Check it out, then let us know what Kevin Smith movies you most want to see by leaving a comment.
Mallrats 2
Smith’s 1995 film Mallrats wasn’t a box office success, but that hasn’t stopped talk of a sequel coming up here and there over the years – whether it would be a “Die Hard in a Mall” scenario, a limited series, or something completely different. The problem is that Mallrats is a Universal property, so Smith can’t do anything with it unless the studio is on board.

The first of author Gregory McDonald's "Fletch" novels was published in 1974. The title character of the McDonald's nine books was Irwin Maurice Fletcher, an ex-Marine investigative journalist with a penchant for disguises. Fletch is a bit of a slovenly cad, and he is constantly outrunning attorneys who seek alimony payments from various ex-wives. The first novel involves Fletch investigating drug traffic on the Los Angeles beaches as well as the mysterious, well-paid request from a dying millionaire that Fletch euthanize him.
"Fletch" was very loosely adapted to film in 1985 with Chevy Chase in the title role and with Michael Ritchie directing. The film was less a rundown detective story than a light comedy, and a lot of "Fletch" focuses on Chase's disguises and the comedian's ability to improvise. The story -- the investigation of a millionaire asking to be euthanized -- was kept intact. The film was a...

“Stranger Things” has always worn its influences on its sleeves, and season three will be no different. David Harbour, who’s received two Emmy nods for his work on Netflix’s throwback drama, tells Variety in a new interview that the next go-round will be inspired by the 1985 comedy “Fletch.”
“The Duffers are so specific each year with the movies,” he says. “And ‘Fletch’ is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn’t expect from ‘Stranger Things’ and you wouldn’t expect from the Spielberg universe and you certainly wouldn’t expect from a darker season.’” Set in the ’80s, “Stranger Things” has made numerous references to the movies and TV shows that have inspired it, from “The Goonies” and “Alien” to “Stand by Me” and “Ghostbusters.”

Superman Lives, The Green Hornet and sadly now Clerks III: here’s a rundown of the Kevin Smith films we’ll probably never see...
Kevin Smith has always had to fight to get his films off the ground: he started his filmmaking career by maxing out multiple credit cards to self-finance Clerks, and more recently, legend has it, it was only Johnny Depp’s decision to come on board as a wacky supporting character that allowed Smith to secure financing for his walrus-centric horror flick Tusk.
Smith has, across his career, been offered several barmy jobs (he rejected a chance to pen Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian back in the 90s) and he’s also signed up for a lot of projects that never got past the script phase.
The latter camp of could’ve-beens is what we’re talking about today, following that news that Clerks III...

Some reboots are destined to fail, while others manage to make a name for themselves in no time flat. And then there are those reboots that seem destined to spend their lives in limbo, transferring from studio to studio, waiting to either happen or not. One of the most infamous examples of a franchise in serious limbo is Fletch, which has transferred from Miramax to Warner Bros, and most recently to Relativity. With their impending bankruptcy forcing their hand, the studio is shuffling their deck and looking for a partner to help them play the Fletch card once and for all. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, a new Fletch film could be part of a potential deal that would keep Relativity active through corporate restructuring and the recruitment of some new investing blood. The plan so far is to keep Masterminds and Kidnap on the studio's ...

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses) has officially signed on to star in Warner Bros' upcoming "Fletch" reboot, which is called "Fletch Won" and is planned to be the first installment in a franchise. The "Fletch" movies are based on the Gregory McDonald mystery novels featuring an investigative reporter named Im Fletcher. The first book was written in 1974, and it spawned eleven more. Chevy Chase portrayed the character in the 1985 classic feature, which was followed by a sequel. The project has been in the works for years with countless actors and directors attached at different points. "Fletch Won" is an origin story, described as a gritty action comedy with heart and more tonally in line with McDonald's novels than the Chase movies. The goal is to have a vibe similar to "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Midnight Run."...

After being put on ice by Warner Bros., a Fletch reboot that aims to turn the 1980s Chevy Chase movie into a franchise has been thawed out over at Relativity Studios.
Teaming with Boies/Schiller Film Group, the studio is committed to the project, an adaptation of the mystery books by Gregory McDonald, and currently in negotiations with Jason Sudeikis, who was previously courted for the starring role over at Warner Bros.
Relativity and Boies/Schiller are now meeting writers to hash out a story, which will introduce Fletch to new audiences and may be based on Fletch Won, the eighth book in McDonald’s series.
If the project pans out, the studios are looking at adapting other books by McDonald – he wrote 11 in total, all focusing on the reporter I.M. Fletcher, whose two ex-wives complicate a life already made hectic by Fletcher’s expose writing.

Someone is still trying to make Fletch happen. Right now, that someone is production company Relativity, which has struck up a deal for the rights to the smart-alec reporter from Gregory McDonald’s books. The company also has Jason Sudeikis in negotiations to take over the role most famously played on screen by Chevy Chase. If all this sounds familiar, you’re not wrong: just last year, Warner Bros. was the studio looking to bring Fletch back, and Sudeikis was their choice back then too. Now the clock is reset as Relativity starts meeting with writers to try to crack the script. As seems to be the standard for these new attempts at Fletch films, it will be an origin story for the character, possibly based on McDonald’s eighth book, Fletch Won, which explored his first career break. We’re not going to start holding our collective breath for...

The comedy project that was to have acted as a franchise starter and a reboot of the 1980s Chevy Chase movie has found a new home at Relativity Studios after being let go by Warner Bros. The proposed reboot of the "Fletch" comedy franchise has survived a studio transition with Warner Bros. Pictures dropping the project which Relativity Studios has now picked up.
Based on Gregory McDonald's eleven-book series of mystery novels featuring the character Irwin M. Fletcher, Chevy Chase starred as the wisecracking reporter in the two films previously produced in 1985 and 1989.
Negotiations are underway with Jason Sudeikis to star in the film. Sudeikis was eyed for the starring role in the Warners version.
No word on the plot for the new one, though it is rumored to be an origin story and could be inspired by the eighth novel in the series "Fletch Won". John Rickard will produce the film.

Jason Sudeikis is in serious talks to play Irwin M. Fletcher (a.k.a. John Cocktolstoy, a.k.a. Dr. Rosenrosen, a.k.a. Arnold Babar) in Fletch Won, based on Gregory McDonald’s novels about a smooth-talking journalist. Chevy Chase starred in a hit 1985 comedy (as well as a less beloved 1989 sequel), but reviving the character has been a long and torturous ordeal. Now, Warner Bros., which acquired the rights to the character in 2011, has approved a script from the man who’s been guiding the project for more than 14 years: David List, a former literary agent, the late McDonald’s former manager,...

Warner Bros. is planning to reboot the classic 1980s Fletch comedy franchise and they are looking to cast Jason Sudeikis in the iconic role famously played by Chevy Chase. The movie is called Fletch Won, and it's the first in a planned series of films the studio is hoping to make.
The Fletch movies are based on the Gregory McDonald mystery novels that center on an investigative reporter named I. M. Fletcher. I've never read any of the books, but the movies that Chase made were freakin' hilarious. I can only hope that the new films will be just as funny.
I think Sudeikis will be great in the role, but it will be hard to outdo what Chase did. According to THR, Fletch Won is an origin story described as "a gritty action comedy with heart and more tonally in line with McDonald's novels than the Chase movies."

Jason Sudeikis has been pencilled in to step into the scruffy basketball sneakers of Irwin M Fletcher in Warner Bros’ Fletch Won. Based on the 1970s mystery novels of Gregory McDonald, the original Fletch saw Chevy Chase as an investigative reporter with a penchant for elaborate disguises, getting in over his head when an La businessman arranges to have himself murdered…by him. A big hit in 1985, Michael Ritchie’s film spawned a sequel four years later, Fletch Lives, in which Chase confronts murder, TV Evangelism and the Ku Klux Klan.
Since then, several attempts have been made to kick-start the franchise, notably by Kevin Smith who was announced as writer and director of Fletch Won for Miramax back in 2000. Can Jason Sudeikis fill Chevy Chase's shoes? The former "Saturday Night Live" star is in talks to play the wise-cracking investigative reporter Fletch in Warner Bros.' long-planned action-comedy "Fletch Won." Chase -- who also made a name for himself on "SNL" -- famously played the role in 1985's hit "Fletch" and its 1989 sequel "Fletch Lives." Both films were directed by Michael Ritchie. "Fletch Won" will be an origin story, and is expected to be the first film in a big screen franchise based on Gregory McDonald's mystery novel series which is comprised of 12 books, according to The Hollywood Reporter. After a series of starts, stops, and restarts, it looks like Gregory McDonald’s character, I.M. Fletcher (“Fletch,” for short), will finally be heading back to the silver screen. McDonald introduced the investigative reporter to the world in 1974, and would go on to publish 12 books about the character. The character is best known to mainstream audiences through the two Chevy Chase films about him that came out in 1985 and 1989. The first Fletch is considered a classic, while Fletch Lives…not so much.

After residing in development hell for more than a decade, a reboot of the Chevy Chase comedy Fletch, titled Fletch Won, is finally moving forward with news that We’re the Millers star Jason Sudeikis is in talks for the lead role.
The project, which has been housed over at Warner Bros. since 2011, is described as a “gritty action comedy with heart.” Following an investigative reporter named I.M. Fletcher, Fletch Won will act as an origin story for the character. Unlike the two Fletch films toplined by Chevy Chase, Fletch Won will hew quite closely to its source material, a series of mystery novels by Gregory McDonald.
Warner Bros. has had a tough time developing Fletch Won, going through quite a few iterations by various screenwriters (including Kevin Smith, who was also interested in directing at one point) before deciding on a script by David List, also the rep for McDonald’s estate.

For the longest time it was thought Kevin Smith (Clerks) was going to direct a what was then considered a prequel to Chevy Chase's 1985 comedy Fletch. Then it fell to "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence and star Zach Braff. Neither scenario came to fruition. Now THR reports Jason Sudeikis will take over for Chase in Fletch Won, which is being considered as the first film in a planned comedy franchise at Warner Bros. With a screenplay from first time writer David List apparently passing muster and described as a gritty action comedy with heart and more tonally in line with Gregory McDonald's mystery novels featuring investigative reporter I. Next step is find a director and I'd be shocked if Todd Phillips' name wasn't rumored at least once before this project began principal photography.

Much like a nasty cold, the '80s just won't go away. The latest franchise getting a 21st Century reboot is "Fletch," based on the novels by Gregory McDonald. Jason Sudeikis is in talks to take on the role of journalist I. M. Fletcher, a character made famous by fellow "SNL" alum Chevy Chase in "Fletch" and "Fletch Lives."

Similarly, Sudeikis has been enjoying a string of box office hits like "Horrible Bosses" and "We're the Millers," which are both getting sequels. Box Office Spartans slayed the competition at the box office this weekend, with 300: Rise of an Empire taking in an estimated $45.1 million. Though the sequel, with Noam Murro at the helm in place of Zack Snyder, failed to match 300's opening numbers domestically, it outpaced the original overseas, raking in $87.8 million from 58 markets. Mr. Peabody & Sherman was yet another disappointment for DreamWorks Animation, opening in second with $32.5 million. The movie suffered from family-friendly competition like The Lego Movie, which placed #4 with an additional $10.8 million, and Frozen, which held at #8 with an additional $3 million. Last week's top movie, the Liam Neeson actioner Non-Stop, dropped to #3 with $15.8 million.

Rebooting the character made famous by Chevy Chase in the 80's, reboot Fletch Won has been doing the rounds in Hollywood for some time now. Based on the eighth novel in a series by Gregory McDonald, itself a prequel, the movie will take the character back to his roots, showing his early career as an investigative journalist, and be more in keeping with the grittier tone of the novels which was changed considerably for the Chase starring Fletch and Fletch Lives. The project first saw the light of day in 2000, with Kevin Smith attached to write and direct. He remained attached to the project, amid clashes with the studio about casting Jason lee (who wasn't viewed as a box office draw) in the lead role, until 2005, and was replaced by Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, who had an eye on Zach Braff to play a young I.M. Jason Sudeikis ("We're The Millers," "Horrible Bosses") has scored the iconic role of Irwin M. 'Fletch' Fletcher in the upcoming comedy franchise reboot "Fletch Won" at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Chevy Chase played the character in two 1980s comedy features about a wiseass investigative journalist, films based on the Gregory McDonald mystery novels.
Warners picked up the rights in 2011 and had a hard time trying to get the property to work. David List penned a draft that the studio was satisfied with, a draft that attracted Sudeikis who is now in talks.
The new film is described as origin story and a "gritty action comedy with heart", it's also said to have a tone much more in line with McDonald's novels and action/comedies of that era like "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Midnight Run".
A director is now being sought for the film.

It’s been so long since there were real signs of life from the attempt to reboot the Fletch comedy films, we’d begun to wonder if it had truly slipped away and was destined to live only in limbo. But here comes a set of beeps on the ol’ development monitor, with word that Jason Sudeikis is in talks to take the role made famous by Chevy Chase.Hollywood has been trying to find a new Fletch for years, going through the likes of Kevin Smith, who long tried to make a new take on the investigative reporter with Ben Affleck, Zach Braff or Jason Lee in the role. Others have come and gone since, and Warner Bros. picked up the rights to the Gregory McDonald mystery novels in 2011, setting various writers the task of cracking a script for Fletch Won, which is aimed at re-introducing the character for a new audience.

Jason Sudeikis has nabbed the iconic role of Fletch in Warner Bros.' Fletch Won, the first of a planned comedy franchise centered on the journalist character first played by Chevy Chase. The Fletch movies are based on the Gregory McDonald mystery novels featuring an investigative reporter named I. M. Fletcher. The first book was written in 1974, and it spawned 11 more. Chase made an indelible impact when he portrayed the character in the 1985 classic feature, which was followed by a sequel. Before Ben Affleck became a world-renowned director and well-respected almost-politician, he played bullies in films like "Dazed and Confused" and "Mallrats." That latter effort was Affleck's first movie with director Kevin Smith, and the pair would go on to collaborate five other times throughout the next 11 years. According to Smith, however, it was almost six.
Smith took to Twitter on Sunday night to explain what happened to his long-discussed "Fletch" adaptation, "Fletch Won," which he said had Affleck attached at one point.
As fans might recall, Smith wanted "Mallrats" star Jason Lee to play Irwin Fletcher in the adaptation of Gregory Mcdonald's popular novel series. (Chevy Chase played the role in the 1985 film version.) That didn't go over very well with Miramax head Harvey Weinstein, who would have produced "Fletch Won" and didn't think Lee was a big enough star.

Whenever a movie studio announces plans for another remake, the reaction among fans and pundits is always the same: Hollywood doesn't have any new ideas.
But we like to look on the bright side of things, which is why we're so happy when we hear of a cool remake or reboot. Hey, who needs new ideas when there are already so many great old ideas waiting to be rediscovered?
With that in mind, we've compiled a list of 50 — that's right, 50! — upcoming Hollywood remakes that tickle our fancy. Because if these films were good the first time, you never know, you might just enjoy them even more the second time around.

In February, Warner Bros. purchased the movie rights to all 11 volumes of the Fletch novel series written by the late author Gregory MacDonald, and they're finally getting to work on their first installment.
Of course, audiences are more familiar with the character of investigative reporter Irwin M. Fletcher because of the 1985 adaptation of Fletch, based on the first of MacDonald's novels and starring Chevy Chase as the incorrigible title character. Warners doesn't plan to remake the original movie, but rather "re-imagine" the movie, and the first order of business was to hire Seinfeld writer and Curb Your Enthusiasm producer and director David Mandel. The move seems to say that the studio is looking to highlight the comedic aspects of the books, though reportedly Warners is looking to "make a smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies."

The backstory of a new Fletch movie goes back at least ten years, to when Universal and Kevin Smith started talking about adapting the novel Fletch Won as a sequel/prequel to Fletch ('85) and Fletch Lives ('89). The project moved to Miramax, but Kevin Smith eventually moved on. Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence was going to make the movie, and at one point it looked like Zach Braff might step in as a young Fletch. That failed, too, and Steve Pink became the new director. But now Warner Bros. has rights [1] to the Gregory McDonald Fletch novels and the studio is just going to remake (or reimagine, as it may be) the first film that originally starred Chevy Chase. The first step in that process is a script, and David Mandel has just been hired to write it. THR [2] reports, and notes that David Mandel is one o the writers...

Many people have tried over the past 15 years to get the Fletch franchise twitching back to life – the last attempt we reported on back in the early days of Owf and had Joshua Jackson attached to lead in a film directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine). To date, all have failed.
THR say Warner Bros. are determined to do something with the property, just like their recently announced reboot of another long dormant series Lethal Weapon.
It’s being reported that the studio have bought the rights to Gregory McDonald’s (who died three years ago) series of 11 novels from which Chevy Chase’s two 80′s comedy vehicles Fletch and Fletch Lives were derived. The Fletch movies follow the exploits of a divorced investigative journalist snooping around where he isn’t wanted whilst getting hell from the ex wives.

If you were a fan of Chevy Chase's 1985 comedy "Fletch," and couldn't help but have a soft spot in your heart for its 1989 sequel "Fletch Lives," then you are either going to love or hate this news.
Despite the rumor over the past decade that a "Fletch" prequel called "Fletch Won" is in the works, Deadline learned that Warner Bros. has instead acquired the rights to reboot the film and start a new franchise based on the Gregory McDonald series.
The first film follows a wisecracking investigative reporter named I. M. Fletcher who is trying to get to the bottom of a drug trade, but is distracted when a well-groomed man named Alan Stanwyk approaches him. Stanwyk tells him he has incurable cancer and offers Fletcher a lot of money to off him, not knowing he's an undercover reporter. Fletcher does some digging on Stanwyk and discovers his story...

Warner Bros. is about to attempt what no creative team has been able to do for more than a decade: revive the “Fletch” franchise.
Since 2000, a slew of actors and filmmakers have been trying to turn around a sequel/reboot of the classic comedy mystery franchise, based on an award-winning series of novels by Gregory McDonald. Chevy Chase embodied the bumbling detective first in the 1985 film “Fletch” and again in 1989′s “Fletch Lives.” The property has always been a priority, but a sequel has notoriously never come to fruition.
Starting in 2000, recent rabble-rouser Kevin Smith attempted to bring an adaptation of “Fletch Won” to life for Miramax, with familiar faces like Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Brad Pitt and Jimmy Fallon all up for filling Chase’s shoes. Then came “Scrubs”-creator Bill Lawrence, whose Zach Braff-starring version quickly pittered out.
Now it’s 2011 and a “Fletch” reboot is still non-existant – for now.

Gregory McDonald's powerfully popular 'Fletch' series spawned a pair of well-regarded Chevy Chase comedies back in the '80s, and it looks like the popular character is poised to make a return. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and production company Anonymous Content plan to go back to the books and deliver a comedic adventure movie (franchise?) that's a little bit bigger than a Chevy Chase vehicle:

Warner Bros. will reboot the "Fletch" franchise, the basis for the 1985 Universal feature that starred actor Chevy Chase as an La-based investigative journalist, as well as the 1985 sequel "Fletch Lives".
The first "Fletch" novel, by author Gregory Mcdonald, published in 1974, was the first in a series featuring the character 'Irwin Maurice Fletcher'.
In the book, Fletch is working as a reporter. Over the course of the series, he acquires a moderate fortune and becomes a globetrotter perpetually working on a biography of fictional artist 'Edgar Arthur Tharp, Jr.' He tends to stumble upon mysteries, often to be suspected of crimes by the police, and to win through depending heavily on his wits.
Because of the popularity of "Fletch", several sequels (and prequels) were written involving the character, including "Fletch Won", "Fletch, Too", "Fletch and the Widow Bradley", "Carioca Fletch", "Fletch's Fortune", "Confess, Fletch", "Fletch's Moxie", "Fletch and...

We've been hearing about the possibility of a Fletch reboot for quite some time now. Based on the books by Gregory McDonald that proved to be two of Chevy Chase's best movies, talk of a reboot first started back in 2005 when Kevin Smith wanted to make a movie called Fletch Won with Jason Lee, but then that morphed into Bill Lawrence's Fletch Won with Zach Braff back in 2006, and then Braff left the project in 2007. After that there was some mention of Joshua Jackson or John Krasinski in the role, but those stories never became anything real. So guess what's happening now? THR reports that Warner Bros. has picked up the movie rights to McDonald's mystery series with the hope of turning it into a new franchise. Though no director or writer has been attached yet, Steve Golin, Michael Sugar, and David List will produce and have said...

Chase played the womanising journalist in two movies in the 1980s, based on the books of author Gregory McDonald.
Studio bosses have been trying to take McDonald's novel Fletch Won to the big screen for more than a decade with a number of directors including Kevin Smith linked to the film, and several actors including John Cusack, Zach Braff, Jason Lee and Ryan Reynolds considered to fill the role made famous by Chase.

Chevy Chase is making a bit of a comeback, by starring in NBC's new series "Community," appearing on "Chuck" and being cast in the upcoming "Hot Tub Time Machine" comedy alongside John Cusack and Robb Corddry. But he is also considering a new script that would see him reprise his role as investigative reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher. A relaunch of the "Fletch" franchise has been in the works for years, with the current screenplay's approach passing the baton to Fletch's journalist nephew as the semi-retired uncle advises him on his stories. "Fletch Won" was announced back in 2006 with Zack Braff attached to star and "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence attached to direct. Then a scheduling conflict made Braff abandon the project, which caused it to be put on hold.
