I gave this 10 out of a possible 10 stars.
I had no idea that this Mr. Ripley was the same Ripley as the character in The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I've also seen.
In this film, the splendid actor, John Malkovich plays an older, more sure of himself, and perhaps crueler Tom Ripley.( Matt Damon did the honors in The Talented Mr. Ripley - also an excellent film).
I was a little confused at the beginnings of the film, and it took me about 15 or 20 minutes to get into this movie, and figure out who was who.
Once the film moves on to the main storyline, I was pulled in completely, and glad I did not give up on it earlier. I don't know when I have been so thrilled and involved with a film.
Tom Ripley is as ruthless as they come, and cool as ice. A good man to have on your side in a tight pinch, because believe you don't want him NOT on your side, since he does enjoy beating people to death on occasion.
How a character this vile could end up having me on the edge of my seat, worrying about him, and rooting for him, I can't begin to imagine. Its due to the talents of John Malkovich, who should have gotten an Oscar for this role. I don't know, but I'm guessing he didn't.
Malkovich is thrilling in the tight, tense scenes where the suspense runs higher than a river at flood stage. He also has a great wardrobe, and dresses in black quite a bit--a long black coat that I adored, and a black beret like hat--if you're into costuming like I am.
I have not read the novel on which this film is based, it may be that the book is more explicit, but in the film I definitely got the feeling of a very strong undercurrent of homoerotica between Tom and his ingenue, Jonathan. This undercurrent of homosexual love is what makes the plot work, and explains the motivations behind what Ripley does, and later, Jonathan.
