Kevin Feige Talks 10 Years of Marvel Movies

As the first decade of the new millennium comes to an end, we look back at the era that saw our favorite comic book heroes from the house of Stan Lee making the leap from the page to the silver screen.
To bring us a first-hand perspective of the Marvel movie experience, President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige recounted the hard work and big payoffs that catapulted Marvel (and comic book movies on the whole) to the cinematic power horse it is today.
I’ve taken the liberty of cutting down Feige’s quotes to Marvel News down into some smaller snippets that should help spark fond feelings of comic book movie nostalgia:
Trying to Break the “Marvel Curse”
I started at Marvel proper in August 2000; I had been working as an associate producer on “X-Men” in 1998. We worked on that for almost three years. Back in those days there was the “Marvel Curse.

For many people, a new year means a time for new habits, resolutions, and fresh starts. For myself though, it’s always been about one thing and one thing only: 365 days of brand-new films!
And of course, Hollywood being Hollywood, there’s the usual litany of sequels, super-hero spectacle, remakes, and state-of-the-art Hollywood summer craziness filled with all manner of digital monsters and explosions. But there’s also new films from Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and - most intriguing of all - a ballet thriller from Darren Aronofsky. Come on, admit it - you know you got excited when you heard the words “ballet thriller!” All that, and we also see the return of Michael Douglas in his seminal role as Gordon Gecko.
Read on after the jump for my list of the ten films that - for reasons both good and bad - I’m most looking forward to seeing in the new year.

Today marks the birthday of a comics icon, and the Twitter Report joins Christos Gage, Brian Michael Bendis, Tony Lee and most of this column's follow list in wishing the Marvel Universe's lead architect a hearty excelsior as he celebrates. Birthday boy Stan Lee, meanwhile, closed his daily Twitter meditations Sunday with the realization that his leadership role on a private island country he's planning may produce conflicts of interest with his mayorship in "Marvel Super Hero Squad."
In other tweets, Kevin Smith was blown away by the new "Iron Man 2" trailer and relayed his War Machine thoughts to Jon Favreau. Check those posts out after the jump along with Jock's Batwoman and Judge Dredd-related tasks, Simon Pegg on video games and fatherhood and another "Avatar" reaction.
It's all in the Twitter Report for December 28, 2009.

Female Lead For ‘Green Lantern’ Down To Five Potentials

Latino Review has an exclusive look at who might be Carol Ferris, the lucky lady that doesn’t get the ring from Ryan Reynold’s “Hal Jordan” in the upcoming Green Lantern film from DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.
Ferris has been described as “the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. She works for her dad’s company Ferris Air, got an Mba, and has a lifetime crush on Hal Jordan.” The website seems to believe that the role comes down to the following five actresses: Eva Green, Keri Russell, Diane Kruger, Blake Lively or Jennifer Garner.
Each of these actresses has had a taste of the action genre (if not a comic book film or two, in Garner’s case) except for Blake Lively. Being from the TV show Gossip Girl and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants films, she might be a good choice as there’s no

"Sin City" actress Brittany Murphy's death at age of 32 yesterday stirred up reactions in the Twitter Report feed. Shock about her age pervaded many posts, but Kevin Smith probably stated his condolences the most eloquently.
Rob Liefeld came out of his "Avatar" screening marathon over the weekend with a new pick to play Cable on the big screen, and any X-Men movie producer sitting down with him in the near future can expect to hear the name Stephen Lang. Check out those tweets after the jump along with Jon Favreau's visit with "Iron Man 2" actor Mickey Rourke, Edgar Wright's time-travel plot and much more.

Secret Identity: Five Actors Who Could Play The Riddler

From comedian Dane Cook to the fans themselves, it seems that everybody is crossing their fingers that The Riddler will show up in the eventual sequel to "The Dark Knight."
While the villain's involvement in a third "Batman" film is far from confirmed — heck, the actual existence of "Batman 3" is speculative at this point — it's worth wondering who could play Edward Nigma should he wind up in Christopher Nolan's return to Gotham City.
Given Nolan's proclivity towards a darker, more realistic tone than his live-action "Batman" predecessors, it's important to steer clear of actors that would take a hammy, parody-riddled approach to The Riddler. This is a character that should have wit and humor, sure, but also pose a threat. With those qualities in mind, I think that these five actors would do an excellent job at confounding the citizens of Gotham in an eventual "Batman 3."

Lee revealed the news via his Twitter account:
“Kenneth Branagh (of course I call him ‘Ken!’) said my cameo’s set for the upcoming Thor movie. – To him, it’s a cameo, to me – it’s a Role!” Lee posted.
He added: “Can’t tweet anymore. Due to Thor, I must start rehearsing my thee’s and thou’s. So, if thou objecteth not, I wish thee well! ‘Nuff saideth’.”
Stan Lee has also made cameos in all the Spider-Man films, both Fantastic Four movies, Daredevil and X-Men.

Phil Hester checked out the first episode of "Jersey Shore" this week and now appears to be contemplating the life of a supervillain, according to his tweets. Rob Liefeld, meanwhile, was pondering the future of comics last night and laid down a prediction for how long they'll be around in their current form.
Elsewhere, artist Nikki Cook watched one of my all-time favorite episodes of "Highlander: The Series," which features the best use of her song "Cherry Bomb" in the history of television. There's an episode of the "The O.C." that ranks just beneath it. Check out those tweets after the jump, as well as Geoff Johns' promise for the next issue of "Blackest Night: Flash" and some new Todd McFarlane artwork.

Week in Geek: Kenneth Branagh's Thor is coming together

From Anthony Hopkins to Natalie Portman, Thor is picking up steam with a raft of castings, but how closely will the film stick to Stan Lee's 1962 comic?
Kenneth Branagh is a lucky man. Unlike the unfortunate director who will, eventually, be tasked with reviving the fortunes of Superman, Branagh is bringing to the big screen a superhero (Thor) with no movie precedent. The closest thing to the son of Odin who's popped up on film so far has been the hunky car mechanic who slightly resembled him in Chris Columbus's trashy 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting.
And Branagh seems to be making all the right moves. He's avoided reported studio pressure to cast a famous face – Josh Hartnett was said to be in the running – and instead plumped for the little-known Chris Hemsworth, who was Captain Kirk's dad in Star Trek for about five minutes. As everyone who saw Daredevil knows,

This week, we're all about giving thanks for the people, projects and peripheral stuff that makes our jobs so much fun. After kicking things off with some words from comics legend Stan Lee about what he's thankful for this year, we heard from "Star Trek" duo J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine, "Inglourious Basterds" writer/director Quentin Tarantino (who told us about the comics that inspired his film), "Iron Man 2" actor Sam Rockwell and finally, "Green Lantern" and "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds.
And now it's my turn, folks.
In a wild year full of comic book movies of the blockbuster and not-quite-blockbuster variety, the introduction of some very unique new series, crossovers that remind us how fun big events can be and a host of other comics-related happenings, there's a lot to be thankful for in the comics scene. So, here are some of the things I'm giving thanks for

Apparently Odin's chamber for 'Thor' wasn't the only Marvel movie peek Brian Michael Bendis got this week. He also says he saw "Iron Man 2." Given his history of cameos, (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Daredevil, etc.) it’s not exactly shocking that Lee will be getting one in Thor. Here’s what the George Washington of Marvel Comics said to MTV about meeting with the film’s director, four-time Academy Award nominee, Kenneth Branagh:
“I had lunch with Branagh, [who's] the nicest guy in the world as well as the most talented… months ago, when he was first starting on the movie, he said he would get a cameo for me.”
There ya have it. In case you’re insane and want to know exactly when Stan Lee will appear in the background of the film selling hot dogs or whatever, he had this to say to those dogged MTV folks when pressed for details:
“I think he has more important things to think of at the moment with the movie — like who he

The Warriors Three may be joining Anthony Hopkins as Odin in Kenneth Branagh's "Thor," but at least one writer would rather have seen Sean Connery play the Allfather.
Elsewhere, big names in comics turned out for "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" last night, including Kevin Smith, who compared his daughter's relationship with the franchise to his own experience with "Star Wars." Simon Pegg tweeted an impassioned appreciation for "V for Vendetta" today in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, proving that he has not forgotten the 5th November. Also not forgetting were Jill Thompson, Neil Kleid and a few other I couldn't fit in.

Nickelodeon Buys Rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

According to Deadline Hollywood, Viacom's Nickelodean purchased the global intellectual property rights and merchandising rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Tmnt) in a deal estimated at $60 million. Nickelodean plans to develop a new CG-animated TV series starring the Turtles and release a new feature film of their exploits in 2012.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book was originally self-published in 1984 by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a parody of popular comic books of the time, including Frank Miller's Ronin and Marvel Comics' Daredevil. The comic book spawned a tremendously popular cartoon series, multiple video games, countless toys, three live-action movies, and the 2007 Imagi Animation Studios' CG-animated movie, simply titled Tmnt.
Nickelodean plans to maintain a relationship with Playmates Toyes, Inc., the company that first manufactured and marketed Turtles toys and is responsible for much of the franchise's success throughout the years.

There was a rumor floated recently by CineFools that Vin Diesel had dropped out of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. If you heard that rumor and freaked out, you can now turn red ’cause Diesel’s publicist emailed MTV and said it was untrue. This is exactly what was said in that email:
“I made a few calls on this and I can tell you that it is completely not true.“
The action-packed xXx franchise began with Diesel in 2002, when he played the extreme sports athlete-turned government operative, Xander Cage. xXx: State of the Union (2005) ripped Cage away from us and replaced him with Ice Cube’s Darius Stone. The third installment in the franchise is to be directed by Ericson Core, who brought us Invincible and was the cinematographer on Daredevil.
It was suspected the Deisel had dropped out of The Return of Xander Cage because director Rob Cohen,
