Foolish Golden Globe Predictions

Inglourious BasterdsThe Last Station

PreciousUp in the Air

The Globes sometimes throw in really interesting critical darlings that don't have much of a shot at Oscar (like Mulholland Drive or Eastern Promises) and sometimes they latch on to brand new movies that nobody cares about the next day (The Great Debaters) so, really, who the hell knows?!? Which is why I'm just tossing up my hands and predicting The Last Station. But honestly it feels like there's about 12 pictures that might be nominated. You could even see The Road surprising (they have a documented thing for Viggo) The reason I'm ignoring Avatar is that it just barely started screening. I don't know when the Hfpa starting voting but the Bfca ballots, for example, were due on Saturday, roughly 36 hours after the first Avatar screenings... at least here in NYC. And based on when the …

Decade in Review: 2002 Top Ten

2 December 2009 7:58 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As with 2000 and 2001, I'm reprinting my original top ten lists and commentary. If I've got something new to say, it'll be in red below.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2002. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were produced or released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Undervalued: Morvern Callar, Roger Dodger, About a Boy, White Oleander, Panic Room and Kissing Jessica Stein Top 10 Runners Up: Chicago, Monsoon Wedding, Punch Drunk Love and Spirited Away I still am glad I championed most of these movies though I am sad that some of them aren't in the top ten... particularly Morvern, Monsoon and the Miyazaki. The MMMs. Though I'm not sure I'd know what to remove to make room for them.

Review: The Girlfriend Experience

29 November 2009 4:06 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Actress Sasha Grey states that her name was dually inspired by The Kinsey Scale of sexuality and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.  It is Dorian Gray I recall as I sit in a tiny screening room with the crisp, Vogue editorial, beauty of The Girlfriend Experience unfurling on the screen before me.  Utter lack of affect in the face of unspeakable actions.  Is prostitution unspeakable?  Perhaps, at least, it is the latter-day love that dare not speak its name.

When Steven Soderbergh selected Grey as his muse for this Sex, Lies and Videotape for an Apprentice generation, speculation was rife (and ribald) that The Girlfriend Experience would be as blue as the economic mood upon its release.  Pleasingly nothing could be further from the truth.

The Girlfriend Experience presents five days in the life of a unique independent contractor – Manhattan call girl Chelsea.  Chelsea’s $2000 an hour …

10 Most Underrated Young Actors

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

Reader Poll: Who Should Play Prince Harry -- Robert Pattinson or Rupert Grint?

6 October 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Rumors are swirling around the UK that both Robert Pattinson and Rupert Grint are being eyed to play Prince Harry in an upcoming biopic directed by Peter Kosminsky (White Oleander). Now you might think that at 25 years of age, Prince Harry really hasn't lived the kind of life worthy of a big-screen biopic. Kosminsky, however, feels differently. On why he's attracted to the project, Kosminsky told the Telegraph the following: "His parents break up in the most spectacularly public way, his mother dies in the most tragic and, again, public way and everything is picked over. He's a man born to no role, the heir and the spare."     Harry is the younger of Prince Charles' two sons, and the one who's usually causing headlines – whether it's because he dressed as a...

Prince Harry's Getting His Own Film?

5 October 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Rumors are circling that Prince Harry is getting his own feature film. You know, Princess Di's second son, the third in line to the throne, the one who sports a red mop and chose the military over university. One might think the tender age of 25 is too young for a biopic, but I guess there's lots to tell when you're part of the Royal Family and happen to be the younger son of Princess Di.

The Daily Mail reports that director Peter Kosminsky (White Oleander) is gearing up to helm The Spare, a look into Prince Harry's young life, as penned by Jeremy Brock. The plan is to lay out Harry's experiences "from being trapped in a tragic fairytale to becoming a royal warrior, more at home on the field of battle with his men than in a palace." The script is scheduled to be done by the end of the year, …

Grint And Pattinson Up For Royal Role

3 October 2009 7:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Rupert Grint and Robert Pattinson have both been tipped to play Prince Harry in a movie about the British monarch's life.

Director Peter Kosminsky is set to begin casting for biopic The Spare, which will depict the royal's experience losing his mother Princess Diana and serving for the Army in Afghanistan.

The filmmaker is said to be considering British actors Grint and Pattinson for the lead, as well as Pride and Prejudice star Rupert Friend, according to Britain's Daily Star newspaper.

Kosminsky explains, "I feel a sense of compassion for the guy (Prince Harry). His parents break up in the most spectacularly public way, his mother dies in the most tragic and, again, public way and everything is picked over.

"He's a man born to no role. His brother's the heir and Harry's the spare."

The White Oleander filmmaker is refusing to rule out recruiting an American star, adding: "My personal approach as a director is that I read the script and people start to pop into my head." …

Who Is Giving Prince Ernst August a Little T.L.C. During His Time of Marital Strife?

Britain's Prince Harry is getting big-screen treatment. Tentatively called The Spare (a reference to Harry's place in succession to the throne), the film will explore the young prince as a conflicted royal and committed soldier. Though the screenplay is still in the works, it would appear that director Peter Kosminsky (the man behind the 2002 film White Oleander) is already on board. …

Alison Lohman Talks Drag Me to Hell

28 May 2009 1:38 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Alison Lohman isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. In her first major film role, she took on Michelle Pfieffer in White Oleander. Since then, the versatile Lohman has acted alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood; Nicolas Cage, Ewan McGregor, Jessica Lange, Halle Berry, and Benicio Del Toro are just a few of them.

Now, in the upcoming Sam Raimi flick Drag Me to Hell, Lohman was faced not only with the daunting task of playing the lead character Christine, but also with having to perform in almost every single scene in the film.

Lohman said, “As an actress, I found that it was really difficult being in every scene just because I am used to having breaks in-between. But here, I just had no time to get away at all and sometimes there wasn’t even time for me to run to the bathroom.”

In Drag Me To Hell, Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, a young woman whose idyllic world becomes a living hell when she’s placed under a merciless curse. Fortunately for Lohman, this initiation to the macabre comes under the guidance of horror maestro and acclaimed director, Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead; Spider-Man), whose new film, anchored by Lohman’s performance, is already generating considerable buzz.
