Las Vegas — Gamblers who prefer their laptops to blackjack tables could soon get a boost from Washington.
Republican New York Congressman Peter King proposed federal regulations Thursday that would rescue online gambling from the legal gray zone where it currently languishes.
The federal government cracked down on online poker in 2011. But the same year, the U.S. Justice Department issued a ruling making online gambling legal so long as it's permitted on the state level.
Congress flirted with an online gambling bill last year, but industry infighting and partisan disagreement ultimately doomed it. When that legislation failed, states began moving ahead on their own.
Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware have legalized some kind of online gambling, and legislatures in other states are weighing the issue.
Morgan Stanley predicts that by 2020, online gambling in the U.S. will produce the same amount of revenue as Las Vegas and Atlantic City markets combined: $9.3 billion.

The National Conference of Personal Managers will appeal the dismissal of its legal challenge to California's Talent Agencies Act. Ncopm’s suit against the state of California, which named Gov. Jerry Brown and Labor Commissioner Julie Su and Attorney General Kamala Harris as defendants, was dismissed March 6. Judge Dean Pregerson of the Central District of California ruled that Ncopm's evidence amounted to something akin to “naked assertions” and that there was not evidence "sufficient to state a claim upon which relief can be granted." "Obviously, we disagree with the judge's conclusions. For a ruling on a motion to dismiss, the court's opinion is an abuse of judicial discretion," Clinton Ford Billups Jr., Ncopm’s national president, said in a statement. "Appropriately, Ncopm has instructed our legal counsel to proceed with an appeal. Ncopm will pursue this appeal not only on the basis of judicial error, but also because the Taa...

If you are a fan of Syfy's Battlestar Galactica, you probably know that some scenes of the series were filmed in and around the extensive forests of western British Columbia. What you may not realise, however, is that two of the show's stars - Tricia Helfer (Number Six) and Tahmoh Penikett ('Helo') - have lent their talents to a new indie docu-drama that is intended to raise awareness of issues associated with cutting down some of these forests.
The film, called The Green Chain, was written, directed and co-produced by Vancouver-born Mark Leiren-Young. His previous credits include scripts for episodes of the series The Collector, Blood Ties and Psi Factor. He has also written a book, 'Never Shoot a Stampede Queen', articles for 'Time Magazine', 'Maclean's' and 'The Utne Reader', and stage plays.
True to his roots, Leiren-Young focuses The Green Chain on the debate in British Columbia, but it...
