Dante’s Inferno: The Animated Epic – Trailer

25 November 2009 10:34 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

You might remember that earlier in the year two projects were announced, both of which would bring Dante Alighieri’s epic poem – The Divine Comedy – to the big screen. Yes not one, but two projects bringing Dante’s Inferno and the nine circles of hell to life, the difference? One is live action, to be penned by “X2: X-Men United” writer Dan Harris and the other, an animated feature.

While we’re quite a way off from seeing any progress at all on the live action movie, a trailer has been released for the animated film, which is based on the Electronic Arts game.

Produced by Joe Goyette and directed by Victor Cook, Dante’s Inferno: The Animated Epic will feature nine vignettes, created by six leading animation studios, including the talents behind “Blood the Last Vampire” (animated) and “Ghost in the Shell.” Check out the fantastic results below:

Wolverine star Hugh Jackman to take on boxing robots in Real Steel

25 November 2009 7:09 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Fans of the X-Men films have long been wanting to see the Sentinels - giant mutant-hunting robots - on the big screen.

The metal menaces were due to feature in X2 but had to be cut from the script because they would be too expensive. The head of a Sentinel was seen briefly in X-Men: The Last Stand, and the robots were rumoured to be part of an early script for X-Men Origins: Wolverine but never made it to the final draft. (There were Sentinels in the tie-in video game, though).

Whether Sentinels will ever be part of the X-Men movies is anyone's guess, but in the meantime Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman will be taking on robots in his next film.

Jackman is to star in sci-fi movie Real Steel, based on a short story by Richard Matheson in which a fighter has to reinvent himself when human boxers are replaced by machines. »

Scottish actor Alan Cumming has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace in London.

The X2 star was honoured on Tuesday for his services to film, theatre and the arts, as well as his work as a gay rights campaigner.

Dressed in a traditional Scottish kilt, Cumming said, "I have a voice because of my work. I'm loud and I speak my mind. I feel it's a lucky position to be in - that people want you to speak out for something you want to say anyway. My work has enabled me to do something with my opinions for good."

The actor, who has also appeared in TV shows including Sex & the City, Frasier and Third Rock From The Sun, was joined by his husband Grant Shaffer, his mum and brother at the ceremony. »

Hannibal Lecter to Play a Dwarf in The Hobbit?

17 November 2009 1:20 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

AICN's Australian correspondent reports that Brian Cox, the Scottish actor who originated the role of Hannibal Lecter in 1986's Manhunter and tried to take down Wolverine in X2: X-Men United as William Stryker, may play one of the dwarves in The Hobbit, Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming prequel to The Lord of the Rings triology.

With John Rhys-Davies saying he would not return as the father of his Lord of the Rings character Gimli, clearly the search for actors to play the 13 dwarf characters is ongoing. However, Cox's casting is only a rumor at this point.

Empire speculates that Cox could play Thorin, the meatiest dwarf role in the original novel, but really, Cox could be playing any of the dwarves or none at all. In any case, we have to admit that we hope they're right.

The Hobbit will start shooting in March.

Brian Cox Considering a Trek to The Lonely Mountain?

16 November 2009 1:03 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It’s no secret around my neck of the woods that I’m a rabidly-obsessive Middle Earth fanatic. I re-read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every year (with some Silmarillion usually thrown in for good measure every other year), I saw each of the films five times in the theatre (the first always at midnight, opening day), and I absolutely refuse to watch the standard editions now, much to my wife’s dismay, as I believe the extended editions to be the definitive and only cuts that exist. So, to say that I mildly excited when news about The Hobbit began to drift across the fields of the Shire would be an understatement akin to calling the Sammath Naur nothing more than a pothole. What do we know? We know that Peter Jackson is onboard to produce and that Guillermo Del Toro will be taking over the director’s chair. Unfortunately »

Brian Cox Up For Dwarf Role In 'The Hobbit'?

16 November 2009 8:32 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

From Movies Blog: File this one under "here's hoping." Brian Cox is a gifted performer. One of those actors whose mere presence is enough to elevate a movie. "Troy" wasn't that great, but Cox helped make it bearable as Agamemnon. And his roles in "X2: X-Men United" and "Super Troopers" -- already fine films -- are unforgettable, career highlights without question. Also don't forget: Cox was the first person to fill the role of man-eater Hannibal Lecter (spelled Lecktor back then), in Michael Mann's "Manhunter."

Now the word is that Cox is up for one of the dwarves in director Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of "The Hobbit." The news comes from AICN, with Cox being described as a "major contender." The report is clear to state that there's no way of knowing right now if the role is cast or if the producers are just looking at the veteran actor, »

Brian Cox Rumored for Dwarf Role in 'The Hobbit'

15 November 2009 12:08 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

With production on The Hobbit now just a few months away (although one wonders if the recent news about MGM's possible sale will alter that plan a bit), we should start hearing a lot more casting news. Here's one that makes sense: Brian Cox as one of the dwarves.

Cox has worked too much in the past few years, so his impact has been a little watered down (thanks, stupid Loch Ness Monster movie). But when he's on, as in the Bourne movies, X2, and Adaptation, Cox is a fantastic and valuable character actor. »

Bryan Singer gains massive support for return to X-Men

15 November 2009 10:19 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

There's been overwhelming support for Bryan Singer in my recent poll asking whether he should return to the X-Men film series.

Thousands of people voted and 79 per cent picked 'yes', while 16 per cent said 'no' and 5 per cent were not sure.

Producers are keen to bring the director back in order to restore the 20th Century Fox franchise to the widely-received consistency and quality of his second film, X2: X-Men United.

X2 was written by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, and Dougherty recently revealed the ideas he had for X3 before they had all left to make Superman Returns instead.

Fox hired first Matthew Vaughn, and then Brett Ratner, to take the reins on the third movie.

There are welcome moves to try get Singer and his team on board for one or more future X-Men movies.

Several films are in the pipeline: a Wolverine sequel being penned by Singer »

Mike Dougherty Explains How He Would've Written X-Men 3

14 November 2009 4:49 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

You're probably wondering why I'm writing about X-Men 3 some three years or so after it first came out. Well, despite making some $234 million a the box office, most comic book fans hated the movie, claiming it was a huge let down and that they butchered the Dark Phoenix storyline. Well, you may have also heard the name Mike Dougherty recently, and that's because he directed the cult horror hit Trick 'r Treat (buy the DVD). But before he directed that, he worked closely with Bryan Singer and is credited as one of the writers on X2. He even helped brainstorm an entire story for X-Men 3 with Singer that never got used. But what if? This was never supposed to be heard by anyone besides Bryan Singer, but Dougherty recently appeared on the /Filmcast After Dark and started talking about it after he was asked what he thought of ... »

McMahon, Cox Are Ready for 'Red'

13 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

It seems every time I turn around, someone new gets added to the upcoming comic book adaptation Red. Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary-Louise Parker were previously cast in the Bruce Willis vehicle, to be directed by Robert Schwentke.

They will further be joined by Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfuss and Brian Cox, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog. McMahon will play the Vice-President who is responsible for ordering the killing of a former CIA agent (Willis’ character), while veteran actor Borgnine’s part has been described as "the keeper of the CIA’s darkest secrets." As for Dreyfuss and Cox, they will play a wealthy man who made a fortune on government contracts, and a Cold War spy who has a rivalry with the main protagonist, respectively.

McMahon played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies, which were also based on comic books. »

Red adds Julian McMahon, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine

13 November 2009 6:59 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Summit's adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic book miniseries Red is adding four new cast members.

Julian McMahon (who played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four films), Brian Cox (the villainous Stryker in X2: X-Men United), Richard Dreyfuss and film and TV veteran Ernest Borgnine (pictured) are in negotiations to join the film, according to Heat Vision.

Red was a three-book series in 2003 and 2004, which was written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner.

It tells the story of a former black-ops CIA agent (played by Bruce Willis) living a quiet life in retirement until hi-tech assassins are ordered to kill him for knowing too much.

McMahon would play a Vice President with a dark side who is at the center of a shadow conspiracy; Cox is a former Cold War spy and nemesis of Willis; Dreyfuss will be a wealthy man who builds a fortune out of lucrative »

X-Men: The Last Stand: What Could Have Been

10 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Brett Ratner is tired of defending his directorial work in X-Men: The Last Stand, but fans continue to wonder what might have been if Bryan Singer had finished his X-Men trilogy, instead of defecting to Superman Returns. Michael Dougherty, the screenwriter for X2: X-Men United who joined Singer's defection, explained his ideas for X3 to Slashfilm in a recent podcast (transcribed by TheGeekFiles).

You found out was that Phoenix [(Famke Janssen)] was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god, which they did in X3. She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was sick of the fighting and she was going to take things into her own hands and she did not give a s**t what the X-Men or the Brotherhood had to say about it.

'X2' Screenwriter Describes The 'X-Men 3' He And Bryan Singer Would Have Made

10 November 2009 7:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Several fans have wondered what "X-Men: The Last Stand" would've looked like with Bryan Singer at the helm as opposed to eventual director Brett Ratner, particularly after the latter filmmaker's recent comments towards his detractors. Well, wonder no more.

In an interview with Slash Film (as transcribed by The Geek Files), "X2: X-Men United" screenwriter Michael Dougherty described his and Singer's unused plans for "X-Men 3."

According to the writer, the film would have focused on Jean Grey's transformation into the Phoenix, albeit much differently than the version ultimately seen in "The Last Stand."

"You found out was that Phoenix was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god," described the screenwriter. "She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was sick of the fighting and she was going »
