Do you ever celebrate the birthdays of your favorite movie folk? You should. Here are your options for 11/27

Michael Vartan, Bruce Lee

1940 Bruce Lee Chinese American trailblazer, 70s icon, legend. Without him, whose to say how long it would have taken martial arts films to gain as much international popularity? Without him, no Uma Thurman in a yellow track suit.

1951 Kathryn Bigelow director, action fan. An Oscar nominee in about 2 months and a week.

1956 William Fichtner actor

1957 Callie Khouri, screenwriter. She'll always have Thelma & Louise

His next project is the Gyllenhaal action flick Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. [editor's note: You may recall that the second podcast ever here at Tfe was an interview with his then working partner Greg P Russell whose own Oscar tally totals 12 nominations without a win.]

Producer: 'Fringe, Lost like licorice'

23 November 2009 3:30 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

The executive producer of Fringe has likened the show to licorice. Speaking during a conference call, Jeff Pinkner, who has also worked on Alias and Lost, attributed the show's recent ratings difficulties to its timeslot. "I think that Fringe, Lost, Alias, absolutely there's a time slot issue, but at the end of the day, it's more important to us that people fall in love with the shows," he said. "I've said before that these shows to me are like licorice, not everybody likes licorice, (more) »

The executive producers of the popular series talks about the season

Fringe is one of the biggest hits of the Fox lineup and it is currently airing on Thursday nights at 9 Pm Et on Fox. Two of the biggest reasons for the show's success are executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman and the producers recently held a conference call to discuss the new season. Here's what they had to say.

In the season finale, the Peter storyline, obviously it's kind of a large bombshell, it's kind of been on the back burner though a little bit his season. When can we expect to have that revisited?

Joel Wyman: We're definitely, definitely going to revisit it this season, and we're going to get into all, some details, and we're going to follow that through.

Any sort of specific timeline or just this season?

Joel Wyman: I would just say it's slowly unraveling throughout the season. »

Major Updates on Star Trek 2

17 November 2009 1:19 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

To promote the release of Star Trek today on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download, the cast and crew have once again stepped into public to let us know where the U.S.S. Enterprise is heading next.  First, a bit of sad but not totally unexpected news: We probably won’t see Star Trek 2 until 2012.  It is a bit of a bummer considering that we’ve grown accustomed to a breakout hit having its sequel ready in two years time.  The bright side is that they won’t be rushed and can really put their time into making this film better than the first.

Hit the jump for more about the sequel’s villains, timeline, and the tone the filmmakers want to set.

J.J. Abrams Boldly Talks Star Trek DVD and Blu-ray

17 November 2009 12:21 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Without a doubt one of the most exciting and invigorating things to happen to the sci-fi genre in years happened this summer when fans got to finally see director J.J. Abrams' re-imagining of the Star Trek franchise, with his hit film simply titled Star Trek. By all accounts, the director hit a home-run by pleasing hard-core fans with all the character nuances and sci-fi gadgets they expect while giving new audiences an exciting and heart-felt plot that they could follow. The film, which cost an estimated $150 million to make as grossed to date nearly $384 million world wide and with it's release on DVD and Blu-Ray today, is on track to add more money to it's impressive total. We caught up with fan-favorite director J. J. Abrams, the man behind Mission: Impossible III and the popular TV show's Lost, Alias and Fringe, at a Paramount event in Santa Monica in »

'Star Trek' Gets Re-Energized on Blu-ray

16 November 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Franchise reboots have become a go-to moneymaker for Hollywood in the past few decades. Find a popular, but overexposed series of films that has all but breathed its last breath. Add a new cast of pretty, bankable faces, updated and explosive special effects and a script that toes the line between tribute and parody, stir, and hope audiences will show up for the results. But nine times out of ten, a franchise reboot pales in comparison to the original and succeeds at little but making the audience long for the movies they initially loved. Thankfully, J.J. Abrams' reboot of the 'Star Trek' saga avoids all of these pitfalls and emerges as a smart, fun and original version of the world of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Star Trek starts from the very beginning as George Kirk is named captain of the Enterprise for 12 minutes before a tragic »

Last January, Drew Barrymore made her interest in making a third Charlie's Angels movie public. Slight change of plans. Now, she'd like to update the old TV show for ABC. A rep for Sony Pictures Television confirms that the network is close to ordering a pilot of the reboot, which Barrymore would develop with Leonard Goldberg, who produced the original series with Aaron Spelling, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Josh Friedman, who's been tapped to write and exec produce. The challenges facing the team are many: Though we all seem to get excited about action shows centered on ass-kicking woman, »

‘The Dark Tower’ Wont’ be Scaled by Abrams

11 November 2009 1:08 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

J.J. Abrams, the wizard behind Lost, Fringe, Alias and Mission: Impossible III told MTV that he won’t be bringing Stephen King’s Dark Tower series to the big screen and Shock Til You Drop overheard it. The producer/director/writer made it clear it wasn’t for lack of love:

“You’ll be hard-pressed to find a huger fan of ‘The Dark Tower’ than me, but that’s probably the reason that I shouldn’t be the one to adapt it… After working six years on Lost, the last thing I want to do is spend the next seven years adapting one of my favorite books of all time. I’m such a massive Stephen King fan that I’m terrified of screwing it up. I’d do anything to see those movies written by someone else. My guess is they will get made because they’re so incredible. »

Melissa George Cast on Lie to Me

From Meredith's crazy friend on Grey's Anatomy to an semi-nuts acquaintance of Cal Lightman on Lie to Me.

Melissa George has nabbed a recurring role on the Fox drama. She'll play a character Entertainment Weekly describes as an "Anna Nicole Smith-type." That can't be a good sign for her.

The actress' will take on the role of Clara Martin, the sassy wife of an older, late billionaire.

After being found innocent in a high-profile murder case, she assumes control of her husband’s empire. Cal sees his fearless, manipulative, scheming side in her.

George will first appear in the season's 11th episode. The Australian beauty has also enjoyed extended stays on In Treatment and Alias. »

Bradley Cooper Enters the "Dark Fields"

8 November 2009 1:16 AM, PST | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

It was recently announced that Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, Alias, Midnight Meat Train) will be headlining Relativity Media and Rogue Picture's thriller titled "Dark Fields". Cooper has replaced "Transformers" star Shia Labeouf according to reports. The movie is based on a book of the same name by author Alan Glynn. Neil Burger will be directing the picture from a script written by Leslie Dixon (The Thomas Crown Affair). The premise is rather strange and I should be surprised that Bradley Cooper would headline a flick like this after moving to A-list status after the unexpected sucess of "The Hangover". Then again, he did star in "Midnight Meat Train" thus anything's possible. Read on to see what the movie is about.

J.J. Abrams Producing NBC Pilot Undercovers; May Direct

6 November 2009 12:43 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams is once again using his producing magic to get another TV series off the ground.  Yes, I know that “What About Brian” and “Six Degrees” were both cancelled, but he’s had some success with the last two projects he helped launch, “Lost” and “Fringe”.  Now he’s going to try to give NBC a dramatic hit they sorely need in their line-up with “Undercovers”.  Hit the jump for details.

THR reports that, schedule permitting, Abrams will make “Undercovers” the first TV pilot he has directed since 2004’s “Lost” opener.  According to THR, it was the success of that pilot which helped Abrams get the gigs for “Mission: Impossible III” and later “Star Trek”.  This means that no one took much notice of the episodes he directed of “Felicity” and “Alias”.  Good thing that “Lost” turned out to be one of the best television series of all-time. »

J.J. Abrams takes on the Micronauts

6 November 2009 3:42 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost, Alias) is reported to be in discussions to produce a feature film based on the Micronauts toy franchise, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Micronauts toy line was created by Takara, later acquired by Tomy, and debuted in 1974 in Japan, where the line is known as Microman. Two years later the Mego Corporation introduced Micronauts to the Us, and released five series of toys through 1980.  Palisades Toys acquired the right to reproduce the toys in 2002, and the entire line was recently acquired by Hasbro.  Additionally, Marvel Comics, Devil's Due and Image Comics published Micronauts comic books, with several paperback books based on the property published by Byron Preiss Visual Publications.

At one point, they were so tightly integrated with the Marvel Universe that they crossed over with the X-Men and spun out a character that has crossed over with most of the rest of the line, »

Bradley Cooper Replaces Shia Labeouf in Dark Fields

5 November 2009 11:19 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The Hangover star Bradley Cooper is now set to replace Shia Labeouf in Neil Burger's (The Illusionist) upcoming thriller, Dark Fields. The film is an adaptation of the Alan Glynn book of the same name, and will feature a script by eclectic screenwriter, Leslie Dixon (The Thomas Crowne Affair, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hairspray). The film is among many projects Cooper has signed on for post-Hangover (which is strange, because I still know the guy best as Sydney Bristow's best friend on Alias). Cooper will play a struggling writer who takes a top-secret pharmaceutical drug that makes him smarter. He finds success, but also comes to learn there are consequences, such as the phenomenon "trip-switching" which makes him perceive time moving similar to stop-motion. The official book description follows: Imagine a drug that makes your brain function with perfect efficiency, tapping into your most fundamental resources of intelligence and drive, releasing »
