treat." “There’s just nothing to talk about right now.”

Now, there’s a bummer. Not only is the film—which fans have thought Dougherty was writing for the last eight months—not written, but rumored star Vanessa Hudgens is also nothing more than a rumor. In fact, Dougherty revealed to us that he isn’t »

Brett Ratner Defends X-Men: The Last Stand

15 October 2009 2:09 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Fans of the X-Men are familiar with the evolution of the trilogy: X-Men was good, X2: X-Men United was terrific, and X-Men: The Last Stand just plain sucked. Last Stand's director, Brett Ratner, has heard all the criticism and is sick of it.

You can't make these people happy. I'm kind of the anti-Christ to these comic book geeks. Every single person that wrote s**t went to see that movie multiple times because a movie doesn't gross $200 something million unless people go to see it more than once. Every single person who said, "I'm never seeing that movie," they were the first ones there.

Calling the fan base of your movie "geeks" isn't the most courteous of expressions, but his frustration is somewhat understandable since Last Stand did make $234 million in the U.S. alone and, ultimately, $460 million worldwide. It also cost $210 million to make, so it's not »

There’s been a lot of this of late: movies skipping theatrical release and heading straight for every form of home video viewing known to humanity in the early 21st century. The straight-to-dvd stigma seems to be wearing off, and if the buzz on this film is a true indication of its awesomeness, this could be the movie that erase that stigma forever. Also: Anna Paquin as Little Red Riding Hood? Tee-hee! Bryan Singer Going Back to ‘X-Men’?

13 October 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

At the Pusan International Film Festival held in South Korea, director Bryan Singer had most fanboys’ ears perking up when he mentioned: “I’m still looking to possibly returning to the X-Men franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it.” Singer was the director for both X-Men and X2: X-Men United, but decided to pass on what would eventually be X-Men: The Last Stand so that he could helm Superman Returns instead.

Rush Hour director Brett Ratner handled the third mutant installment while Rendition director Gavin Hood oversaw the spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine in Singer’s absence; the latter of which will birth another spin-off revolving around Ryan Reynolds’ character, Deadpool. Box office success was never a problem with these comic-themed movies, but both X3 and the Superman reboot didn’t stand up critically to some other feature films from the same genre.

Bryan Singer To Return To X-Men

Bryan Singer (”The Usual Suspects,” “X-Men,” “X2,” “Valkyrie“) has admitted that he would like to make more X-Men films.

The Hollywood Reporter talked with Singer, who worked on the first two movies in the series, “X-Men” (2000), “X2″ (2003), about return to the big screen X-Men franchise that he created.

“I’m still looking to possibly return to the X-Men franchise,” he said. “I’ve been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast.”

Singer added that he likes working on science fiction films because they teach the audience about mankind.

“[I like to] trick audiences into thinking they’re seeing fireworks, but they’re learning about themselves and listening to what I have to say,” he explained. “The excitement about working in science fiction and fantasy is… the stories, if they are good, are about the human condition.”
