First Snazzy Clip From Vincenzo Natali’s Splice

9 October 2009 7:46 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Produced by “Pan’s Labyrinth” mastermind Guillermo del Toro and directed by cult Canadian filmmaker Vincenzo Natali (”Cube,” “Cypher,” “Nothing,”), the upcoming sci-fi horror outing “Splice” is shaping up to be something special. The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star as a pair of scientists who fiddle with animal and human DNA to create a “beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera” called Dren. Chaos, of course, promptly ensues. Visually, the film looks absolutely fantastic, and promises to be one of Natali’s biggest features to-date. Which is kind of cool, as I’ve always felt Natali has been unfairly grossly overlooked by just about anyone. And if you haven’t had a chance to watch “Nothing” yet, add it to your Netflix queue as soon as humanly possible. In the meantime, enjoy this clip from “Splice.” If that isn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, Bloody Disgusting has a »

Contest Winners: Night Train on dvd

16 July 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Writer Brian King (Cypher, The Day the World Ended) made his directorial debut this year with Night Train, a moody cross between a Hitchcockian thriller and the Twilight Zone where three strangers meet on a train and get embroiled in a fight for a mysterious wooden box. It stars Danny Glover, Leelee Sobieski, and Steve Zahn. In celebration, we threw a contest for DVDs!

Winners: Congrats to Greg Mason, Frankie Baylosis III (what are you a royal?) and Stuart Conover. We'll be mailing your DVDs out asap, so keep an eye on the mail.

Watch the trailer for Night Train after the break.

Review of Brian King's Hitchcockian thriller Night Train

Screenwriter Brian King makes a valiant effort to bring a classic noir flavor to his moody directorial debut, but ultimately Night Train fails to deliver a second coming of Sam Spade and The Maltese Falcon and comes off feeling like a by-the-numbers retread of A Simple Plan mixed with a not-so-memorable episode of The Twilight Zone.

That's not to say there isn't also a lot to like here. King's screenplay may not be terribly original, but it is at least a cinephile's wet dream - full of references to past characters and film noir flicks. The ensemble cast of Danny Glover, Leelee Sobieski, and Steve Zahn is also uniformly strong considering their paper-thin characters and I liked how the sets evoke a timeless feeling where you're never quite sure what era you're in. »

Brian King's Night Train available early (now) at Blockbuster

2 June 2009 10:36 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Even though we haven't reported on it, Night Train is a film I've been eying for while. Mostly because it's the feature film debut from Brian King, whose previous screenwriting credits include Vincenzo Natali's cyberpunk opus, Cypher, but also because I like the film's Shallow Grave meets A Simple Plan vibe featuring a dead man, a mysterious box full of diamonds and three characters who fight to keep hold of them.

The film is scheduled to hit DVD on July 14, 2009 but we just received word from the production that it's available early from Blockbuster. While I don't necessarily like plugging one particular video vendor, particularly ones who try to monopolize the distribution of films, I do like the idea of stores making certain film's available early.

Synopsis:

How far would you go to have everything you desire? Christmas Eve… when a veteran conductor (Glover), a young pre-med student (Sobieski »

I just got Terminatored! Review of Terminator Salvation

I am John Connor, I am the resistance, I am humanity's savior. I woke up out of this myopic gun metal hued dream and then the movie started. F***! I want to go back, to hold on to that vision I had before I watched the film. The one of the sprawling epic which would transcend the franchise. But alas, it's done with now, and for all its good and its bad, it really doesn't matter what I write here. You're still going to go see it. It's Terminator, it's post apocalyptic, it will continue..

I saw someone say it was at least better then T3, and I think the implication was that T3 was the worst of the franchise. I disagree, it was my favorite and still is. The ballsy ending »

First stills from Vincenzo Natali's Splice emerge

26 February 2009 6:36 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Hands down, Vincenzo Natali's Splice is one of our most anticipated film releases of 2009. The director of Cube and Cypher has been working with none other than Guillermo del Toro on it for about two years, tailoring it to creepy perfection. Word from early Amf footage is that it's looking great and now we can see for ourselves as Bloody Disgusting have premiered six stills from the film, a few of which are even new!

Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named "Dren", the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.

Splice is set to be released in September 2009. Can't wait. »

Andrew Niccol's Next Project Will Blow My Mind

6 February 2009 6:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I have a few obscure heroes in show business. One of them, as I note here from time to time, is Vincenzo Natali, best known for Cube, but also for an awesome little techno-thriller called Cypher, an offbeat, surreal comedy called Nothing, and the forthcoming Splice (which I would commit atrocities to see right now). He shares my fascination with the unknown and otherworldly, and expresses it on the screen in unfailingly creative and intelligent ways. Another example along the same lines is Don McKellar, whose Last Night is one of the most perfect little movies I've ever seen (though his participation in last year's godawful Blindness shall not go unpunished).

A third hero of mine is Andrew Niccol. I didn't think much of Lord of War, but all of his other projects have been conceptually brilliant in ways that are very much on my wavelength: The Truman Show (which »
