DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Assassination Of A High School President DVD Review

12 October 2009 2:08 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Fitting itself nicely into a sub-genre dominated in recent times by 2002's cult indie winners Igby Goes Down and The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Assassination of a High School President is a clever, dark look at the lives of teenagers who are rather more intelligent than they're given credit for. Fitting in nicely with those other representatives, Assassination has some younger people you've seen around, a big name actor as guest star, and gives us to understand that we shouldn't underestimate these young, but largely because they really are up to no good. Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson), in the spirit of something like an homage to film-noir, is a reporter for the school newspaper who has an itch to investigate something, whether there's something to investigate or not. »

Lymelife DVD Review

25 September 2009 8:41 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As the summer movie season draws to a close, more serious minded films will begin flooding the multiplexes, mostly in search of Oscar love. For those who’d prefer to experience some Oscar-baiting, fall movie gravitas at home, the coming of age drama Lymelife arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this week. This quirky tale of a 15-year old Long Island teen experiencing first love, parental discord, and disease-carrying tick paranoia, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last January before receiving a brief theatrical run back in April. Clearly modeled after the award winning suburban angst dramas American Beauty and The Ice Storm, and featuring a solid ensemble cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton, Cynthia Nixon, Emma Roberts and Rory and Kieran Culkin, the film didn’t receive much Oscar prognostication from critics, and went largely ignored by moviegoers who preferred April’s Beyonce Knowles/Ali Larter catfight to Lymelife »

Image Comics announces 'Forgetless'

17 September 2009 10:46 AM, PDT | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Image Comics has announced that its upcoming miniseries Forgetless will debut in December. Written by Nick Spencer, with artwork from W. Scott Forbes, Marley Zarcone and Jorge Coehlo, the comic book follows two struggling models-turned-assassins as they find themselves embroiled in trouble at a dangerous New York nightclub. "Forgetless is akin to Rashomon in a nightclub, just with a lot more bullets," Spencer said. "In a way, Forgetless may be the first action-thriller perfect for fans of the films Go! and Igby Goes Down, especially with how Scott, Marley (more) »

Vanity Fair's Hollywood ~ Episode 11 (2005)

26 May 2009 2:21 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Missed previous episodes? See: 1995 , 1996, 1997, 1998 , 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Vanity Fair briefly killed my enthusiasm for the "Hollywood project" when they nixed the traditional cover for 2009. But time heals most wounds and I have reanimated the project's corpse. 2004's cover had 13 already peaking actresses on it. How'd they follow it in 2005? With another batch of goddesses, 60% of whom had already graced their "Hollywood" cover. In the case of the C/Kates, it was now thrice. Was Vanity Fair running out of ideas? Given the idiosyncratic pool the covers regularly pulled from you'd think there were only 40 actresses in Hollywood... but then, it's probably all in who you know who represents you when it comes to face time here. It's definitely not only about the fame. Consider this: this cover series lasted from 1995 - 2008 and Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton never appeared on them (just four chronologically appropriate examples off the »

Movie Review: “17 Again”

18 April 2009 2:31 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: April 18, 2009

The players: Director: Burr Steers, Writer: Jason Filardi, Cast: Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Matthew Perry, Michelle Trachtenberg, Melora Hardin

Facts of interest: Burr Steers also directed "Igby Goes Down."

The plot: Mike is 37 and pretty much hates his life, until he's transformed back into his 17-year-old self.

Our quick thoughts: I never thought I’d write this, but Zac Efron’s latest teen comedy “17 Again” is not as bad as I expected. The film doesn’t offer viewers anything new in terms of story or its morals, but the plot moves along smoothly and even carries a bunch of funny moments that occasionally made me laugh. »

Zac Efron in talks to head to 'St. Cloud'

25 March 2009 11:45 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Zac Efron is in talks to star in Burr Steers' upcoming big-screen adaptation of Ben Sherwood's novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud."

Variety says the story follows a caretaker at a cemetary who meets weekly "with a younger brother whose accidental death he feels was his fault."

Craig Pearce wrote the original screenplay, which Steers is revising. If Efron joined "Cloud," it would mark his second collaboration with the director after "17 Again," which opens April 17, 2009.

Efron was attached to star in the upcoming remake of "Footloose," but he recently dropped out. The actor was last seen in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year."

Other Efron credits include "Me and Orson Welles," and "Hairspray." Steers also directed "Igby Goes Down" in 2002. »

It's 'Death and Life' for Efron

24 March 2009 11:04 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Should Kenny Ortega be offended? Ortega put Zac Efron on the map by casting him in the first "High School Musical" TV movie and finally got to direct him on the big screen in last fall's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year."  In between, Efron went from Adam Shankman's "Hairspray" to starring in "17 Again" which was also produced by the former choreographer, but directed by "Igby Goes Down's" Burr Steers.  Now, Variety reports Efron is negotiating to appear in Steers' next project, an adaptation of the novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud."  This comes on the... »

Kieran Culkin

24 March 2009 4:38 AM, PDT | Interview Magazine | See recent Interview Magazine news »

The thing that’s striking about Kieran Culkin in person is his indistinctiveness: He’s smaller, more diffuse, and more everyguy than the sharp and damaged characters on which he’s made his name. In blue jeans and jacket he’s unrecognizable on an East Village street; in conversation he’s as funny and loquacious as a corner bartender. Turns out that’s by design, and probably therapeutic: As ascion of one of Hollywood’s largest and most controversial stage families, he started film acting at the age of 7, and ever since has endured tabloid noise about his father’s mismanagement of his older brother Macaulay’s runaway stardom from the Home Alone films—a pop-culture juggernaut that threatened to typecast the entire family by default.

But Kieran definitively overcame his surname’s baggage with 2002’s Igby Goes Down, where he held his own against Susan Sarandon as a morose »
